“Great and beautiful hotel, great service and great restaurant”
Reviewed 29 August 2012

We visited this hotel with 2 toddlers and were very pleased with beautiful room, with a balcony which had lake side views.the hotel stuff is great and helpfull, the breakfast is very good,in the same restaurant you can have your dinner, which is great, you can also upgrade to half board, you wouldn't regret it, the hotel was a free parking next to it, but no bell boy, so you need to carry your own luggage. When it is hot, there is no air condition, which was bit disturbing, but rest of the days were ok, the location is great for st Wolfgang , you could take a boat cruise to st. Gilgen or further, or go by foot to the main street.
Loved this hotel and would recommend it

Location, Location, Location!!!

2 reasons -
One, the hotel may not have access to the lake, which others like Weissen Rossel and Cortisen have, but the higher rooms atleast have a wonderful view of the lake.
Two, the hotel is right at the start of the lake strip, so you can simply park your car at the hotel and then roam the strip on foot.

Dont be disappointed by the indifference at the reception - half the times, we didnt see anyone at the reception of Hotel Peter. But their service in the restaurant is good..

All in all, good location - and thats what matters in Wolfgangsee.

Room Tip: Choose the higher floor rooms - the views might not be good at the lower floors

Stayed at this hotel for two weeks and had a really good holiday. Everyone was friendly and helpful, the food was good and the view from our room (308) was fantastic. Would definately recomend it. Had exceptionally hot weather over the fortnight which hindered our plans for walks but it did not spoil our enjoyment of the village and surrounding area.

I have not stayed in every hotel in St Wolfgang but quite a few, and I would rate Hotel Peter as the best. It certainly exceeds those with famous names or trendy status. This is because the rooms are simply excellent. Even the basic rooms are far from basic and most have a sleeping area, a sitting area and a balcony with fabulous lake views. There is a large bathroom with separate bath and shower, and an entirely separate WC.

The location is perfect, just as you enter the village, with plenty of free parking close to the hotel. A few minutes walk to any of the major sights in Sankt Wolfgang. Five minutes and you are in the meadows above the town, ten minutes any you are at Schafbergbahn and on the lovely road to Ried and more rolling lakeside meadows and quiet hotels and villas.

This is a family hotel and not a corporate one. So it has its quirks which you need to accept as its charm. In room 201, my bath took 45 minutes to fill, and my TV curiously limited to a handful of channels and a station promoting The White Horse Inn, a rival establishment. The TV in my sister's room next door appeared to be wholly different!

The restaurant we thought was rather good, but despite pre-booking, we were placed next to a door and found ourselves in a cold draught all evening. I awoke with a stiff neck. We thought the restaurant was more geared to the package trade who seemed to get the best tables.

I had trout with the muddy gills still in and some of the flesh brown with their contents. I am sure this is how the locals like them but I did not. I prefer my fish heads cleaned. On the other hand it was perfectly cooked.

The terrace is lovely and breakfasts are entirely adequate. For Western Europeans the presence of dogs (more than one!) amongst the tables is perhaps a little off putting and seeing our neighbour’s dog shake itself violently in front of the uncovered breakfast buffet did put us off rather. That said this is Austria and Austrians do allow dogs in restaurants. I make no bones about it (no pun intended) I regard this as unhygienic.Dogs also smell when wet which is not a smell I like when eating.

But when in Rome as it were…best just bring a bigger and better dog!

The hotel cat Moritz seemed undeterred by the canine guests and accepted admiration and attention with the usual dignified aloofness of a cat. He gently bit my sister’s hand, which she assured me was a sign of affection. We liked Moritz and he would certainly never shake himself over the breakfast table or lie sprawling under our feet getting in the way of the buffet. Cats are just so much more civilised!

The breakfast team are attentive, coffee came quickly, was good quality (strangely in Austria hotel coffee often isn’t and I always take my own filter papers and coffee! – unnecessary here) and we were offered more. The scrambled egg is Central European style not what Brits and Americans are used to, but none the worse for that – but it is somewhat parsimonious – some mornings just one egg – served in a tiny pan. But this was enough for me as there was so much more on offer, including fresh fruits and yoghurts, a good selection of meats always replenished, some delicious thinly sliced roast pork, and there are eggs to boil yourself. I was not very competent with that and the water did not seem to be boiling or bubbling when I used the boiler and ended up with a six minute semi-raw egg…but this was my incompetence – boiling an egg is not an easy task!

One afternoon we tried the terrace for ice cream and our Fruchtbechers were very disappointing, the fruit was just slices of under-ripe Marillen, the ice cream tasted mass-produced, and for this quality it was very overpriced. You can do better in the village. Yet… you have that wonderful view….so had I been staying longer I would have tried it again but asked the waitress to use fresh ripe fruit such as the excellent strawberries we had at breakfast.

There are package tourists and there is even a package tourist folder which says the hotel has Wifi throughout. It does not, only in the small lounge area. We had family issues in UK to handle and the absence of Wifi in bedrooms was an irritation and is unusual in Austria these days. I was in a simple private Pension a few miles away in Großgmain a week earlier and Wifi there was free and easy to access throughout the house.

One evening we returned to escape the rain and decided to make use of our lovely rooms. There were in any case no café staff left on site and the restaurant closes very early. Exploring the mini-bar was a disappointment as my sister is a small whisky drinker. There was none, no Vodka either. There was gin and then a few obscure cheap spirits (at high prices by Austrian standards – this is not usually a country where Mini bars rip you off) – not even a Williams or Marillenbrand. The next evening we tried what looked like a cocktail bar in the hotel complex next to the Apotheke. It was adequate but hardly enticing and you have to buy your own “nibbles” – peanuts for example – in a tin from a bizarre machine.

