i loved this place because it was far far far away from town. it takes about 15-20mins to get to town (depending on who drives). there's free shuttle to town so transport hadn't been an issue for us.
there are farms nearby, with a chicken farm about 10mins walk away. these are things you stumble upon when you go for morning strolls everyday.
the place doesn't come with a/c but it is cold at night, so it wasn't of concern to me. but the bathroom was semi exposed so chilly winds come in when i was bathing at night. cold! there's water heater, thankfully.
every single piece of furniture and every house had been painstakingly built by the owner over the past 13 years. so the place had a homey feel. had fun star gazing in the lawn every night.
only issue was they don't serve breakfast as part of the deal. but drinking water supply is free and you can just keep refilling your water bottles to heart content.
please don't stay at this place if you do not like nature (that includes both being out there in the open and appreciating fauna) and you need to visit a pub every single night. because 1- there's bound to be insects and animals in/around your wooden huts, 2- it is far from the pub street and everyone staying there pretty much sleeps by 1030hrs.

My boyfriend and I chose to stay at this place after reading the tripadvisor reviews and visiting its website. It looked like the perfect place for us. We were attracted to its location (located outside the city center) and that it is a family run establishment. When we travel, we much prefer the experience rather than the frills, and as low maintenance travelers, took no notice of the trip advisor reviews remarking that the bungalows were "basic" etc. Instead, we were looking forward to the scenic views accompanied by a personal touch. While we got the former, the latter was lacking and affected the overall experience of our stay.

First the positives:
-The place is incredibly scenic, and the bungalows have amazing views of the hillside. For those who are looking for something remote within a city, calm and peaceful, a get-a-way of sorts, this place is it.
-The kids are really sweet, friendly and we had some great chats with them while we spent our time there.
-The bungalows are nice and the ambiance lovely. They were clean, the bathrooms had flush toilets, and the decor itself we found to be quite welcoming and quaint.
-The husband was great, incredibly friendly and we wish we could have chatted with him longer, but we only happened to meet him the night before we left.

Negatives:
-On Khoun & Khone’s website it presents itself as a “resort” of sorts; the place is a retreat with a personal touch, away from the cookie cutter city center guesthouses. When we arrived we didn’t receive a map of the area, or any information about the surrounding landscape at all. This would have been very helpful and is common for most accommodations, especially lodges removed from the city to orient its guests.
-During our pick up and drop offs to the city center, which presented a perfect opportunity for the wife to chat with us and tell us about herself and Luang Prabang, the drives were silent. Again, personal touch…It also would have been nice to find a bottled water or two upon our arrival in our bungalow, which is quite standard for mid-range accommodations throughout Luang Prabang. Considering that the place is far removed from the city center, where shops abound, this makes this little touch even more desired and welcoming--especially upon arrival and after a day of traveling.
-The website advertises itself as being only about “10 minutes away from the old city.” In the jeep it is more like 20-25 minutes away and in the van, 15-20 minutes. I only remark on this because this difference would have affected our decision to say here. It was not easy for us to plan our days and especially evenings after realizing the amount of time that would be spent traveling to and from the place, factoring in mid-day rests at the lodging etc. Also not mentioned on the website is that the pick-up from the city center is available until 9pm only. This meant we had to get a cab back to the lodging at 10pm, which is not unusually late for a night out in Luang Prabang.
-When we asked about arranging our bus tickets for our travels, we received little help and were incredibly surprised. Again, this personal touch would have made the difference for us, and is actually quite standard for guesthouses, but we found the experience here to be off-putting and affected the overall tone of our stay.

Stayed in the center of Luang Prabang, but as we wanted to escape the noise but still be close enough from all the sights, we ended up here. What a perfect escape! A wonderful family who treats you like one of them. Khoun is a 100% enthusiastic and Khone is also so nice and friendly. They prepare also terrific meals so we ended up eating most of the time there. Very good value for money. The bungalows are basic, but that's just part of the charm. You have everything you need: a good bed, a lot of space, hot shower, and your private outside sitting area. The kids had a wonderful time playing in the garden while we throughly enjoyed the peace. Must I say we are looking forward to get back here again, and we can recommend everybody to have a few nights here! Oh, and don't worry about the distance to town. Just ask them and they'll bring you and pick you back up in there vintage Landrover. Just left, and I miss it already!

I'm really glad I decided to stay here. It was my favorite lodging during my month of traveling in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The bungalows are very basic and when I was there mine lacked hot water but the bed was comfortable and warm during surprisingly cool nights. But the environment was beautiful and I went to sleep each night with the sounds of the jungle. Meals prepared were amazing and some of the best I had during my stay in Laos. This was wonderful retreat after traveling in the congested cities of SE Asia.

We first stayed with Khoun and Khone in November 2011, and it was a wonderful introduction to Laos. It is not a guesthouse, but a five bungalow eco-lodge set in Khoun's market garden, and only 10 minutes in the vintage Jeep to downtown (rides cheerfully included in price). Khone's meals are wonderful, and often shared with the family. The bungalows are very private, large and clean, and made with traditional materials.

Khoun and Khone are both personable, speak good English, and are a wealth of information and stories. And they are generous: we interrupted our first stay with a trip to the north of Laos, and I offered to pay to hold the room while we were gone. They kept the room for us until we returned without charging for the time it was empty.

I cannot imagine a better way to experience Luang Prabang from a country setting.
