“Perfect resort”

This resort was very good place to stay with relaxation for long-term traveler. This resort had good view, facility and nature friendship. The staff was very kind, facility was excellent and room was very comfortable. All was good, but location was bad to me because I stayed Luang Prabang for two days. This resort was apart from downtown about 15 minutes distance by shuttle, and this shuttle was 7 times a day. If you want to go downtown without shuttle, you must call taxi, or tuk-tuk with $6. It was certain that this resort was excellent, except location.

I stayed at the Santi Resort & Spa in mid December 2013 for 3 nights whilst visiting Luang Prabang on the seventh stage of my 21-day 'Grand Tour of Indochina' holiday operated by Voyages Jules Verne.

What you lose in being a bit out of town is gained by the resort being in a delightful 'countryside' setting with rooms that are generally acceptable in every 'normal' way.

---
I will slowly compile an extensive Trip Advisor 'Trip List' for my holiday to experience the different cultures and see the sights/landscape of Indochina (ie Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia); it will be entitled 'Grand Tour of Indochina : 19 Full-Day Organised Tour Dec 2013'. Please feel free to access it via my TA Profile (by clicking my TA 'name' below the photo on the left of this review). I hope it is of interest and use to you and that all of my individual reviews/photos/videos get posted properly; don't forget that videos aren't posted with the review like photos are, so it's best to locate them via my TA profile....
---

As my stay was part of an organised tour I obviously don't know the 'true' cost of this hotel; our stay was on a 'bed and breakfast' tariff and my room was a standard double.

This hotel is certainly more of the 'resort' type of establishment, as it is in rural area with rooms in grouped-buildings scattered around the expansive grounds located behind the main reception/dining block.

The only choice I had on booking the tour was for so-called 'upgraded accommodation, but (like all our 'standard' hotels) the Santi Resort & Spa proved perfectly adequate for my needs, although the in-room safe was broken (I had to use a sealed envelope stored at reception) and Wi-Fi access was a little sporadic. Fortunately, although we were out each day on organised tour excursions there was some spare time to enjoy the surroundings.....

I'll add some relevant video to this webpage and photos to this review.

The resort is located beside a sparsely-used, unpaved/small, access road some way from town, so external noise is not an issue wherever you are. The rear area has numerous buildings dotted around a heavily-planted/treed/watery area which at the perimeter offers unobstructed views over the open countryside.

There were few other residents there aside from my group of 5 so the lack of any obvious bar/restaurant provision might be due to that or, more likely, because we ventured into Luang Prabang each night to enjoy the significant eateries/attractions there.

The travel was simplified by there being a free hotel shuttle service which was sufficiently frequent to make moving to/fro and, more importantly, getting back fairly late at night quite easy to organise and achieve (grab a copy of the timetable if you aren't given one).

The breakfast buffet was fine (unlike a lot of other places we stayed at, it was noticeable that some of the menu changed each day here) and it could be taken outside in a very pleasant covered area.

So, overall I enjoyed my stay in the Santi Resort & Spa a lot as the location allowed us to unwind and readily travel into town to enjoy the varied delights of Luang Prabang. I am not sure what extra is on offer to cater for longer stays, but just the location and shuttle was enough for us for a 3-night stay.

This hotel was chosen for us by the Tour Operators, it was out of town but the hotel did run a free shuttle service which ended at their in town hotel, this was useful as it gave a pleasant place to wait and seating if required. The hotel is in a n umber of buildings of two storeys with open air links to the main building and Dining Room. The rooms are of a reasonable size for two people with balconies. While the stairs have walls each side there are no handrails as such so one has to hold the top of the wall, not ideal. The Dining Room has two levels, as Breakfast is self service it is probably more convenient to eat at the same level as the food is set out. All food is very good and the staff are very helpful and charming. The Reception is up a flight of steps but there are Ramps, however these are very steep and not ideal. There is a swimming pool which looks excellent and clean with adjacent Bar. Stay here if you like to be out of town and want somewhere very relaxing.

Room Tip: Choose a room at Ground Level unless you are happy to use stairs. Ask for a room close to the Dinin...