We were not exactly overwhelmed by service at The White Horse Inn the next evening but we did (eventually after dropping heavy hints) finally get a few nuts to nibble with our cocktails.

But this is not Monte Carlo and if it were I would not go here. St Wolfgang is beautiful. Afternoons are busy with package tourists and the boats can get uncomfortably cramped. So start early if you want to do a lake tour. Evenings when the mob goes, are quite wonderful. This stay was late July but December is marvellous as you can sip your Glühwein in the square and listen to the faint echo of Advent carols form the wonderful Church. Watch the lights on the lake and the electric swans! Or go for the air show..fearsome yet impressive. Or indeed be the only tourists at the spring festival concert in the school – in March / April. I think we were the only ones not wearing Trachten that evening!

There really is happiness ever in store at St Wolfgang and I would certainly prefer to stay at Hotel Peter than at those with famous names. Maybe one day I will write an operetta about Hotel Peter. Moritz the cat can see off the canine invaders as if they were Piefkes demanding to know why they got an apricot pancake when they clearly ordered a plate of ham (Palatschinken) and Franz Joseph can arrive on the paddle steamer – now still plying the lake – and demand not to stay at the Little White Horse…but with a higher better view…dein Herz das hast du verloren im Hotel Peter am See…
.
In conclusion, if you are staying in St Wolfgang, stay here. It’s the best. But accept its quirks. If we don’t then we won’t have family hotels left only the ghastly chains or those whose owners live elsewhere and know only the price of everything and not its value. Hotel Peter is good value – not perfect – more like a family gemütlich hotel which found itself turned into something more almost by accident. It is quite a happy accident. I love it. And I hope this balanced review which shows the good things and the less good will have a ring of authenticity about it... and in the end if we do not support family hotels we will all end up staying in international corporate hostels, or at pumped up mediocrity where hotels have to call themselves "resorts", "spas" or "boutiques".

Hotel Peter must have the best location in St Wolfgang, with all rooms overlooking the stunning views of the lake and surrounding hills. A typical Austrian interior, warm and welcoming. Frau Elser was a real star, friendly and very helpful. The hotel also has a restaurant for non residents, and we found that Thomson guests ate from a separate menu. It was 4 courses, with 2 choics for the 3rd course, the main meal, but no choices for the other 3, so if there was something you didn't like you would end up having less courses, so perhaps more choices neeeded. This said we couldn't fault the quality of food, it was first class. Breakfast was also very good.We stayed for 2 weeks in mid July and the weather was awful. The village is pretty, but takes all of 5 minutes to walk round, and at tea time the shops all close and there is absolutely nothing to do at night. We soon regretted the 2 week stay, take advice, 1 week is enough. Good walking if the weather permits. The cog railway is a must, breathtaking views from up top. If the sun does shine, we got 1 day, walk through the village past the mountain railway, ad where the road reduces to a single lane look for bright umbrellas on the left, BADESTRAND, a lovely lakeside sunbathing spot with 5 star facilites. You won't be disappointed. The village band plays for an hour Saturday and Wednesday evenings, they were really good. The lakes ferry service is brilliant, with the landing just below your balcony! Thank you Frau Elser and the Crystal reps. Oh and by the way, if you want a lie in take earplugs because at 7am every morning the village church bells go into overload, I'm sure it plays the best part of a symphony! All said, give Hotel Peter a try.

Room Tip: top floor, but all have lake views

We booked for 3 nights as part of an independant self drive tour of Austria. After a previous rather poor hotel in Zell Am See we were rather dubious about having booked another touristy cente. Our concerns were soon put to rest.
The hotel is situated right at the entrance of St Wolfgang - convenient but not in the crowded centre. Great free parking outside and the hotel just gives a very good first impression.
Parents of the owners on duty when we arrived and a lovely friendly couple. Room was a really pleasant surprise - large, well furnished, nice bathroom with super views of the lake. Most hotels would categorise rooms as a junior or mini suite.
Breakfast provided an excellent choice. Only criticism was service, as on a couple mornings difficult to get coffee etc as priority seemed to be clearing away tables.
We ate one night a la carte, which was Ok, one night elsewhere in the village (awful) and the final night as half board. Very good value with a comprehensive wine list starting at a very good value euros 20 - much, much less than other hotels we stayed at.
We had tried to book half board initially but request not actioned, one waitress said we could change, another then said we couldn't, owner then said we could and told waitress off in front of us! Do book half board in advance if you can by emailing hotel - well worth it.
A few minor observations - bit of noise at night - guests on neighbouring balcony drinking to 3.30 a.m. one night, nearby extrator fan a tiny bit intrusive and drunks in village kept us away another night. Owner/gentleman on reception a bit rude and off hand at times completely ignoring us on one occasion as we stood for several minutes whilst he chatted to an acquaintance.
An excellent hotel for basing yourself for both Wolgangsee and the wider Salzgammergut/Salburg area. Do book half board.

Room Tip: Would recomend 2nd or 3rd floor from our experience for best views.

The Hotel Peter lived up to our expectations from the Crystal Brochure. The room was lovely and had a balcony with a great view of the lake, making it a relaxing place to sit and enjoy the view after a busy siteseeing day. The food at the hotel was excellent with two choices of menu at dinner. We found the meal times great as dinner was served up to nine o'clock in the eveningand breakfast was served until eleven. No rush to come back from your day to get a shower and race down to dinner as we have previously had to do on other holidays. The staff were very helpful and dressed in traditional dress which was nice. We would definately recommend this Hotel and St Wolfgang also the Crystal reps were second to none. A holiday that we will always remember fondly.
