I recently spent four days at Hotel Maison Souvannaphoum and I can subscribe to much of the praise this hotel has received. The location is conveniently distant from the hustle and bustle of this charming town yet within walking distance of most of its sights. The staff are friendly, helpful and efficient. They even prepared a 5 a.m. breakfast box upon my early departure. The well tended garden lush with blazing Bougainvillea. The pool clean and inviting. I had a tasty meal at the restaurant although the breakfast buffet was just average for a hotel of this class. The adjoining Angsana Spa definitely worth a visit. I had a first floor garden-wing room with terrace overlooking garden and pool (rooms 201 to 204 are farthest from any street noise). The room was clean and the bed turned evenings. The furniture white simple brightened by colourful cushions and fabrics. All necessary amenities available although a magnifying mirror and shoe horn and brush would have completed the set. Some minor inconveniences though: tight cupboard space, room lights - except for one reading bedside lamp - could not be controlled from the bedside, small fridge packed with cans and bottles with little space to store produce one might buy and finally, a quirky safe with a mind of its own ! All these minor issues do not detract from the overall comfort and pleasant atmosphere. One frustrating drawback though was the weak to non-existent WiFi although the signal improves slightly around the reception desk where one computer is available for guests. So sending or receiving email is a matter of chance. I was told by staff that they are aware of this shortcoming and that they intend to upgrade their system. Until they do I would withhold a half star but could rate this hotel with the other four.

Room Tip: Garden wing rooms 201 to 204, quiet, nice garden/pool view

This was our first time in Luang Prabang we stayed 22/12 to 26.12/13. What a lovely hotel, excellent staff, nothing too much trouble.Everywhere was well cared for and spotless, an ideal location for the town, just a short stroll away, lots to see and do, interesting temples , lots of side streets, bustling with different crafts, great to walk down by the river and sit and have coffee.
lots of bars, restaurants, shops.
We found the food in the hotel was very good, breakfast always fresh with a good selection, we also ate most of our evening meals here although not a big menu the food was excellent, and Serge the manager was always around to greet and meet. Happy hour around the pool, which is excellent after a day out to just sit and relax before getting ready for the evening. At this time of year the mornings and evenings are very cold BUT by 9.30 - 10am lovely and warm sun shining what a contrast , this exceeded our expectations a beautiful town with lots to see and do.
Christmas Eve with a differance although it was cool, dinner was in the gardens, all beautifully decorated, a visit from the local elders we all sat on a carpet on the floor and joined in local custom. Afterwards had dinner and local entertainment and then we gathered to light Chinese Lanterns. A different experience from usual Christmas Eve Galas very enjoyable.

Room Tip: 1st floor with balcony overlooking pool.

This was my first time in Luang Prabang and, therefore, my first time at Maison Souvannaphoum. What a delightful hotel it was. The room was comfortable, quiet and had all of the necessary amenities. The morning breakfast quite satisfying and delicious. We also booked the special Prince of Laos Dinner with a dance program and enjoyed the food and the dancing. The staff could not have been more attentive and the spa service I had (facial and massage) was among the best I have ever had. The location of the hotel was perfect...a short walk from the night market and the lovely town. We used the touring services of Exotissimo, our tour guide was Yai, and it made the excursion even more special. Would love to return to L.P and spend at least one week just wandering around. A very special place and a very special hotel.

When you return to a hotel or resort, it sometimes does not feel the same. However Maison Souvannaphoum lives up to everything. A charming hotel set in attractive and well cared for gardens just a short walk from the town although the peacefulness gives a sense of miles away. The rooms are clean, comfortable and have lovely balconies to enjoy an evening cocktail. Most rooms are set in the garden wing on two floors and either look over the pool area or front gardens.
All the staff are so helpful and always smiling and will do anything to help you enjoy your stay. While we were there the front staff arranged a day out on the river visiting four local villages something different from the other tours. The pool is private and refreshing on a hot afternoon.Breakfast are excellent all freshly made and the rice pancakes are something i look forward to .Twice weekly there is evening dinner with traditional music dancers & food which is very colorful. The manager Serge greets all the guests and makes everyone feel very special.
There is lots to see in and around the town lots of interesting temples and the walk over the bride to the other side of the river returning via one of the Bamboo bridges is so peaceful.
There are lots of bars restaurants and cafes in town which can be busy, but look around the smaller side streets and sit and enjoy the world go by as in a different era.
I would not think of anywhere else to stay in Luang Brabang. Long may it continue.

I am surprised to see that this hotel has had some poor reviews recently as we had a wonderful stay of five nights here at the end of January, over the Chinese New Year period.

It was quite cold in the mornings during that time, with thick fog until just before ten, but then the fog lifts and it's warm almost immediately, with temperatures rising to the high twenties/low eighties. We didn't find it a problem to have breakfast outside and just made sure we wore a jacket and/or sweater. We were perfectly warm in our lovely room in the garden wing - a sort of annexe - where we had quite acceptable internet reception, even though the signal was a little weak sometimes.

My husband was woken in the small hours by temple drums on some nights but this wasn't a big problem, and we hardly heard any road noise.

We thought the standard of the hotel was very good and that the restaurant was excellent. It's rare for us to eat at a hotel rather than go out, but we often preferred to dine at MS simply because the food was really top quality. We had one of the traditional Lao "boat" dinners (they did some special vegetarian dishes for me) accompanied by dancing - that was a particularly enjoyable evening. My husband would highly recommend the special curries which were the Prince's favourite (I have forgotten the exact name). We also loved the dried wild black mushrooms which were served as snacks. Breakfasts were good - especially the tamarind jam and the fantastic home-made yogurt.

The pool was freezing but nevertheless very pleasant for swimming and sunbathing. We thoroughly enjoyed resting and reading here in what was usually a very peaceful environment.

The staff were lovely and a big thank you to them for making our stay so special.

Many reviews have commented on the good location of this hotel and we found that it was absolutely ideal for short walks or more lengthy exploration - it's perfectly possible to walk from it right through the town to the promontory where the two rivers meet. In the immediate vicinity, on the same side of the road as you walk into town (and opposite the Joma cafe - good coffee!) the nearest temple is worth a look - you can't miss the naga heads at the foot of the steps. Turn left at the roundabout and walk down to the river and the large flight of steps for some spectacular sunset views/photos. On that same road you will also find a great local produce market and, next to it, another temple with a stunning array of wall paintings. There are also several currency exchange booths within five minutes' walk.

This was our third visit to Luang Prabang since 2008 - we'd stayed at Phou Vao on the two previous occasions, which was lovely but has now rather outgrown our budget - and I do hope that we will be able to return to LP one of these days for another stay at Maison Souvannaphoun, where we felt so much at home. LP is one of the most beautiful and relaxing destinations I know, and yet there is always something new to explore just around the next corner!

This was a great place to stay and walking distance to all the main attractions. Although the main street is close by, our room was very quiet and we heard no traffic noise at all. Our room, although not large, was well equipped and had a very nice verandah, which was a pleasant place to rest after a shopping trip. Serge, the manager is charming and takes time to talk to all the guests. The staff are very sweet and helpful. On our first night, there was a poolside barbeque and the staff took the time to explain all the dishes to us, including a very unusual and tasty dried mushroom snack, which is great with a Lao beer.

Room Tip: The garden rooms are quiet and the first floor rooms are the best sited.
