“Central and comfortable accommodation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2014

3 of us stayed here for 4 nights and we enjoyed our stay. The owner and his (gorgeous!!) wife were very helpful and made us feel very welcome in their guesthouse. The location is great, being only a short walk to the main street and also very close to where you can see the Buddhist monks doing their alm walk in the mornings. We stayed in what I was told during the booking process was a '2 bedroom suite', however it was actually 1 room with 2 beds. It was a comfortable room with extremely good air-conditioning, however after 3 weeks of travelling, we were looking forward to having the 2 separate bedrooms (as we were 1 couple and 1 single person travelling together). This may have been the error of the booking website we used. Another reviewer mentioned the separate shower in the bathroom. We did not have this, but I know the owners are in the process of updating all the bathrooms in each room. The bathroom we did have was still very acceptable.
After staying in other places for 3 weeks prior, we were used to having our rooms made up each day (unless we hung our signs up on the door knob stating otherwise), but I'm not sure they offer this service at the guesthouse, as our room was not made up once in the 4 nights we stayed here. I did ask reception to do this for us on day 2 but maybe my message was not received properly as the room was still not made up. Maybe they do not make up rooms without the guests asking specifically, however if this is the case, then maybe guests should be advised of this at check-in :)
Overall, we had a wonderful stay at this guesthouse and the staff were very helpful assisting us in booking a day tour, doing our laundry and driving us to the airport on our last day (at a cost).
I recommend staying at this guesthouse!

Thank you for taking the time to write a well informed review.
Sorry you thought you were getting a 2 room suite but we are only a 2.5 star guest house that offers 5 star service at a very low price. :)
All our rooms are only 1 room with different size beds. Which our website clearly states. So there must have been a mix up when the booking was made. We do have single rooms. so it may have been better for you to book 1 double and 1 single room.
We try and keep our prices as low as possible. So we make up and change all towels and sheets every 3rd day for free. If anyone requires it more often there is a notice in your room that says a small charge of $4 per day applies.
We are in a 3rd world country and we dry all our laundry in the sun. As we are also in the heart of the old heritage site we have not much space to wash 10 rooms of laundry every day.
But we can see you really enjoyed Luang Phrang and we thank you for your kind remarks.
Jimmy

The place is a good choice. Staff was really friendly with good english. The room was small and simple but enough for 1 people. It was clean but they not clean daily. Location is perfect, almost riverfront and close to the main street.

Hi and thank you for your review.
We are happy you enjoyed your stay and we have noted that people are not observing the no smoking signs. A new nonsmoking area has been made available downstairs outside, under shade.
I have to disagree about the size of our rooms because people forget we are only supposed 2.5 star guest house and except for our 2 cheapest rooms 1 single and 1 double all of our other rooms are bigger than most standard bedrooms in a guest house or even your own home.
But I do agree that we are good value for comfort, position and free travel advice.
Happy travels,
Robyn & Jimmy

Apple Guesthouse is on a quiet lane that allows foot traffic and the occasional motorcycle to move from the main Old Town tourist streets to the river. This makes it ideal for walking around the historic section of LP, and along the Mekong. Management is Australian-Lao, so communication isn't a problem, since Australian is quite a bit like English. The non-family members of staff are also very competent and helpful.

Rooms are slightly bigger than the beds. A couple and their bags pretty much fill the space. For more room to relax, there is an open porch overlooking the lane, but you're also looking right at other guesthouses, so you won't be out there for the view. The bathrooms are new and very functional. The standard of cleanliness is good, and staff and management are helpful with arrangements.

Although there's a posted no-smoking policy, many tobacco addicts pollute the porch pretty frequently, and the smoke sucks into the building and the adjacent rooms. A little stronger enforcement would be nice for nonsmokers.

If you spend the day in your room, be ready for fairly constant pounding from the silversmith next door. It won't shake your fillings, but the rat-tat-tat starts early, and they're very industrious. It's not an issue at night.

Given the price for this location, Apple Guest House is a solid choice for the 3-4 days that you're likely to want to stay in Luang Prabang.

I stayed at Apple GH for 2 nights with a friend and we fully enjoyed our stay. We were in Room no. 3 (twin beds) on the ground floor, and had no issues with noise etc. There was probably no view out the window, but by the time we got back to the GH we were exhausted from our explorations and just wanted to sleep / check our emails anyway. The room was well lit (did not have the horrible fluro lighting), and the bed (like all beds in SE Asia) was on the hard side, but comfy.

Being partway through our journey of SE Asia, this GH is by far the best value for money that we have encounted. We also felt incredibly safe staying here (being 2 females).

What Apple lacks in facilities (no wardrobe, no in-room safe, no daily turndown service- although I believe rooms get turned down every 3rd day if you stay longer), it surely makes up for in what it does have; friendly and very helpful owners and staff, it's REALLY CLEAN!, the shower is enclosed and separated from the toilet (very rare in GH's!), good wifi in rooms (alot of GH's in LP don't have this), and an EXCELLENT LOCATION.

