“Basic and inexpensive guesthouse near Utopia”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

Great room, ac was okay. It is very near Utopia Bar & Restaurant. I could hear the music from the bar when I was at the guesthouse's veranda but absolutely not in my room. The location is about 10 mins walk to the center.

We arrived in luang in a down pour of rain and went straight to this guesthouse but they were full. We went to the guesthouse across the alley and it wad absolutely terrible so next day we checked into vilayvanh.

We were given room 204... the bed bug room.

We inspected the room and matress and I am pleased to announce it is free of bed bugs! But the evidence of a cleaning job is everywhere. There is dead grass all over the matress with green grass scrub marks. It smells damp like they throw the matress on the grass and Hose it down.... before the first night I asked to change rooms but a free room wasn't available until the next day. We were told four times a double room is available on top floor.

Next morning we packed our bags, put them into the hallway, and confirmed a free room.

We went back a few hours later to learn we were (either) lied to (or they gave our room away). But they fixed our air con! (Which was never a topic of conversation and worked anyway??) .

We left. The wifi is painfully slow. Its location and proximity to nice areas does not warrant a good rating.

I stayed for 2 weeks and the owner (Duk) was extremely helpful and happy to help in any situation. It's located down a side street, very close to Utopia, which is a great place to chill out, eat and drink. It's clean, but for 100,000 Kip a night (£8/$13) for a room with AC you can't expect the space and newness you would get if you paid $30 a night.

In short, if you're on a tight budget it's a great place to stay.

This has to be one of our favorite places that we stayed during more than nine months of traveling. The hosts were super friendly and would bend over backwards to help. The location is ideal, close to everything, but tucked away down a quiet street. The rooms were spacious, clean, and had A/C (a must in these hot months). And the house has a wonderful area upfront for lounging and drinking tea or coffee. All this for only 100,000 kip per night! Alas, if it were not for discovering ourselves covered in bed bugs during the middle of the night, I would have given this establishment five stars.

Only room 204 appears to have the bed bugs. The owners decided to remove and attempt to clean the mattress, however, the infestation was so severe (it had clearly been in existence for a few months) that I sincerely doubt that the use of insecticides will solve the problem. Plus, who wants to sleep on a mattress that's been bathed in insecticide?

Needless to say, do stay at this amazing house, but do not stay in room 204. We moved to another room and had no issues during our remaining days. If you do get room 204, check the mattress for bed bugs, perhaps by the time you read this the owners will have purchased a new mattress and all this fuss would be for not.

Room Tip: room 204 has bed bugs

We stayed at Vilay Vang Guest House for 4 nights in December, 2012. The guesthouse is in a quiet area not too far from the main part of Luang Prabang. To walk to the main part of town, you need to go around a hill, but either way around is quick and scenic. The advantage to VV's location is it is down a small lane off of the main road, so there is no road noise (just a few roosters). Duk is a very kind and conscientious host. There was a mix-up with our reservation, but he went above and beyond to sort it all out in a very honorable manner. In addition to being clean and quiet, VV is very reasonably priced (approximately 15 USD a room during high season). VV is more a utilitarian guesthouse than a quaint one, but we were quite happy with it.

Stayed here for 3 nights, found it cheap (120,000 for a 3 person room) great location as its only 5 minutes from the night markets, 2 minutes from the main pubs and restarunts and literally round the corner from utopia. the staff are very friendly and laid back, never once asked us to pay for the room. i had to go and find him when we was leaving to pay. hot showers and clean bathroom, room was nice with clean bedding and a t.v with all channels working. free tea, coffee and bananas anytime you wanted. no faults great value for money!

Duk the proprietor is kind and welcoming. He will go out of his way to meet your needs. Vilayvanh is definitely inexpensive- we paid US$15 a night during high season.

Rooms on the first floor, which begin with the #2, are small, adequate for two people. Here's what you can expect: 2 twin beds, a desk and stool next to a small wardrobe. BYO hangers. Small but serviceable TV set. Two bottles of water, two towels, a roll of TP. The comforters were slightly stained but sheets were clean. A/C worked well, as did the fan. Wifi in the lobby area only. Screens on the windows, which is a plus. No bugs or creepy crawlies. Best of all, with the A/C or fan on, it was blessedly quiet--note that the guesthouse is tucked back a ways from the street.

Location was excellent. Easy walking to pretty much everything.

Duk provides a big water cooler in the lobby with yummy Lao coffee.

Bottom line- you get what you pay for here, and there are far worse deals in LP. Just keep yourself focused on the basics and no more, knowing that you're getting a decent room for $15. Realize that if this were a guesthouse in Canada or the States, it would rate far lower- but you have to take into consideration where you are. For LP, it's a decent choice.

Room Tip: Rooms beginning with a 1 are below ground. They do not have A/C and while spacious, are musty and da...
