Well we were in the UP for a couple weeks traveling, sometimes camping on our way to the Apostle Islands. We took a recommendation from a travel guide to stop at the Big Bear Lodge in Alpena and unfortunately took that advice. The room was filthy and there was hair in our bed, I guess the sheets had not been changed in between guests. Needless to say we slept in our sleeping bags and brought in our own pillows. In addition, there were some shady people, about 10 in the next room. They watched us closely as we brought our bags in. I think they were living there, temporary workers. We definitely felt we were getting sized up. We ended up moving a piece of furniture in front of the door and kept one eye open all night. Of course we left early and didn't even use the showers, saved that for our next destination....I think this place has potential, the area for check in was very quaint with the typical lodge type decor such as animal heads and an overall feeling of a log cabin. The lodge is for sale and the man that checked us in gave us the impression that it was more then the owner could handle at this point due to health issues so I think that's the problem. This would be a great place to buy and fix up.
