Ritoque Raices is just a small, simple friendly little beach hostel. And with it we found both pros and cons.
The pros are that the staff is just wonderful there. Very helpful and welcoming. The hostel is situated nice and close to Playa Ritoque, and the beach is soooo long. You can walk on it forever. It was a very reasonable price, too. The included breakfast is also good, simple, but good: fresh fruit every morning, teas, coffee, jams, butter, and breads.
The cons are that it is a little difficult to get to. We took a bus from Mendoza to Vina. From Vina we had to hire a taxi for 25.000 Chilean Pesos (almost $50 US dollars!) and that was after haggling with the driver for a while. The other option is taking the local bus, but it was a little intimidating to try to catch and with more than a backpacking backpack, it'd just be too difficult. Another con is that the hostel wasn't quite as clean as we were hoping it'd be. Our room and bathroom had quite a bit of sand in them, and the bathroom looked like it hadn't been scrubbed in a while and had some mold growing in the tile. Our bed was another drawback. It was pretty awful. We could feel the springs poking through the mattress and woke up every morning with back and neck aches (we did hear the other beds were better than ours though, so maybe just don't stay in the middle house. Pick the higher or lower house). The last con is the beach is not quite as remote as we expected it to be. There are a decent amount of people visiting there, especially during summer vacation time (November-ish-March-ish in S.A.). However, it wasn't completely packed either. It also was a bit dirtier of a beach. There unfortunately was quite a bit of trash on it.
Overall, we were a little disappointed with our stay over all there, between both the hostel, as well as the beach. If you are expecting a no-frills hostel that's just super laid back in a little beach town to just escape and relax for a few days, this is your place. It's not a great swimming beach (cooler water), and the weather can be cooler, even in the heat of the summer. Regardless, it was a nice place to see if you want to escape from the packed beaches of Vina and live like the locals for a few days.
