“Beautiful B&B in Historic Home”
Reviewed 15 March 2013

My husband and I spent two nights at the lovely Casa del Almirante. The house is a beautifully renovated historic home in the Recreo neighborhood of Vina del Mar. The decor is clean and fun and mingles antique and vintage pieces with fun art and funky wallpaper. The house has wifi throughout, offers complimentary breakfast as well as sweeping views of Vina rooftops and the ocean. I would say that the only (minor) downside is the location. It's a little bit away from the center, but is close to a colectivo stop which will get you where you want to go quickly. Casa del Almirante definitely provides a taste of the historic character of the city. It's a great value and the caretakers are very sweet and helpful.

The worst part about this place is finding it. GPS is unhelpful in the winding, tortuous streets of Vina del Mar. I only found it because I looked it up on Google Street View beforehand and recognized it by sight. Once you're in however, it's fantastic.

The historic mansion has such character and charm. You're greeted by what is no doubt a hundred year old gate, you climb the steps to the entrance of the property and from the terrace of the property, are treated to an amazing view of Vina and the Pacific.

Jose and his wife are friendly and eager to help. Jose checked us in and ran down a list of suggested destinations in the city and provided us with a map before showing us to our room, the Pacifico Suite on the top floor. Up a huge, historic stairway and then behind your door and up your private staircase is a very large suite with two queen beds, a kitchenette, bathroom, and office area. There are absolutely amazing views--day and night--out huge windows that you can open to let the breeze and sounds of Vina in. The only thing I might change was the bathroom. Because it is a loft, the ceilings are sloped, which makes showering somewhat awkward. I mentioned it to Jose and he said they plan to renovate this bathroom and remedy this issue in the upcoming off-season.

The place was immaculate, and handsomely furnished with hip, stylish decor. I suspect either Jose or his wife has a background in interior design (or just excellent taste), and if not, they hired a professional. Fantastic amenities, including wi-fi, a bookshelf sound system, flat screen TV, and binoculars to take in the views. Little touches like stocking the bathroom with decent soaps, body wash, and cotton balls made the place feel upscale. While they ask that you don't take their towels to the beach, they're happy to provide beach towels upon request.

Breakfast was typical--lunch meats, fruit, yogurt and breads.Coffee and tea were available as well. I think the part I enjoyed most about breakfast however was the conversation. You sit at a large table with the other guests, and we met the nicest and most interesting people while we were there.

I think one of the things that made this such a great experience was that Jose and his wife were so friendly and eager to help--they really made us feel welcome. And you can tell they really care about the place. Another thing that made this experience so fantastic is what a great value it was. We felt really spoiled having the entire loft to ourselves with such amazing views in such an amazing, beautifully renovated and modern, yet historic, mansion.

In sum, if there is a better place to stay in Vina del Mar, I can't imagine it.

Room Tip: Go for the Pacifico suite on the top floor for great views!

I used to live in Vina del Mar and I know the area well. I also worked in two different and very big hotels in Vina. For my visit to Vina, I wanted to find a place to stay that brings to you the character of this great town. Even when you get ready to go to sleep! This lovely hotel does it. You could stay in the Sheraton; you could stay in other impersonal and huge luxurious hotels in the area and pay 10 times more and you will never get the warmth and the experiences that you get when you are more in touch with the people, the area and its culture.

- LOCATION: La Casa del Almirante is located in a residential area of Vina del Mar called Recreo (which is the same area as the Sheraton). The hotel is in a small pasage and therefore very quiet at night and day. The connection to the centre of Vina is perfect. You can take a "colectivo" which is a shared taxi a few steps away from the hotel. They pass by every couple of minutes and will cost you 70 p. You could also walk to "Avenida Valparaiso" which takes about 10 minutes and to the very centre of Vina and its "plaza". Transport is really easy and frequent.

- CHECK IN: Jose Manuel and his wife Maria Jose are the owners of this lovely hotel. A few days before the check in was due, I received and email with maps and information. It made us feel like they were expecting us and they cared for us.
We arrived earlier but this was not a problem and we were made feel welcome. The place looked beautiful! Outside full of flowers, really well looked after, with a fantastic view as it is on a high area of Vina where you can see the houses, character full buildings and the sea.

- INSIDE THE HOTEL: The decoration is great. Really good. Neat and full of personality. Beams. Wood. Lovely sofas for a nice evening in....

- ROOM: Our room was fab!! I loved it! It was really big. Two big windows with shutters gave us a superb view. It felt bright and warm. Two big beds with lovely good quality bedding, excellent pillows! Really comfortable. Satellite TV....dressing gowns... spotless! The bathroom for our room was outside. It is the only room with the bathroom not en-suite but what a bathroom!!! Old style, with a cast iron bath tub with legs, with a window where you can light candles, with a separate shower area. Nice hot water with good pressure. Toiletries... spotless too.

- BREAKFAST: In the morning, you can go downstairs to the dining area to have breakfast. This is a typical Chilean breakfast which consist of bread, toasts, ham, avocado, tomato, cheese, cereal, yogurt, cakes....don't expect a full English! you are not in England! ;-)

- OVERALL: This is a great place to stay if you really want to get a good feeling of what this fantastic area of Chile has. It is a Hotel Boutique, nothing "mass made", where you will be treated with care and warmth and not be called something like "the guest in number 502" or something...
Hope to be back soon!!!

Room Tip: The room at the top is the most great thing!!

The B&B is just gorgeous. Extremely clean and comfortable rooms. We arrived at an odd time and later the owner came up and introduced herself. She was helpful and recommended a delicious restaurant for dinner and organised us the get there (all in good english). Breakfast had many options and lots of food. It's a decent walk to the main centre.

Fantastic stay and would highly recommend.

We went to visit our daughter who was studying abroad and picked the perfect place to stay! Close to the metro and close enough to walk to the shops. Jose and his wife gave us a map of the area and some ideas of places to go and off we went. We had the top of the bed & breakfast and loved it. Very clean, quaint and the owners were so helpful and very friendly. Spoke English which is a plus. We would definitely recommend La Casa del Almirante to everyone! Pam and David, Stacy Mn USA

Charming , boutique Bed and Breakfast, first opened in April 2012 . Would highly recommend it. Location is excellent. Parking is available. Mass transit very close by.
Proprietors are very accommodating, warm, friendly people who are gracious and helpful speaking both English and Spanish. The entire property is very charismatic, cheerfully decorated, clean, comfortable, providing spacious rooms. The generous Continental Breakfast is served in a lovely dining room and the general setting area or living room is inviting. Excellent Wi-Fi. .
