The Belle Rive Boutique Hotel

A great little hotel, conveniently situated (for us) a mere 5 minutes walk from the Luangsay cruise disembarkation point. After two days’ cruising from Huay Xai and a degree of slowly encroaching cabin fever, the Belle Rive came as a haven in which to unwind. Luang Prabang is one of the most magically laid back places in the world and the Belle Rive follows that theme.

Welcoming staff (whose smiles and eagerness to please say more than their proficiency in English), an amazing open air, riverside restaurant and a feeling of understated luxury sums up this hotel.

We stayed in a ground floor mango room, which for two people (not a couple) proved to require some degree of contortionism. Nevertheless, we did not spend much time in your room – the terrace, both immediately outside the room, or beside the river was where we spent a few hours at the beginning and end of each day.

The Thai owner, his wife and the entire staff go out of their way to help. We wanted to do the Living Land Rice Farm and Kuang Si falls in one day, and to minimize the cost, the owner advised us to use the farm’s included transfer and arranged a private taxi ready to take us on to the falls – significantly cheaper that the USD70 agencies in town had quoted us. Another perk was the complimentary sunset cruise with unlimited wine… as far as I could tell these are not necessarily regular – more right place, right time, but highly appreciated.

I wish we could have stayed longer than three nights.

I stayed here with my parents for 5 nights in early January. This beautiful little hotel sits in the heart of the old town, along the Mekong River. The hotel is made out of 3 different buildings, i stayed in the Frangipani suite, my parents in the Mango suite.
The Frangipani suite has a little hallway and it's own front door (that get's photographed by quite a few passing tourists). Both rooms are very clean and spacious with comfortable beds and have a lovely combination of old decorative colonial style and modern elements. Little added touches were the homemade cookies and fresh fruits every day.
The hotel also lends out bicycles to hotel guests, bikes are a great way to travel around the city! In the evenings you can also head out onto the Mekong river for a beautiful sunset on the water with the hotel's very own cruise boat.
There are two terraces directly overlooking the Mekong which is lovely for having breakfast. The local food from the hotel restaurant was one of the best in town, especially recommended for those who like their food a little more spicy (i had two of the local favourites Or Lam and Laab Gai with Sticky Rice on a few evenings, both of which were absolutely delicious).
The staff was also very helpful. Not everyone spoke good english but they all tried very hard to be professional.
Overall we would definitely recommend this hotel and will be back here on our next visit!

The Belle Rive is a charming hotel. It's both centrally located and yet, on a quiet stretch of the river. Our room had a cozy balcony with a view of the river, which was a pleasant reading spot. The breakfast on the riverside terrace is a great way to start the day. Over all the service at the hotel was excellent. However, true to our experience everywhere in Laos, things can move a bit slow. Expect your breakfast to be delivered at a leisurely pace. A great perk at the hotel is are the bikes that are available. I highly recommend exploring Luang Prabang this way. Overall a wonderful stay. We were sad to leave.

Arriving from busy Bangkok The Belle Rive was just absolutely amazing. We got an amazing duplex room with river view and balcony. The staff is very helpful and friendly and is great for food or other recommendations. The breakfast is served at the riverside and is very varied and fresh. For us the the hotel library was a big plus. Tons of books about the history of the country and the region can be used free of charge.
I totally recommend it.

During our stay in Laos, we came back several times to Luang Prabang to stay at this wonderful and unique hotel. One of the most beautiful places we have been to, located just in the historical part of the town with a really outstanding view and an excellent service. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Everything was just perfect and the atmosphere really great. The rooms are all very nice and spacious and of course, clean. The food is fantastic, we also tried other restaurants in town, but this is really one of the best choices. The kitchen serves excellent Lao and Thai food. We hope to be back at the Belle Rive sooner rather than later!

This hotel is just beautiful, a place, where days can become weeks, and weeks become months. There is high speed internet in the luxuriously furnished room, but no tv which I first found rather unusual, but a letter on the desk with the usual informations for guests explains it: Luang Prabang is a quiet place, and most people come to enjoy the peace, and that is, why there is no tv in the room, unless you ask for it.
They were right, I did not ask for the tv being installed, you can sit outside in fornt of your room (or enjoy a glass of wine in the restaurant belonging to the hotel), look out over the Mekong river and enjoy the quiet atmosphere.
Of course also in Luang Prabang you can't avoid those idiots who are constantly chatting in their mobile phones in such a volume, that everybody around (wanting it or not) gets a deep insight into their private matters, and this is what the hotel could do to to keep the atmosphere: To install a jammer in the hotel's restaurant.
The personnel (mostly young people) was a little bit shy (the Laotians are a very nice people, but still not too much used to us foreigners), but extremely friendly, I felt very warmly welcomed and would go there again.

To be honest, the hotel is tasteful and classy, with friendly staff. However, it suffers from one serious issue that ruined our stay: It is swarming with thousands of tiny ants that were everywhere: On the floor of our room and bathroom, coming in and out of doorframes, on the wooden furniture, under tea cups left on the table, everywhere! The worst is that you can see them all over the outdoor restaurant tables as well. I even noticed that there were tiny ants on the bread and toast of my breakfast as soon as the waiter placed the plate in front of me, so they obviously came straight from the kitchen. At first, I did not pay much attention to this, as I thought that it is to be expected in a tropical town like Luand Prabang. However, both me and my mother got VERY ILL with diarrhoea and vomiting that would not stop, and we had to see a doctor who recommended immediate treatment with antibiotics. When we told the doctor about the ants, he said that this could well have been the cause of our illness, especially since there are open -and smelly - sewers around the hotel. We ate NOWHERE ELSE in Luang Prabang during our entire stay, and we always drank bottled water without ice, so it is absolutely certain that we got ill while eating at the Belle Rive. On top of that, we found a huge live cockroach in our room and we had to ask the staff to spray. The hotel obviously needs to be thoroughly disinfected for ants and other pests and to take extra care about the hygiene in the kitchen. Being served food with live ants in it and staying in an insect infested room is totally unacceptable for any hotel, and more so for a property that calls itself a first class "boutique" hotel.
