i ate the rooster it was lovely bit salty. 5 Nights quiet and relaxing. The porter was brill really good lad. Early morn breakfast was no problem. Late nites were no bother either. Good location well worth a stay. $30 per nite great value. Bamboo bridge was washed away in the flood.
Cheers for a great stay

We reserved this guesthouse/hotel in advance. It was $35-40 a night, so we expected it to be really nice. I had read the reviews for the place and some were outstanding and others not so positive. I have to say that no one should stay here especially in room 1-1. Adjacent to the window of room 1-1 there is a rooster pen. These roosters don't only crow at dawn, but all throughout the night. We had a terrible night's sleep. The room had moisture issues and was not clean in addition to the noise. The one plus was that the bed was comfortable and they let us store our bags there during the day as we had to find a new place to sleep that night and were leaving on a tour all day. When we came back for our bags, someone had just checked into our old room. I ended up meeting up with this man on the street later that day and told him to buy earplugs. The next day I ran into him again and he was also checking out because he could not handle the roosters. Don't stay here is my recommendation!

Villa Merry Lao Swiss was our best choice in Luang Prabang for 5 days: building is not so old, rooms are very comfortable, people are friendly, and it was a good price-quality rate… you feel like at home!
The hotel its placed in a quiet street, not so far from de centre, you can walk or take a tuc-tuc (cheap).
Thank you

The Merry Lao Swiss is an eight room guesthouse, rather upscale as guesthouses go. Upon arrival, the twin room (the only of the hotel's eight rooms which is a twin) we had booked months in advance had been double/overbooked. We were offered a substitute room with a double bed for the first night. Being two guys (not a couple) this was a bit of a challenge and the owner did not offer a discount or any other sort of compensation. In my experience, this overbooking is not uncommon. Please note I reconfirmed my reservation one week before I arrived.

The twin room (21) we reserved and finally got was fine and offered the usual amenities one normally finds in a two-star hotel. The guesthouse website mentions toiletries in the bathroom but only offers mini soaps, so bring your own shampoo. And washcloths.

This room (21) boasted a balcony and yes, there was one. But half of the balcony was taken up by a large and noisy water heater. One of the two plastic chairs was broken. All in all it was not a pleasant place to relax. Across the street is a very noisy bar but the owner has installed double glazed windows which help with the very loud music coming from the "Hive Bar." All the same, bring earplugs for a restful sleep. To be fair this applies to most of Luang Prabang.

Please beware of the double room on the ground floor which has no windows. A very nice French couple were having a fit with the owner over being booked in this room. The woman was literally in tears.

Basically I liked this guesthouse but I feel it is overpriced. We paid $40 USD/night and the hotel website now advertises the same room for $50 USD/night. This price, in my opinion, is very high for Laos, and for this guesthouse in particular. We decided to stay one extra night but the Merry Lao was not available. We walked around, enquiring among the many other guesthouses and found a similar property for $10 USD/night. We stayed there for two nights and while mini soaps and kimonos were not offered it was comparable in most respects, even offering air conditioning and yes, a small balcony...but without the noisy water heater.

The Merry Lao does not accept credit cards. Cash only. This is common in Laos, but in my opinion outrageous for a property charging higher than average rates. There is no reason other than the owner's greed for not accepting credit cards. It is inconvenient to have to carry so much cash and unnecessary in this day and age. I can understand a cash-only policy in a place only charging $10 or $20 per night but once you're into the $40+/night category there is no other possible reason to not accept credit cards.

It's not my intention to bash the Merry Lao, I enjoyed my stay. But you can get comparable accommodation at a much lower cost. So don't be afraid to look around. To the Merry Lao's credit, the staff were friendly and helpful and the free breakfast was tasty, just avoid the luke warm coffee and have the green tea instead.

We were looking for an inexpensive place to stay in Luang Prabang - somewhere in between the hostels and hotels. Having used a guesthouse in Siem Reap, we searched for a similar standard (and price) in Luang Prabang. We were suggested to stay at the Merry Lao-Swiss Hotel. The hotel is just a few minutes walk from the center of town. The rooms are clean and nicely decorated - not extravagant but not industrial. We were in room 1-1. It has a large bed for two people and the room is a good size, including cable TV and a wardrobe, as well as a desk and a small sitting area with two chairs and a table. The bathroom is private; but this room had a shower room. In other words, there is a curtain to keep the toilet and basin/counter from getting wet while one showers. I believe they have other rooms with baths, so if this is important to you, you should make the request.

The breakfast is made to order, with a few choices: eggs (scrambled or omelette) with baguette or banana pancakes or just the baguette. Drink choice is coffee, Ovaltine or tea. The second day, we were offered some fruit.

The staff tries hard to please. The only downsides are: there is a noisy bar across the street, so early retirers may be affected (the owner says that thicker windows have now been installed); the rooster starts crowing well before dawn, so late or even early risers may be affected. Based on the location of our room, we were bothered by the latter but not the former. Recognizing that Luang Prabang is not a big city, this could be a problem at several of the hostels, hotels and/or guesthouses.

The owner recommended an oustanding dinner at Thamnak Lao restaurant. The food was simply outstanding - delicious and ample and very cheap !

For the price, other than the over-achieving rooster, it is a nice alternative to the hostels and hotels.

  • Liked — good value; great breakfast in a nice atmosphere
  • Disliked — the rooster crowing at 5:30AM !
  • Tips/Secrets — google Merry Lao-Swiss and you can book directly with the owner
