“Impressive chruch”
Review of Vank Cathedral

Vank Cathedral
Reviewed 28 April 2014

I think the church is very impressive. I have never seen in no church frescos in this world such explicit scenes of Jesus torture or the hell portrayed full of women and a female satan (very explicitly female...). The entrance is 3000 T (30 000rial) only.

Walking there from the historical bridge takes about 30 mins, so I suggest you to take a taxi. Negotiate and don't pay more than 5000T (50 000rial) one-way from Imam Square.

Absolutely amazing murals depicting the bible-stories, in a way which only Michelangelo can do better. One of the most colourful churches I have ever seen.

This is one major reason why all you see in Iran is mainly Iranian architecture. The similarity of this church to the mosques, the shape of the dome, the decoration, etc all tell you that some artists and architects have built them according to the trends and interests prevailing in Iran during centuries.

The cross on top of the dome is one major sign it's a church, not a mosque. Of course, there are Armenian inscriptions on the facade too.

The mural painting inside are a change for those who have seen lots of mosques during their visits in Iran.

The museum highlights the sufferings Armenians have gone through in 20th century. The items are indicating Armenian life among other topics. I recommend to visit it as well.

Beautiful architecture , a mix design of mosque and church. The paintings of walls are stunning and it takes hours to watch them in details, but unfortunately in April it was verry crowded and we couldn't stay more than 1 houre there.

After a week of seeing only mosques, it was a nice change to see this cathedral and its interesting fusion of design (part cathedral looking, part mosque looking). The frescoes inside are spectacular and the museum was also quite interesting - we probably lingered longer because it was a freezing day and it was lovely and warm inside!
