This review is purely based on the room we were offered and the comparison to the published photograph is as Yogi bear to a Polar bear. The room was described as a cottage which meant a room off the courtyard via a flimsy door that had no internal locking system. This gave access to a small foyer with the toilet off with no door, then a screen door to the bedroom that had damp marks up the wall, an interesting smell and very little space. The 'patio' doors opened onto a very narrow walkway that was access to the adjoining room with scooters travelling past at head height a couple of feet away. It wasn't for us so we left.

Room Tip: Be careful of rooms offered

My stay at Sala Prabang, has been as peaceful, well mannered and calm as the Laotian people. The owner was there to meet, greet and farewell guests, night and day, and the staff were wonderful. Shyness is often misinterpreted. I totally disagree with the negative comments made about breakfast, which by the way, is FREE to all guests. Freshly brewed Laotian coffee (piping hot), the best omelette I've ever tasted over chargrilled sliced baguette. Every morning there was a different assortment of seasonal fruit: Sweet baby mandarins, papaya, pineapple, watermelon, rock melon, Chinese pear. Home made, non processed yoghurt with homemade muesli.
I had a balcony room, and had no trouble sleeping. The sounds of the occasional tut tuts, motorbikes and Laotian singing wafting across the Mekong are the sounds of Asia and part of the experience.

Sala Prabang has several properties; I stayed at two of them. Simple, clean rooms with hot showers. Not fancy, but nice. Locations in the center of Luang Prabang are perfect for walking, shopping, visiting the Night Market and participating in the morning alms ceremony. Breakfast was as others described - adequate but with limited variety. Marginal English speakers at both locations.

The hotel itself was ok. My room was attractive & reasonably comfortable. Weatherproof windows & doors would have been nice so I didn't wake up to outside neighbors' cigarette smoke coming in every morning. Can't comment on the breakfast. Proximity to attractions and restaurants was good. Staff was pleasant but not overly friendly or helpful and didn't speak English well. A Do Not Disturb sign for my door would have been nice. When I asked the front desk about this after being woken up twice by staff they said they don't have them. Huh???

Be aware that this is a very high traffic location with constant motorbike and pedestrian traffic till midnight most nights and till 2am on Fri & Sat nights. I'm not a light sleeper but I could not sleep at least two nights. One night I had to yell at people outside to shut up and leave - at 2:30am. The guy on duty was worthless when I asked him for help. Being sleep deprived I got sick and had a less enjoyable vacation.

Would definitely not recommend this hotel.

Our room ended up being in the building down the street from the main building. That was no problem as the room and building had great French colonial architecture. The room was sparse but great beams and wood details. It was a decent size with a bathroom that came with a shower and safe. They also provided two bottles of water and breakfast which is included in the rate. While the room was clean and the staff provided smiles, I would not stay at this hotel again. The beds were hard, staff gave wrong directions several times, no phones in the room, and breakfast not good at all.

Room Tip: If you are a lite sleeper, I wouldn't recommend the rooms with the balcony that face the street...

Loved the French colonialism influence to the design. The room (205) was sparse but had the essentials. It was a decent size with hot water and air con. The breakfast albeit a lovely location was not acceptable. Their was no selection just cold noodles or rice, a little fruit and cereal. You could get an omelet and toast. However when you stay multiple days one grows tired of those same options. The staff at breakfast was very nonchalant. Even though it was a buffet nobody greeted us ever. When I did get an omelet, the woman was not very warm. All the other stops before this, people were more friendly than I've ever experienced. Desk staff in second guesthouse was more friendly but gave wrong directions on multiple occasions. There is no access to an outside line in the second guesthouse so they have to call the main house and they call out. When booking my spa appt. at another hotel, he told me I could walk and gave general directions. Since he did not seem confident, I opted for a tuk tuk. Lo and behold, there was no way I could walk there and it was nowhere near where he said. Similar thing happened with dinner reservations. He never said he didn't know even though the street name and where he pointed to on map didn't match. Just beware if you are relying on staff for directions, appts., reservations. Laundry was fine and done same day, expensive but didn't have time to go elsewhere.

Room Tip: Room 205 is facing river but quite noisy with street traffic

This boutique heritage hotel is simply " WOW ". The french colonial architectural influence mix with Laotian wood design and decorated simply with good taste. Love the mozaics floor and bathroom tiles.

The owner is a Laotian architect himself, we found out and he loves to preserve its heritage. He has also owned and designed other buildings around Luang Prabang and turned into boutique hotels as well.
The doubleroom (only 2 rooms in front with balcony) has a very comfortable huge queensize bed. Very clean bedsheets and towels provided.
There is also a little safe in the bathroom. And very creative ideas the designer has to hide the open clothes hangers behind the ceiling to floor mirror !

The modern amenities are excellent for eg the bathroom has good water heating and airconditioning is good. One of the best part of this stay , which not many hotels there have, is their open-air breakfast area across the road and its so beautiful to have breakfast in the cool morning air by the River Mekong. When weather is not good, they have an indoor courtyard area for breakfast. The breakfast spread is basic and nothing to shout about . But the ambience and fresh air by the Mekong is fantastic.

We stayed 3 nights and we felt like our own home. The management is very friendly and warm.

Highly recommended. And if i go again, I will still book this hotel.
The room rate of US60 is reasonable.

However the bad thing is there is no TV or phone in all the rooms !! But with so many things to do in Luang Prabang, my 3 whole days passed easily without realising there is no TV nor phone until a friend mentioned it !

Overall, it is very comfortable and artistically designed and well managed boutique hotel.
Book early if you plan to stay bcos they are usually booked full.

Room Tip: the front 2 rooms has balconies facing the Mekong River are fantastic.
