The Baron hotel is clearly very old and has lots of stories to tell! It has a lot of charachter, and it's a lovely old building. The bedrooms are clean, a bit basic and uninspiring, but functional. Some of the shutters on our windows had clearly seen better days and so every time the windows were opened pigeons tried to get into our room! But it's a charming hotel.
The old man at reception is very friendly and can arrange reasonably priced tours and gives very good advice about where to visit in the old town. The location of the hotel is good, its about a five minute walk to the souks of the old town; about ten minutes to the 'christian' area, and is right in the heart of the modern town, although this is a bit charachterless.
The bar is fantastic... you can imagine all the history that has happened and the stories that have been told in years gone by!
It's a nice, quirky hotel. If bland, identical chain hotels are your thing then this is not the place for you.

Faded grandeur is the right description for this hotel. Rooms are big and clean even though I spotted once a cockroach as the hotel is really old and ill-maintained. The stuff was friendly, breakfast was OK but you need to have a big imagination to experience the glory of the past. Very expensive for what you get.

Stayed here in June 2010 with business group doing weekend tourist outing. Staff is very nice but the place needs some help. We had a suite to accommodate married couple plus 12 year old and in the two rooms there were 4 broken air conditioners. WHen one stops working, they install the next without taking out the broken one. The room was unpleasant with no air, even with all windows and all doors open. The desk sent someone up several times who fiddled with it and left but never explained that it was just broken. When the toilet also stopped flushing, we changed rooms. There were no triples available so hotel put us into 2 separate rooms at same cost. The other rooms were smaller but fine and comfortable.
Terrace is lovely in the evening, and if you sit in the far corner, you can get slow but free wifi. Make sure to go into the lobby room on the right, with memorabilia from TE Lawrence, etc.

Yes the Hotel Baron a relic of the past. Yes, its well past its prime, in desperate need of major renovation or knock-down, but its still has the charm & character to entice me back again one day.
If your preference is for antisepictally clean chain hotels, then you won't like the Baron. If you put up with a bit of grottiness, then the Baron will reward you with its historic charm.

The Baron Hotel is full of history and somewhere that locals and tourists alike are very prouod of. The rooms are certainly older, but the hospitality and location can not be beaten. If you love history, you will appreciate going back in time at the Baron Hotel

The rooms are a little disappointing and the best restaurants are a bit of a hike, and there will be better value for money options in Aleppo. But for the character of the bar, restaurant, lounge and reception area, I think it's worth paying extra to stay in the Baron. There's a real style about the place - very little appears to have changed over the years, and there's lots of memorabilia from the age of Agatha Christie and T E Lawrence - and if you're into shabby chic/faded grandeur you'll really love this place.

Travelling around the world, I can honestly say that this hotel has character, and a lot of it. Why would you visit Syria in general and Aleppo in particular if you plan to stay at Sheraton? This may not be, in terms of amneties, at european or american standards, but who cares! They will stay at Sheraton, and the travellers will stay here. Long story short: charismatic building, imposing lobby, charming bar, lovely restaurant (in the summer I think that dining on the terrace is bliss), 4.5 m high ceilings, 10 sq meter bathrooms, old (but fully functional) furniture, lovely staff, and last but not least, charm.
Hope the place will not get full of loud hordes of tourists (they know who they are), and will keep theyr style and not increase the price :).
