“Do it with a lot of respect, please!”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

It's amazing sharing this way of beginning the day by donating to others. The Alms giving is now almost converted to a tourist attraction, it seemed to me like going to the zoo to feed animals, with tourist rice sellers along the way to the city center and market. I preferred to leave the honor of offering to those who fully understand the meaning and live it as a daily mission and i was sitting aside observing. We tourist have to contribute to keep this alive as a tradition and not as a tourist attraction.

“Worth the 5am wake up!”
Reviewed 16 August 2014 via mobile

The ceremony was really cool. We had to get up at 5am but it was so worth it. We bought bananas and apples the night before for the ceremony. Our hotel also offered to make is some sticky rice. Do not buy baskets of food from the ladies on the street, that seems to be the general advice from everyone including hotel staff. Def plan it into your trip. The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes. We were back in bed by 6:30.

“Worth the early get up!”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

A good reason to get up early!

Up at sunrise to watch a picturesque, single file parade of hundreds of monks collecting alms.

We decided to not participate, as so many tourists seem to "over participate" - ie. being in the way, being inappropriately dressed & using camera flashes...!

It was a spectacular event and well worth the early wake up call!

A beautiful memory from a lovely town...

“Alms Ceremony”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

I attended today. It was interesting and enjoyable. Steer clear of the women who race up to you with food, mat, sash etc. We were jumped on immediately (which I thought was very caring of the local people). At the cessation of the ceremony they demand kip, ie 50,000 kip for each of us for the food. Buy your own sticky rice, bananas etc the night before and avoid these ruthless women.
