“Old Dubai is a treat”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2014

Unfortunately, we visited Dubai in mid-June meaning it was unbearably hot. But, we still took an afternoon to escape the "consumption en masse" of the malls and dive into Dubai's historical quarter. Here, you'll find shady alleyways, historic architecture such as wind towers, intriguing art studios/galleries, heritage houses as well as the Grand Mosque.

It is definitely worth spending some time in the Bastakia Quarter - the highlight for us was to see the ruins of the original city walls which you stumble across here & there throughout the Quarter. It gives you some perspective on just how rapid Dubai has grown from such humble beginnings into the global city it is today.

“Best in the winter months”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2014 via mobile

As all the other reviews will tell you this is the heart of old Dubai. A hundred years back you would have found it just the same. With so much new Dubai many people will overlook the Bastakia. However I would recommend a visit anytime between November and April when the weather favours being outside. Plenty of places to grab a coffee and lots of little nic-nac shops to browse. Avoid in the summer as it really is too hot to be outside.

“If you are interested in history and architecture”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2014 via mobile

This area is nice if you are interested in history and architecture. The wind towers and building styles are not Arabic but typically Persian (you will have seen the same if you have ever travelled to Yazd or Kerman for instance). Dubai still has a large number of Iranians living there. The highlight of the day for me was crossing the creek in an abra (traditional boat) to visit the gold souk on the other side (i was underwhelmed by it, by the way).

“Walk the old quarters”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2014

Having once again stayed in The Bur Dubai for part of our trip, it meant another opportunity to visit the Bastakia Quarters.

This is part of the historical Dubai and you can easily do a walking tour. This was an area started in the 19th century by wealthy textile and pearle merchants from Bastakiya, Iran.

Its a step into the past but now restored with boutiques, stores, art galleries and cafes in narrow passageways.
