We were met at the slow boat pier by a nice young man offering us what sounded like a great deal. Hot shower, free tea, coffee, water, bananas. Close to town & clean, all for 40,000 kip. I asked for wifi in the room he said for 40,000 kip you get wifi in the corridor outside the room. I said no thanks, so he said for 60,000 kip you can get a room with wifi inside. So i said ok. After paying 80,000 kip to transport 4 of us to the guesthouse ( standard procedure now ) we found the rooms damp & musty with no mosquito guards, no free water or bananas. The rooms were just clean enough to handle but with luke warm water. Worst of all there was no wifi in the room or outside in the corridor. I asked the teenage desk clerk what was going on & his reply was well just leave then but you will still pay 60,000 kip. So we paid an extra 20,000 kip for absolutely nothing & were refused a refund of it?!

Room Tip: Make sure you get upstairs & do not pay extra for in room wifi as it doesnt exist. You also wont see the same member of staff twice.

We were stupid enough to go here with a tuktuk directly from the famous slowboat. We stayed in 3 different rooms because of water damage and noise. The difference between the rooms can be quite big, so make sure you see them all first before you pick one. I have to be honest; the rooms itself are ok. The beds are Laos hard and I found a lost cockroach, but it was alright. The young guys who run the place are very busy with their computers and phones. They tried to let us pay twice for a night, but we could show the receipts, very important you save them! One guy is always trying to flirt/hook up with female solo travellers. If one girl leaves he will try with the next one. Not very proffesional. At night the guys indeed sleep on the floor in de lobby, which is kind of weird. They also really want to sell you bustickets! It was just not the place for me.

Worst hostel/hotel experience yet. First we got dropped off by the slow boat to luang prabang a few miles short of the actual town where you have no choice but to get a tuk tuk and thats where we met a guy from the hostel saying it was the cheapest there was. He showed us rooms for 40,000 per person per night but we asked for air con rooms and as it was quiet we got he to give us them for the same price. I met some girls who were checking out early because their room was infested with cockroaches although my room was ok.

Staff were terrible. Small slimy guy who seemed to be in charge hit on every girl he saw, and made them feel really uncomfortable, so much so that one girl told me she was leaving just because of him. Another guy who i asked where the swimming pool was ended up pointing roughly to a map and even though he obviously didn't know where it was he set us on a wild goose chase. In the end they tried to overcharge us 20,000 per night and became very threatening towards us where they said to a girl in our group "you want to go to hospital?", with a machete just behind him on the wall it felt pretty sketchy. We eventually made them realise we weren't gunna pay any more so the small guy just shouted, fine get your stuff and get out!
oh and the wifi didn't work.
Staff are crooks, far better places to stay

This is my second time in Mao Pha Shok. It is down a quiet alley not far from Utopia in Luang Prabang. I particularly like the location just next to the Nam Khan river and amongst local Laotian homes. The guesthouse is run by a number of young boys who speak good English and are helpful in trying to arrange onward transport and excursions. There is free coffee/tea, water and bananas but no restaurant. Wifi works in the central area but not in all the rooms. The rooms are large enough, clean and quiet (if the other guests are not too noisy!). I particularly like the downstairs room which shares the bathroom with the local boys but has a large outdoor space and is cheaper than the others with en suite bathroom (and/or AC and TV). I would stay here again.

Room Tip: As I said, I like the downstairs room more private, big and cheaper

We stayed four nights. The first night we came in from the slowboat. He quoted two of us 40,000k with a shared bathroom. We saw the room and it seemed clean. We then realized we shared the bathroom with the staff and the local boys. The next night we upgraded to an air conditioned room. It was nice with the occasional cockroach making its way up the shower drain. The bathroom did have some odd smells. We paid 80,000k for the air conditioned room with a private bath. On the last day we booked through them a mini bus to vang vieng as we couldn't find any cheaper options. We bargained with them and got it for 115,000k per person. After asking repeatedly what time it left and them telling us 8 am the worker with the nice teeth told us 7:30. The next morning he was at our door at 7:00 saying the bus was waiting. I think he was mad he didn't collect as high of a commission as he had wanted. They also tried to overcharge us for the room. We paid him, he paid the driver and off we went. We then Stopped at the bus station and he told everyone to get off and board their vans. We did as told and the driver came asking for tickets. We had nothing as we paid our original driver for the ticket. By this time he was gone and we were sitting in a mini van/bus with no ticket. The driver let us on anyway. Don't book anything through these guys. They will sell you anything and be very careful not to overpay for the room. We paid all at the end of our stay.
