When I checked in, they required that I pay for 4 nights in advance. I have never experienced this. The rooms are nice enough and you can't beat the location but they didn't tell me that they would be doing construction during my stay. I wanted to leave but they acted like they didn't understand. After complaining, they promised that construction would only be from 10 until 4. Sure enough bang bang and power drilling bright and early in the morning. The alley next to the hotel has some loud scraping and something going on in the mornings as well. At $60 a night, even with a discount for off season to make it $45, this was really lame. The place has a lot of attitude as well once you seem disappointed. Look at my other reviews, I am easy to please. Avoid this place and get a cheaper and quieter place anywhere else near the night market. There are dozens of quaint and cheaper places.

Room Tip: I suppose you should not pay in advance. Also, there are two Ancient Hotels...the other one might be ok. Don't know.

This is our first visit to Laos. Our travel agent book the room for us. We stayed in Ancient Luang Prabang for 3 nights, we stayed in Cow room. the location accessible to everything, it is near the Phousi Hill, temples and next to the night market. The noise is bearable, anyway one will not go to bed very early specially if they are on holiday, night market close until 10 PM.
The room is not big, not small either, simple decoration and comfortable bed. Open shower room (not really a shower room), its a little bathtub where you stand and take a shower :).
The breakfast is ok. can't say anything much about the breakfast. The staffs are very friendly and very helpful.

This is a great location and facility for a first time traveller on a short visit to Luang Prabang. You are right next to the evening food market and beginning of the evening handicraft market, across from Phousi Hill, two block away from the former Royal Palace and now museum, a block away from the Centre for Ethnology, a block away from the morning market, and a short stroll away from the old city and the rivers. Inside, you will find tasteful and serene rooms, to leave behind all the tourist craziness. A decent breakfast can be included in the room rate, and the cafe is as good as any in town. Airport transfers are free. Staff is friendly. Couldn't ask for a better combination. But, if you were trying to fit in a bit of work along the way, you will find the lack of desk, limited electrical outlet, and mood lighting not very helpful. Nor lack of a night table for your readings and alarm clock. Wifi is free, but unstable and slow. Style, yes. Functionality, not so good. And on a longer stay, particularly during the hot months, you might want a place with a swimming pool.

We stayed in the location away from the night market, on the second floor, the "PIG" room and it was very nice, large and clean, on the main street. Noise was not a problem after 10 pm. You had to keep the shutters closed for privacy, but the lighting was adequate and the plumbing OK. The breakfast was North American and the coffee terrible ! Wifi unreliable for 2 days and then fine.

Room Tip: second floor facing the street.

Enchanting, perhaps, because Luang Prabang is so magical. This hotel has two locations, one next to The NIght Market and other several blocks away in a quieter, less touristy part of town where we stayed. The room was great -- simple, tasteful decoration, two windows with shutters, comfortable bed and a little balcony overlooking the street. This was a great spot precisely because it was NOT located over the Night Market. I loved watching the day-to-day activities of ordinary people -- an adorable family across the street who had a tiny outdoor "restaurant" (of one table), their grandchildren, the local dogs. You felt like you were on a side street in a village not a city. It had the added benefit of being on one of the streets where each morning at 7am the silent procession of Buddhist monks pass by to receive food and other alms from their neighbors. So all you had to do was roll out of bed and begin the day in an amazing way. The breakfast at their cafe was nothing to write home about but was great for yogurt, fruit, coffee and croissant.

Room Tip: I had a second floor corner room with windows on two sides. A second floor may be better for a little more privacy and a nice view of the street.
