“Beware the money changers”
Reviewed 24 November 2013

Have always/still love Luang Prabang but beware the $ changers.Went to one near Palace in Main Street,Th Sisavangvong.Handed over $100 AUD and agreed the correct amount was 700,000 kip.Was handed a bunch of 50,000 and 20,000 kip notes which on counting, amounted to 400,000 kip. When I pointed this out,I was handed more notes but discovered the sum was still 200,000 kip short. After I pointed this out, more notes were added and yet the total was still 150,000 kip short.I then reclaimed my $100 ,went to another changer across the road from the Palace where exactly the same thing happened.Went to a third changer in the street beside the Palace towards the Mekong.Again the first exchange was 100,000 kip short. At least this time, the correct amount was handed over on the second attempt.
Tips
1.Try to change easy amounts ie it is easier to multiply 7000 by 100 rather then 1.4 etc
2.Have someone with you to confirm the maths.
3.Don't walk away if unhappy.
4.Despite bank fees,consider ATM.

“No way back”
Reviewed 21 November 2013

Its a pity that Luang Prabang has fallen victim to the frenzy of salad eating, baggy trouser brigade tourists that tend to ruin these beautiful settings, with no respect or personal dignity wearing next to nothing swilling beer walking down the street, such a shame

“World Heritage City, Luang Prabang”
Reviewed 20 November 2013

Stayed in luang Prabang for a week and as it turned out was the most enjoyable place I have ever been to in our travels. The sight seeing in the local area is superb, dining every day in the many restuarants along the river was wonderfull. Accomodation was reasonable but you get what you pay for, our first night in a fairly run down guest house that had seen better days but clean and comfortable. The following nights we stayed in a guest house close to the river and cheap at US$25 a night was excellent. Very much enjoyed mixing it with the locals, drank many beers with a local boatman and the next day went with him to the Buddah cave. Here we got ripped but it was the same for everyone. Very sorry to leave as one must eventually do but I will be back as Arney would say.

“Beautiful old buildings”
Reviewed 18 November 2013

The town has such an olde worlde feel to it in some parts, they have done a good job of keeping a lot of the old features and not ruining the town with new builds. Wonder for days around the streets in this town and take in all the little shops and see the market spring to life in between the old buildings every night. Spend a day or 2 roaming the streets and nipping into each Wat. Worth a visit to come here.
