“I love the old houses”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2014

There is not much to see or do in Jeddah. I like Balad mostly because of the old houses. If you walk through the souk, you can see a few beautiful houses. You can also walk over to the older area and see a lot of really old buildings, some of whom are half collapsed. But I still find it all very interesting. It can also be fun to talk to the sales people and bargain for some things. There are not many things in Balad that I "need", but it can be fun to spend the evening strolling around there. I recommend the candy/date stores.
And I definitely recommend that women try to drink as little water as possible, hold it in as long as you can, and bring your own toilet paper if you definitely have to use the bathroom while there, as those kind of facilities are kind of hard to find there, and very filthy!
Oh, and keep track of prayer times (there are apps for that), as everything locks down during prayers.

“This old city area is worth a visit.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2014

Please plan your visit to this area around prayer times. For a drive around the old city areas, Friday morning is ideal as there is no traffic. Any other time can be chaotic. There is a large souq in Balad but is not very exciting, there is typical clothing and jewellery shops with not a lot of variety or culturally interesting shopping. Saudi shopping is open and closed at times which frustrates visitor shoppers and is hard to figure when is the best time to find all shops open.

“Lovely place during winter”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

Balad is lovley place during winter and Ramadan, it is a historical site with old buildings made from sea corals.
During the holy month of Ramadan you can find a lot of kiosk selling the traditional food and sweet, also you can buy traditional clothes and Islamic arts.
Balad is crowded with various nationalities which adding flavor to it.
to cut it short you must visit this place in Jeddah otherwise you'll missed a lot.

“Yeah, it's old”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2014

Saudi is not much focused on tourists. It's willingness to preserve its heritage seems low. Balad may stand out in the attempt to make Jeddah as non-descriptive as possible. This is a genuine nice place to be. Nice souk with lots of franchises offering various goods, ranging from (traditional) clothes, Korans, to jewelry. I have not found any decent restaurant as their seems no food culture like in Italy or France. The streets are crowded with various nationals and the street vendors are adding flavor to it. If Jeddah would have had a warm heart, it would be pulsing in Balad. For Saudi standards I would have given it 5 stars but compared to other locations in the world it is around average. That is a pity as the Saudi's on average are nice friendly people. I agree in general with the observations of my fellow travelers.
It is interesting to follow prayer time in the evening at the big square near the Corniche Commercial Center. Irrespective of your beliefs one has to admire their devotion to take some time off for worship.
