“Good value guesthouse”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 October 2013

Stayed with a group of 14 at the Villa Somphong whilst in LPB in October and we were really happy with the experience. Good guesthouse accommodation for larger groups can be hard to find but this place was a real winner. Rooms were clean, comfortable and of a reasonable size with 6 of them offering a balcony and views over the river. Air-conditioning worked very well although the shower pressure was a little variable - not a big problem though. The remaining rooms offer various views but no balcony. A real bonus with the guesthouse was the courtyard overlooking the river which was also the breakfast area. It is a great communal place with our group able to catch up and chat about the days proceedings. Breakfast itself comprised eggs (fried, scrambled, omlet) or pancakes with banana, plus tropical fruit, baguette, butter, jam, juice and tea/coffee. Tea and coffee was also available during the day from reception for a small price. Those seeking cooler refreshment could purchase drinks from a small shop beneath the annex building - very convenient! The place was very quiet - no surprise given it's proximity to the tip of the peninsula. However, an unusually joyful rooster combined with a special 4am drum solo from the nearby temple managed to interrupt sleep only once or twice. Noi was a great host - offering help with everything including money exchange and laundry and also sharing a traditional Lao breakfast on our final morning. We would definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: As everyone else says, try to get a room with a balcony overlooking the river! Number 106 is best as...

I stayed at Villa Somphong in September.

I arrived at the Villa earlier than the check-in timing but the hotel staff acceded to my request to check in early. I was really happy as this allowed me to explore the nearby attractions which was recommended by the Hotel Staff. They even gave me a map of the area and circled the places I should visit whilst in Luang Prabang.

The "villa" itself is a two storey building that looks like it was built in the 70s but they did a great job with the renovation. My room was located on the second floor. I had booked a Deluxe Double River View With Balcony. So basically, the balcony is right outside the room, which was more like a corridor. This corridor linked to the rest of the room on the 2nd floor. I had no qualms about it, just that I had expected my own balcony as I like to sit down and do some reading/work by myself.

When I got into the room, the first thing I saw was a huge bed and I was indeed happy. The room came with an ensuite toilet, wall-mounted TV, a mini fridge, a cupboard and a dresser. The toilet, however, was not to my liking as it looks old and didn't suit the design of the rest of the room.

During my stay at Villa Somphong, the hotel staff were really accomodating and friendly. They assisted me a lot and we definitely had a lot of good conversations about the area in Luang Prabang. What I should do here, where I should go to eat good French Food, where to go for a good massage. They even suggested me to take a trip to the Kuang Si falls which was worth it! The villa is a 10 mins walk away from the night market which they have everyday.

I enjoyed my stay in Villa Somphong and I would recommend this place to couples looking for a quiet place away from the noise of the street market and nightlife.

Room Tip: Pick the second floor rooms, much more quieter as you don't have to hear people walking outside...

We stayed at Villa Somphong in August for 3 nights and I must say that the hotel is amazing. Noi was just a immense host, she could arrange anything from tours, flights to currency exchange. The rooms were great, clean and large beds. Nice shower, with good AC and free wifi. Breakfast was lovely, had fruit with a baguette normally, very nice I must say. Location was easy access to everywhere, night market mount phousi and lot of temples, over looking Nam Khan river for breakfast and a short walk to see the sun set on the Mekong. Well recommended. Super place

Room Tip: Had a lovely double room on ground floor at front.

The staff are very friendly and Noi does all she can to help answer questions, gives you a map and explains points of interest.
The rooms though small are very clean, flat screen tv, fridge etc,
Laundry service price 100, 000kip, same as in street
Order a motor bike and it will be brought to the hotel and picked up from there too, and only 10, 000kip more than walking up the street and finding one, and they will keep it safe at night.
Woukd definately stay here again.
Breakfast lovely location sitting next to river

Room Tip: Get room on 1st floor with balcony overlooking river

We stayed here for four nights, and loved every minute of it. It is about a ten minute walk from the "downtown" area, but is located on the riverside. The owner is very friendly, speaks good
English, and has lots of tips and recommendations of things to do, places to go, and how to beat the crowds The breakfast was really good, too. We had banana pancakes and fresh fruit every morning. The rooms were clean and bright, and we got the rooms with a patio, so had a little table and chairs outside of the room to sit and play card games or just hang out.

After a week at the Villa Somphong, I can recommend the hotel very highly. My room was spacious and very clean. Same for the bathroom. The outdoor breakfast by the river was one of the highlights of the stay. The location is convenient, just a short walk to the center of town and to the night market, and also even closer to a wonderful French bakery. Management is very friendly and helpful. A great place for a visit to a marvelous city.