Hidden down a quaint cobbled side alley, Apple is a hop, skip and a jump away from the Mekhong river, and 1 min walk to Tourist St. The well known French cafes Ban Vat Sene and Banneton are possibly 3-4 mins walk max, as is The Tamarind Restaurant on the Nam Khan river.

When I return to LP I will be staying here again, and will continue to recommend it to those looking for accomodation in LP.

Hi There,
Thank you for staying at Apple Guest House and also for your good recommendation.
Being in the middle of the heritage site of Luang Phrbang is our main attraction. We are a guest house and not a hotel which really why we can offer such a good price for your stay. We are very strict about clearness it is our top priority thank you for noticing that.
We look forward to seeing you again.

We booked on internet a room for 35$, and we were surprised that the room didn't look like the pictures on the website. This wouldn't have been a problem, but the price is realy too expensive for what you get( no breakfast,no fridge).
You can get the same or better room at half price just in front of the guest house.
The owner is nice and helpfull and the guesthouse is clean.

Sorry Marius,
If your room did not look like our pictures then it is because you are in one of our new rooms which are larger than the old rooms and have a much better bathroom with separate shower & toilet. These new rooms were were only finished just before the busy season and are still in the finial stages of putting the wood panelling up. We have to wait till the quiet season to do this, otherwise we disturb too many guest . I am sure if you visit us again you will see a big change.
Thank you for your comment.
Best wishes
Jimmy

Apple guesthouse is located in the center of everything- just a 5 minute walk to one of the main streets and market. My family of 4 stayed at Apple in February 2014. Room was clean and basic, no frills but none needed. Jimmy was very helpful setting up transportation and day trips for us, he speaks excellent English.
Luang Prabang is charming, clean, and unlike anywhere else we have traveled. The protection with UNESCO has kept the city's culture alive. I hope to visit again some day!

We were impressed by all the positive reviews of the Apple guest house before arriving and booked for 4 nights in the superior double with a balcony. All seemed good on arrival, except for no wardrobe.(just a few hooks on the wall). The constant banging from the silver Smith next door woke us every morning, he started at 8am and did not stop until 5pm. It was a nightmare. No peace and quiet during these hours. The smoke from the melting of the silver was really heavy on the chest as guests were sat on the balcony. We ended up planning our day to keep out of the way during these hours; payment in full had been taken in advance so checking out early did not feel like an option. Having said this Jimmy and his staff were very pleasant to us, save for not cleaning our room as specified on the third day, we had to ask for our first clean to be completed when we returned to the guest house on the third day. We raised all of these things with Jimmy and his staff but at no point were we offered a change of room or discount in recognition of the stress this caused. We did receive an apology on the way to the airport when it was too late to make us feel any better about our stay.

Sorry the noise from the local silversmith was so noisy when you stayed. I agree with you he must have had a big order because it was the worst, during your stay. Fortunately it did stop on your last day. Living in a small village with the UNESCO. local crafts are encouraged to stay.

I was unable to change your room as we were fully booked at the time. And yes I did forget your room clean on day three and that was my fault as Jimmy was away for 2 days and 1 night on his honeymoon. He married in October but was unable to go away until I arrived to look after the desk. We always try to make our guest as comfortable as we ourselves would like to be on our many trips away.
Once again Apple Guest House sincerely apologize for your inconvenience.and trusts the magnificent beauty of Luang Phrabang will stay with you..
best wishes

Apple Guest House offers quaint, personalized and friendly 10 room accommodation in the heart of this unique UNESCO heritage city, just behind the main tourist street and two doors from the mighty Mekong River and its varied restaurants for all budgets. A short walk will get you to the major attractions; temples, restaurants, tourist information, tours, and morning and night markets are just around the corner. Rooms are spotlessly maintained; many in teak, which is the traditional Lao style. All have air conditioning, fan, free Wifi, LED TV with CNN, BBC, HBO and the Australian network. The two superior rooms each have their own private balconies overlooking the quiet streetscape. One superior double room has a fantastic brand new private bamboo porch creating a stylish romantic atmosphere for people like "YOU". Our family rooms are very spacious. And the customer service by Lao owner Jimmy (a former Buddhist monk and who has lived with his Australian family for 12 years) and his beautiful wife "Nou", is truly exceptional. They both speak excellent English, have good local knowledge of the city and countryside and are very helpful with Tuk Tuk, travel and tour bookings.  The common balcony upstairs overlooks the alleyway’s activities, where you can sit and enjoy free tea, coffee, cool water and magazines, and is a popular place for people using the free WiFi.   Nou and Jimmy invite you to come and experience our warm hospitality. ... more   less
