“French colonial”
Reviewed 14 February 2013

An all-suites facility, built in French colonial style, with lovely gardens. Our room had a king poster bed with mosquito netting, a desk and chair, a sofa, coffee table and two side stools, night stands, etc. Plenty of room for all the luggage, huge bath, beautiful grill work and more. The key is the old-fashioned kind … the type that fits into a key-hole … and it has a very heavy tri-headed elephant as a key fob.

It was an absolute pleasure to stay at the Luang Say Residence. This is a lovely property a short tuk-tuk or shuttle ride (provided free by the hotel in the evening, and at other times if the driver is available) from the center of town. Rooms are very spacious and well appointed, with elegant, comfortable seating, private verandas, and nice lighting options. Guest rooms are housed in several freestanding buildings scattered around the property. The grounds are nicely landscaped with ponds, stands of bamboo and a variety of other plants, making for an interesting walk from the guest rooms to the main building housing the restaurant, bar, library and lobby. Breakfast in the dining room or the veranda is extremely pleasant. The selection and presentation of breads and fresh fruits was flawless, and the western and Asian breakfast entrees I tried were delicious and well-executed. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to have any other meals at the hotel; based on the quality of the breakfast I assume they would be similarly excellent. Hotel staff were uniformly gracious and helpful. I only regret not being able to stay longer.

We stayed for several days at the hotel. Having travelled to many countries around the world during the past twenty five years staying at many luxury hotels, this property is undoubtly up there with the very best. Room 604 outstanding in every way, the size, the view and the atmosphere, fit for a king and queen, which is exactly how we felt.

The colonial buildings and the beautiful well kept gardens, together with the serene swimming pool are just heavenly.

We have to congratulate Mr Rodolphe Gay on his supurb , happy attentive staff, and his very well run restaurant. And the food was good too - from a couple of well travelled old Brits !!

Room Tip: 604 would definitely return

My mother and I kicked off a 16 day trip in SE Asia in January 2013 with a two night stay at the Luang Say Residence in Luang Prabang and even after three additional countries and numerous other excellent hotels, the Luang Say Residence remained a standout experience. From the prompt and helpful airport pickup, to the gorgeous and relaxing facilities and the attentive staff, our stay was near-flawless. The rooms are extremely spacious and the restaurant is top notch -- try the chef's delicious homemade pasta for a real treat. We booked a package that included one dinner for two and a 90 minute massage for two at a nearby spa, both of which were fantastic. The hotel is located a bit away from the main street but it is an easy tuk tuk or bicycle ride and the hotel staff were very helpful in booking transportation and activities during our stay. Our only regret is that we were not able to stay longer!

I just spent three nights at this charming property and loved it. The Luang Say Residence is located an easy five minutes drive from the town (shuttle provided free of charge by the hotel). The hotel is stylish with a relaxed colonial flavor: a main building houses the reception, restaurant and bar (where they light a fire on chilly evenings) while the suites are situated in separate houses or pavilions, dotted in and amongst the quiet and green tropical gardens. My suite overlooked a little vegetable patch and I enjoyed sitting on my balcony each morning and watching the gardeners come and go to tend it. (Vegetables from the garden are organic and served in the restaurant). The pool is restful and the bar is a great place to relax and enjoy a drink after a busy day of sightseeing around the town.

The Luang Say has a sense of style and place that is perfect for Luang Prabang. Each pavilion is named after a different French explorer. I should not forget to mention the staff who are charming and attentive and the general manager, a young and enthusiastic Frenchman who was always nearby to assist, chat with guests and who was a very good host.

As for the rooms, they are spacious and quiet. The beds and linens were very comfortable and the bath amenities of high quality. The thoughtful turn down touches each evening were also appreciated.

I only ate at the restaurant once but thoroughly enjoyed the Lao dishes I tried. A very nice place to dine on the verandah overlooking the garden!

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of a visit to Luang Prabang. It is not 'cheap' but it is great value and truly affordable when compared to other properties we also looked at when considering our stay such as the Orient Express Phu Vao (more than double the price!) and the Amantaka (triple the price when I checked). The Luang Say Residence is a real home away from home in Luang Prabang. Low key, laid back luxury. I would definitely stay again if I have the chance!

If you go there, you really have a wonderful time. Nice and helpful staff, very charming and friendly manager, excellent food, useful shuttle to town. A small pool, not very quiet behause of some street music in the afternoon - but who cares? We recommand not the Explorator Suites in the main building, because you hear everything in the morning, when the house starts to live - but when, try to get 601. Otherwise take Pioneer Suites, in the wonderful pieceful garden with rabbit Roger and his wife Ginger.

Room Tip: Pioneer Suites are more quiet than Explorator Suites.