Stayed as a part of a tour and the calm, relaxing location was just what we needed after two hectic weeks. Out of town, it is amongst the hills and paddy fields. Rooms are located in a series of buildings and are spacious and comfy. We had an end building and it was quite a way from reception but then again, it was quiet. Pool was a nice are although water freezing in the beginning of February! Food was good, snacks were available such as spring rolls and sandwiches. Breakfast was ok but if you were late some of the items had not been refilled. Looks like there is an issue over doors in the restaurant reading another review. We had to sit outside one morning in the cold as no room was available inside. Going in and out with plates of food is not easy if the doors are shut. We also had an incident, did get nasty. A group inside objected ferociously to us going in and out and a guy put a knife through the handles to stop us opening the door. There were no handles outside which made it difficult to get in. It needs sorting... if people are eating outside then they should be able to come and go with plates of food easily. Certainly spoiled the morning.
Getting in to town is easy, compliamentary shuttle takes around 10 mins but you can always use a tuk tuk. I did not use the spa but one of our group did and really enjoyed use of gym and a nice massage.

The hotel is located in a semi-rural location on the edge of town - it takes about 10 minutes to get into town by tuktuk. The hotel rooms are in 5 or 6 buildings set in an arc around the property -there are also some stand alone bungalows available. The rooms are clean and functional rather than luxurious. There are mosquito nets above the beds and you will need to use them - mosquitoes can be an issue in Laos - make sure you take some DEET spray or roll on with you.

The breakfast buffet has an ok range of offerings - try the Laotian noodles.

Room Tip: The buildings have two floors - choose an upper floor room for a better view.

The location and ambience of the Santi Resort is wonderful; a series of two storey buildings set in beautifully landscaped grounds with hills as a backdrop. The rooms are comfortable, although the furnishings are a little tired looking. The mosquito net is a welcome addition to the beds. The towels provided in our bathroom had seen better days; they looked rather grubby which is not what you expect in a hotel that aspires to being the best in the district. Hot water could be a bit of an issue too, inasmuch as at some times of the day the hot tap wouldn’t provide even a sink full of warm water. The management appeared to know about the problem but clearly were unable or unwilling to fix it. We were patient; you turn the tap on and leave it. Eventually, if you are lucky, hot water arrives. However, it can only be a matter of time before they get a flooded room, caused by a guest turning on the tap for a bath and going out because the water didn’t arrive in time.

The restaurant was fine; certainly not haute cuisine, but decent buffet style Lao food which we enjoyed. (I think they have an a la carte menu too, but we were with a tour group and only got offered the buffet.) I think the Lao food that we had was better than the one evening when they served European style cuisine. The fish dishes were always good and one evening a dessert of sweet banana in coconut milk with sticky rice was produced. Most of our fellow travellers wouldn’t even try it, but it really was delicious. Definitely a go back for seconds job! Breakfasts offered a decent choice and there was a chef ready to cook eggs any way you wanted. However, one morning we were witnesses to a rather unpleasant incident between one of the English tourists and a guy who claimed to be the Restaurant Manager. (He didn’t look or behave much like a restaurant manager, but we were obliged to take his word for it.) It was early morning, and therefore quite chilly outside. The Brit had closed an outer door on several occasions, to prevent the cold draught and cigarette smoke coming in. For reasons not entirely obvious to me, the self styled restaurant manager was bawling at the Brit in a manner that you wouldn’t expect in a restaurant that was making claims about being a bit special. Had it happened in a backstreet bar in one of the less salubrious parts of town, I would have been getting up to leave before the fight broke out. This guy clearly needs some training in how to speak to his customers in a civilised manner, whatever he alleges that they have done. (The Brit took all of this in silence; he clearly was not expecting the response he got.) The alternative to extra training would be simply to fire him and find a new manager

Overall, we enjoyed our 4 nights at the Santi Resort and would certainly return. Without too much effort (nice clean looking towels in the bathroom would be a good start), I feel that with good management this hotel could be turned into a top of the range 5 star establishment.

Room Tip: Downstairs rooms probably get a more reliable hot water supply!

The room was comfortable with a balcony and a good view over the gardens. We struggled with the safe in the room which appeared to have a mind of its own but eventually opened and closed.
The food was good quality with a wide choice but the service erratic:-starters arriving after the main course. It should also be noted that this resort is a bit"out of town"which makes for some inconvenience although there is a shuttle bus.
