“Comfy hotel for a budget-stay, don't expect any frills.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2012

After lots of online searches and reading reviews on tripadvisor, we stayed in Citymax Al Barsha for our easter-week dubai vacation. We chose this above others because of its proximity to the Mall of the emirates and the metro station. Which we later regretted because the metro is very inconvenient! We found taxis are a much cheaper and comfy option to travel around in dubai. So if you're a tourist, you're better off staying in Deira or Bur Dubai areas, which is closer to most the activities you'll want to do.

Pros:

1. A 2min walk to the Mall of Emirates [Ski dubai + loads of big shopping brands + Food courts + Cinema]
2. a 10min walk to the metro [If you really have all the time in the world and dont mind the walk from the stations to the point of interest]
3. Clean, Cosy and modern rooms with a very comfy bed [1 Complimentary water bottle just on the first day since its 'budget friendly']
4. Smooth and easy check-in and check-out.
5. Free-wifi in the lobby and Free LAN in the rooms.
6. Free Shuttles to the Wildwadi and Jumeirah beach [Gets full very fast] We forgot booking and ended up taking a cab.

Cons:

1. Breakfast is very limited choice and boring. You're better off eating at the MOE or any of the small joints just outside the hotel.
2. Concierge comprises of this rude lady who is working for a travel company and would help you only if you bought tours from her. When we asked for some directions she just acted like she doesn't know anything!
3. There is a fridge in your room, but empty so take a small trip to a store closeby and stock up on water and other munchies!
4. Incase you forget your toothpastes, shaving kits, you'll need to buy from the hotel!

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor for a goodnight's sleep!

Dear SpreadingSmiles,

Thank you for choosing Citymax Al Barsha and for your detailed comments on tripadvisor.com
We are pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay with us.
To respond in detail on the mini bar, the in-room fridge is not filled in order to provide mini bar items at reasonable prices through the vending machines on each floor which couldn’t be possible with a filled mini bar.
For more options our coffee shop is open 24/7 as well as deliveries via room service.

We hope to welcome you again upon return to Dubai.

With kind regards

Stayed in this hotel in April 2012 for several nights, it was last minute booking so i needed something at affordable price and convenient location. Hotel is pretty basic, so don't expect too much. Very small rooms even for one person, not enough space to store your luggage, the so called "wardrobe" is without closing doors and not enough drawers for clothes. The safe is over the mini fridge which warms pretty well the things you keep inside the safe, so be careful with your electronic gadgets. The A/C usually works at 22-23 degrees with no possibility to increase temperature. The bathroom is very small, with tiny shower and not movable, which is inconvenient especially for ladies with long hair, water comes out of the shower as it has not closing door. The only toiletries is cheap liquid soap, that caused me bad hand allergy.

The biggest plus of the hotel is that you just cross the street and you are in the Mall of Emirates where is also the metro station, opportunities to have a meal and big carrefour supermarket.

Other positive points is they try to keep good standards of hygiene, the rooms were cleaned each day and towels changed, the TV has decent choice of channels. There is tea/coffee electric kettle with some supplies of nes coffee, tea and sugar.

No free wifi internet was offered to the guests, which is kind of dispappointing too.

Dear fema,

Thank you for selecting our hotel this time and for sharing your opinion.
We appreciate your comments and could read that you had a good stay overall.

However I like to respond in detail to some points which we understand reduced your comfort.
With great concern we read about the inconvenience with our liquid soap. To answer in detail I need to highlight that it is the first time we received a negative feedback since we opened almost two years ago but we do take note of course. We have carefully chosen one of the market leading brands as their products are specially developed and tested for hospitality and used by renown hotels worldwide.
We provide the soap & shampoo as ‘press and wash’ version which is environmental friendly. Should a guest require further amenities, we offer lady & gents accessory-bags for a small amount of AED 22 at our coffee shop. These bags include 10 selected amenities such as body lotion, eye gel, cleansing gel, dental kit etc.

Regarding the guest rooms, they are economically sized to be able to offer competitive rates considering the great location.
We receive a lot of positive feedback in terms of the fresh décor and well equipped rooms with amenities needed by both, leisure and business travelers such as laptop-size safe, electric sockets suitable for various plugs, working desk with integrated cable for internet connection, complimentary hospitality tray, removable luggage rack etc. As I mentioned in a previous response, due to increased guest requests all guest rooms will be upgraded with WiFi connection shortly which so far has been available only in the coffee shop.

Since I saw that you are a regular visitor to Dubai, we would be pleased to welcome you back again at Citymax Al Barsha upon your return.

Please do not hesitate to contact me under executiveoffice@citymaxhotels.com if you have any further questions.

