“Probably the best hotel in Luang Prabang. Staff are superb”
Reviewed 16 July 2014

What a lovely little hotel with probably the most helpful and courteous staff you will find anywhere in the world. Note that 5 star in Luang Prabang is probably only 4 star anywhere else in the world. My only word of advice is ensure you do NOT stay on the ground floor. Guests can start checking out as early as 5.a.m. and if they're in any of the rooms above you, you will certainly be woken up. It happened to me twice and once you're awake, you're awake. It's a good time to get up and watch the monks receiving morning alms though. The room has aircon and the bathroom would have been a little better with a bath but all in all, very comfortable, clean & nice. There is Wi-Fi but my Samsung Galaxy would not connect unless I went to the pool area. The breakfast is pretty good except when they do the a la carte breakfast (nowhere near as nice even though it's the same food). The drinks at the pool are very expensive so make the most of happy hour. Ideal location for the river, night market & town centre. Had a superb 6 nights here & would love to go back one day. Taxi or tuk tuk to airport is about £3 max and only 10 minutes away.

Room Tip: You must get a room UPSTAIRS if staying in the Garden Wings. Otherwise you will be woken up.

It's been a couple of months since we visited but I still want to share our experience. It's a small boutique hotel built in a very charming colonial style. We arrived early and the room was not ready so we asked if they could assist us with organizing a trip to the famous waterfalls - and 30 minutes we were on the way, with towels, water and a driver with car - amazing! We truly enjoyed every moment of our stay, the General Manager was present at all times to assist and make recommendations and the staff were very helpful. Rooms were generously fitted, ours had a balcony overlooking the pool. I can only recommend this property - if we return to Luang Prabang, and we just might, it will be our place to stay!

Room Tip: Upper floor, pool view, in the wing, not the main building.

I did not know that there is a Banyan Tree Hotel kind of place here in Luang Prabang, but just ran across the hotel and saw the Angsana logo.

I am glad that I took a visit. The hotel was nice, good price. Unluckily, I had a chance just for a massage, not the accommodation.

The massage was good for me, just standard Angsana service. The staff were nice and welcoming. Even better with the price offer. It 3 times cheaper than Bangkok price. Promotions like come 3 pay 2 was also irresistable.

My third stay here over a number of years and nothing has changed a great deal. A typical boutique hotel (whatever that means!) . I stayed in the basic room in the garden wing. Rooms are adequate size with high ceilings and have been fitted out modestly. All the wood work is painted in brilliant white gloss which seems to be done on fairly regular intervals as I seem to remember I detected the smell of fresh paint last time. The rooms are very clean and contain all the traditional amenities you could wish far and mine had a small patio with two comfortable chairs overlooking a garden. Maintenance seems to be a high priority here. Breakfast is a rather limited affair but there is an egg station and bacon everyday supplemented buy alternatives which change on a daily basis. Everything is well cooked and presented and more than enough. There is a pleasant and very clean swimming pol in which to relax after a days sight seeing. Staff are all very helpful especially the head receptionist. My only criticism of the hotel is price. I went during low season and paid about 60 pound sterling with Agoda including breakfast which was about right. Prices can double in the high season (as indeed does the airfare) and simply are not worth it

From the butterfly pea tea & friendship bracelets on arrival to a sincere farewell on departure, Maison Souvannaphoum is a colonial chic hotel with "heart." My husband & I stayed three nights & while we didn't get a lot of time to relax at the hotel given our busy itinerary, it was always a pleasure to return at the end of the day, especially given the warm welcome & friendliness of all the staff. The location is perfect, a short stroll from the night market & all of Luang Prabang's main sights. While the main building has historical significance (the dining room that opens on to the pool area is especially lovely), we stayed in the garden wing, where rooms are comfortable, very clean, & decorated in such a way to reflect the local culture & colours. Breakfast was cooked to order rather than buffet (perhaps as it was low season) but do try the Luang Prabang sausage, or the granola for something lighter. The pool area is in keeping with boutique style and a lovely place to cool down after a long day. Wi-fi could sometimes be a but hit & miss, but we found the same issue throughout our holiday in other places that we stayed & it didn't bother us anyway: it's a shame to go somewhere as lovely as Luang Prabang & spend your time staring at your iPhone! It's a place to just slow down & switch off. Through my travels, I have been fortunate to stay in many nice places, perhaps with fancier rooms or high tech facilities, but I think that quality of staff, service & kindness are what make a holiday memorable & Maison Souvannaphoum deserves 5 stars on all of the above. Thanks to everybody there for such a lovely stay & continued success, Maria & Danny, Ireland.
