Owner description: Opened in 2007, TAEC is a museum with permanent and temporary exhibitions about the diverse ethnic groups of Laos. Permanent Exhibitions highlight the Akha, Kmhmu, Tai Lue, and Hmong ethnic minorities. On display now is a special exhibition entitled, "Seeds of Culture: From Living Plants to Handicrafts". This exhibit features the Job's tears (Coix) plant, indigenous to mainland Southeast Asia, to demonstrate the important relationship between humans and nature. On display are unusual artefacts, including a Chin headdress that uses porcupine quills, and magnificent necklaces from 14 different countries in Africa, Asia, and South America. Visitors are treated to a visually stunning display allowing them to explore the meaningful role of the environment in the daily lives of rural ethnic communities. The adjacent TAEC Museum Shop features fair trade handicrafts from 12 provinces of Laos supporting over 600 ethnic artisans from all over Laos. TAEC also boasts an extensive family activity centre, ethnobotanical garden, and patio cafe with cold refreshments making the museum a perfect destination for children and adults.

“You won't miss this ”
Reviewed 10 August 2014 via mobile

I went here as I had some extra time to kill. For 25,000 kip, the exhibition is indeed very small. My friend and I finished the museum in about 45min. If you do not have the time or on a budget, you can skip this.

“Are you an Ethnolog?”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

If you are very, very much interested in Ethnology or want to contribute to the Ethnology Cente ( the entrance fee of 20'000 Kip is quite high for what you get to see) than go ahead and visit the place.

TAECLAOS, Manager at Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre, responded to this review, 4 August 2014
Thank you for visiting TAEC. Unlike many museums in Europe, we do not receive government funding to keep the museum open. The entry fee of 25,000 kip, about 3 US dollars, supports operational costs of maintaining our non-profit museum. We appreciate your review.

“excellent descriptions of the various ethnic groups in Laos”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

The entree fee was a little steep, but I thought that the map showing where the various ethnic groups live and showing examples of the very different tribal textiles and weavings was informative and well done researched. It is a little tricky to find but worth the short climb up the hill and some stairs. However once you get there, I think they could use a few more fans for their over-heated patrons.