With kind regards

For the price paid, this was a very good hotel, rooms are small, but have everything needed, and free internet in the room. The food in the Huddles bar was not fanastic, but hey, bar food,
and music bar rocked after 9PM. The roof top pool area is small with about 20 lounge chairs, but never had a problem finding one to use and a small gym/workout room, with machines and free weights, very clean. Close to the Emeriate's Mall, and not far from the beach, 30 minute walk.

Room Tip: Higher up, 14 floors, and at the front.

1) The Lobby smell is SMOKE, SMOKE, SMOKE. There needs to be better ventilation there.
2) Staff on a Wednesday night seemed very disorganized. We had to wait 20 minutes for them to figure out if we had a room reservation. Stayed two days.
3) Rooms are small and cramped if you are a tall person. I traveled with a friend, and between us, we had three suitcases.
4) Internet connection in room was BEAUTIFUL! Internet in Lobby was dismal.
5) Bathroom was clean, and while there is a screen to block water it doesn't block all of the water.
6) The TV had very limited channel selections, but who came here to watch TV, anyway?
7) I was on the 6th floor and could hear some of the noise from the bars below on the ground floor. It was there, but not enough to keep me awake.
8) The bed was too soft for my liking, but I did sleep alright.
9) Storing food in the refrigerator was a joke. Just forget about it. I don't think it was even cold in that thing.
10) Because the Mall of Emirates is one block away across the street, my friend and I opted to eat in the Mall at different restaurants instead of at City Max. Neither of us like smoke, so eating at the mall was smoke free and cheaper.
11) There is a HUGE CARREFOUR in the Mall of Emirates to get water and other supplies.
12) The Metro is a good 15 minute walk outside the hotel, through the Mall, and then to the Metro.
Great location! Would recommend for tourists and backpackers wanting an upgrade.

Room Tip: This hotel was recommended by my friend's friend, both of whom live in Muscat, Oman. Go directly...

Dear marzyAworldtraveler,

Thank you for staying with us and for your detailed review.
It is our constant aim to improve our product and services where needed and we do take all our guest feedback serious.
To respond in detail to the cigarette smoke, we are aware that during peak times in our sports bar, the existing smoke-filtration reaches its limit and we are already looking into possibilities of upgrading the system shortly. Other than our two bars, smoking is not allowed in the restaurant or public area inside the hotel.

Once again thank you for choosing Citymax Al Barsha and to share your opinion.

I would say the Citimax is good for tourists and just OK for business. The room was modern and clean, though not too large, and the amenities were fine. The rooftop pool area is nice, but not huge, so if you want a sunbed then you should be there early. The two bars on the ground floor (sports and music) were good, and the location next to the Mall of the Emirates is very handy for shopping and the metro. From a business perspective the wifi (paid) did not reach my room, they failed to collect my washing despite me calling to inform them, the iron was no good, empty mini bar - all things which would probably not bother you a bit if you were in town on holiday but which throw you a bit as a business traveller.

Dear Bustrav66,

Thank you for your recent stay with us and for sharing your opinion on tripadvisor.com
We are pleased to hear that you overall enjoyed your stay and appreciate your opinion on areas where you feel we can improve.
As you highlighted, Citymax Al Barsha is perfectly located which suits both, business and leisure travellers and so it is our goal to provide services required by all guests.
Regarding the internet connection, WiFi has been available in the public area while rooms are equipped with internet cables. During the next coming weeks we are upgarding the internet connectivity and will be able to provide WiFi in all guest rooms. On each guest floor we offer popular minibar items in vending machines at far lower prices than common for hotel minibars. Overall we received positive feedback by guests. I also like to mention that we do offer a full 24 hrs room service at reasonable prices.

Once again, we appreciate taking the time for your review and hope to welcome you again at Citymax Al Barsha.

Stayed at Citymax AlBarsha for 6 nights.
Room and bathroom was very clean and tidy, bed comfortable, had to shower carefully to avoid flooding the bathroom. We had a room on the fourth floor at the rear of the hotel. The negatives being that you could often hear noise from the downstairs venues and the room was overlooked by the building opposite.
Limited choice for breakfast but when you consider the cost (AED 30) you really cannot complain too much.
Ideal location at Mall of the Emirates with easy access to metro. Taxis readily available outside the hotel 24/7.
Shuttle bus to the beach for 10 passengers at 3 different times in the morning, needs to be booked 24hrs in advance, takes you to the public beach adjacent to the Burj Al Arab. Hotel also offers a package to rent for a small charge a beach towel, beach mat, cool bag and umbrella for the beach
We would stay here again if we return to Dubai.

Room Tip: High floor overlooking Mall of the Emirates with views towards Burj Al Arab (on a clear day).
