“Not worthy of a 5 star rating”
Reviewed 20 June 2014

The stay started off badly when the organised airport shuttle didn't turn up until we made several phone calls, (we had confirmation paper work including emails from the hotel). We were told they had no booking for us despite the confirmation paper work we put in front of them! This issue was clarified eventually, when they found their paperwork! We were very dissapointed with this hotel. The rooms were not very clean, with large amounts of dust under the chairs, desk and bed and behind the bathroom door, it was very noticable. The linen did not smell very fresh and had marks over it with pillow covers torn and the towels, although changed every day, had stains and holes. There was toothpaste on the wash basins in the bathroom which was still there in the same place even after the room had been cleaned, and was still there when we left! The taps in the shower were not cleaned the entire time we stayed nor were the wash basins and taps. The breakfast was very limited until a group of Americans checked in and then it improved! There were a couple of very helpful staff but overall we were not impressed. Mostly the staff are very untrained, or if they are trained, are not doing what they have been 'trained' to do! A male member of staff unzipped his trousers to tuck in his shirt, in full view of guests at the front entrance. Another male staff member appeared to be taking photos on his mobile phone of guests eating, and other staff members were playing on their mobile phones in front of guests. The hotel is approximately 4 klms from the centre of town, which was not an issue as we were aware of this, but the times of their shuttle service could be improved! The buildings are in need of some care and attention as are the gardens. The only item which in our opinion deserved the 5 star rating was the pool and spa! It was very clean and very well maintained. The views of the mountains surrounding the area were excellent. We will NOT stay here again and unfortunately will NOT recommend it to anyone.

Dear Fudge2012oz,

At the outset, my apologies for not replying back in a timely manner.

Let me start out by thanking you for having taken the time to share your experience with us. It is in this way that we can improve our services to our guests.

As Luang Prabang is on its way to further development, local manpower is constantly in need of service training. We do understand your remarks and assure you that all new service staff undergo training.Likewise, our HR has imposed a stronger sanction on cellphone use to ensure that all staff focus on work.

On room concerns, our Housekeeping has been tasked to strictly double-check the rooms to increase the comfort level in any way possible for our guests to make sure they have a pleasant stay overall.

In sum, we have taken your comments seriously and we will definitely address those service opportunities.

One last note, your appreciation of our pool, the cleanliness and its maintenance, means a great deal to us.

Once again, thank you for your feedback and constructive criticism.

I sincerely hope to welcome you back at Le Palais Juliana.

Best regards,

Oscar Tality

i spent 3 days 2 nights at the hotel. all staff are very friendly and helpful. the hotel room is spacious and hotel area is very greenery with nice surrounding. the hotel area is very large with needed facility. you can just spend time in the hotel all day. free wifi is available also! breakfast offerered; however, due to small number of the guests during my stay, variety of breakfast served was limited. the hotel provides free shuttle bus between the city as per schedule. but if you go to the downtown any time you wish, a taxi is needed and it costs 50,000 Laotian Kips for one way.

I have never stayed at such a beautiful location, the pool and the rooms were impeccable.
I was on a tour and was almost tempted to miss feeding the monks to hang out by the pool.

The dinner and breakfast were excellent.

I would go to Laos again just to stay here!!

Though a little dry, the old small world charm of this quaint place is soothing. Breakfast was basic but the villas & rooms interesting. We were a group of about 28 women and we were well taken care of. Our ground floor room has direct access to the pool that had a ruin for a backdrop. My daughter found that very engaging.

Room Tip: pool side rooms or the lakeside villa

We stayed at Palais Juliana when in Luang Prabang. My wife had been there before and liked the place. We were picked up at the airport and was given a beautiful family room with a view to a small lake with the mountains in the far horizon. A good place for a sundowner. Our room was impeccable. Well designed, clean and comfortable. The staff was very attentive with a natural friendliness. Though this was high season, we had the impression that the staff in the restaurant were not used to guests outside breakfast. Probably because people eat in town, which frankly is a shame as we had some of our best meals in Luang Prabang here.

The pool is large, but very cold for Asia. The temperature drops to 14-15 degrees celcius in the evening and the sun is too bleak during the day to heat all that water. Very fresh. On the other side the heated spa next to the pool is a brilliant place to watch the sun go down - or the stars in the clear sky - preferably with a drink in your hand.

Breakfast is good with a fine selection of both Laotian and western fare.

What you should know, is that this hotel is a fair distance from the town centre (4-5 kilometers). There is nothing to do in the neighborhood and a tuk-tuk ride downtown takes 15 min (50.000 kip). What you should also know is that the hotel in places could do with a bit of paint, a nail or a new board. In my view this is offset by the fantastic landscape, the friendliness of staff and the quiet.

Heartily recommended!

Room Tip: Go for the family rooms on the eastern side. Room 17 and 18 are good.

I stayed here during my Indochina travel in 2011 and the hotel is beautiful, the rooms are clean and big. The staffs are very helpful and the manager at reception provided us complimentary drive to airport which was very nice of him.

This was the last leg of our Asian tour. The hotel was a wise choice, the staff very friendly and helpful. The two wings have two floors, we chose the upper floor due to better view . The rooms below have direct access to the pool though. The rooms are furnished at par with international standards with comfortable beds. Breakfast was impressive with a wide array of items to choose from.. We simply loved the hotel!
