“Sustainable Laos”

Ma Te Sai: "Where's it from?"

Central to the idea of this shop is sustainability - handcrafted, home made, repurposed and supporting villagers.

Wonderful introduction by staff of the variety of social, sustainable enterprises that keep livelihoods and villages afloat in Laos.

At Ma Te Sai, they sell items as local and organic as handcrafted, sustainably sourced and hand loomed silk scarves, local cotton products, bracelets made from repurposed UXO, herbal whiskey...and coasters made from repurposed newsprint.

Hey now, that's newsworthy!

“Great gifts, good selection”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 October 2012

This is a great shop with a selection of gifts some smaller and therefore less expensive. They are all of a good quality. The other wonderful thing is that the money does get back to support the many villages where the beautifully crafted items come from.

“Unusual shopping and boating in Luan Prabang”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 February 2012

Last January in Luan Prabang, my husband and I met a very nice and brilliant Australian young woman, Emi Weir. She is the owner of Ma Te Sai(which in Lao means where is it from..) a nice shop in Main street near the Royal Palace where you can find beautiful, good quality , authentic (and sustainable) lao products, all hand made by Lao artisan : from herbal teas to household crafts, from soaps and shampoos to children toys... if you want to find original gifts to bring home this is the right place.
But Emi is not only the creative mind of Ma Te Sai: she owns a beautiful Lao boat too and she organizes "tailor made" and unusual boating along the Mekong river : the day spent on the Mekong river on Emi 's boat (not to mention the cool white wine sipped on board at sunset eating Lao organic peanuts...) is absolutely one of our Lao best memories !
There are plenty of beautiful places around Luan Prabang and the boat is the best way to vist them but Emi can offers you something definitely different from the local boat trips for tourists. By the way she has a new web site www.bananaboatlaos.com and you can visit it before leaving.

“Great Local Crafts Well Presented”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 January 2012

It's really nice to understand where the items you are looking at come from. Even Better to see them well packaged, fairly Priced and presented in a diverse gallery. I really enjoyed seeing the crafts from many outlying comunities and thought the overall quality was great. Bravo Ma Te Sai!

“Great Fair Trade Shop in Luang Prabang”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 November 2011

If you want to make sure you are supporting traditional handicrafts and sustainable businesses when buying stuff in Luang Prabang, drop in to Ma Te Sai where you can read the stories behind all the great products they stock. The shop is in the main street and they are supporting minority groups to maintain their traditional skills (like dying and weaving) and some of the most disadvantaged people in Laos to develop new skills and/or sustainable businesses. You can also buy stuff online once you get home!
