Stayed here with some friends last fall. We were in Anaconda for the "Big Game Opening Day" shopping day....formerly known as hunting widow shopping day. After a long day of shopping and walking around town, the Hickory House was a great place to relax and enjoy some down time. We played games in the main living room and had a very relaxing, fun evening. Mary Jane (i think that's the right name) came over and locked us in for the night around 11:00. The pumpkin pancakes were incredible the next morning and gave us a good start to another great day taking the Pintlar Scenic Route through Philipsburg and stopping at the Sweet Palace, the Sapphire Gallery and heading back home to Helena.

a girls night out to celebrate opening day of big game rifle season. We were accommodated with extra blankets from our cold evening of walks, comfy rooms and fun games. We borrowed the fridge for our snacks and beverages and enjoyed the company at breakfast and the pumpkin pancakes. At about $35 per person for the evening, it was well worth it!

We were on the road and found the Hickory House Inn on google places as beeing close. It was a last minute, one night stay, but i wish we could have stayed longer. We stayed in the Montana room and had an amazing room and bathroom! She really has the house set up nicely. The breakfast was wonderful and price was great for everything we got.

I would definitly recommend this B&B to anyone!

First off, let me say that the Hickory House Inn was a nice B&B. MaryJane was a good host. You will get your money's worth by staying there - assuming that the amounts charged are correct.
Next, be sure to see a movie at the historic Washoe Theater. First run movies at half the price and reasonable prices at the snack bar. 6 people's admission, popcorn, candy and drinks for under $50. Amazing.
That said, there is an interesting policy of PRE-CHARGING guests the full amount BEFORE arrival. We used a card that we watch very carefully and saw a charge come through before we even left home. I called and was told that they implemented the policy this year, to combat last minute cancellations. I can understand how hard it is to run a B&B with fickle guests who cancel at the last minute. However, I have never run into a place that charged me the full amount before I even leave home. By the way, this policy is nowhere to be found on the website or in the literature.
To top it off, we came home a week later and found another charge on our card for two additional people. The original charge covered our full party and Maryjane had just made a mistake.
Her mistake was not only the erroneous charge, but in not letting us know before she did both transactions.
The end result was two refunds on my credit card - one for a $10 discrepency between the web-posted rates and the original charge, and the second to refund the erroneous additional person charge. What a hassle - it ruined my memories of an otherwise great experience.
Advice to the owners: post your policies prominently and communicate with your guests, especially when you are messing around with their credit cards.

The Hickory House Inn bed and breakfast is a place rich in history…it’s located in the historical district of Anaconda, MT and was formally the parish house of St. Paul’s Church. The former Rectory has 4200 square feet that includes five guest quarters and some wonderfully spacious and comfortable common areas. The Hickory House was built in 1902 and had been a Rectory for most its life, until a female naval officer purchased the property and lived there by herself for some thirty years.

Most recently the home was purchased by Mary Jane and her husband George who restored the home to its natural state and converted the property into the B&B as we know it today. The restoration was a painstaking process as the entire house was donned in brown colors (probably making the former owner, the military officer, feel right at home) and had many modern changes that required undoing in order to get the home back to its rightful state.

Mary Jane had searched high and low, often using Ebay to acquire the vintage hardware and décor needed for the restoration. Today the home looks like it would have some 100 years ago and is a wonderful reminder of the period. The Hickory House is located right in the heart of downtown Anaconda and is walking distance to museums, galleries and restaurants. The accommodations are modest but comfortable. The wonderful proximity is also its nemesis in that traffic noise can be a bit loud, but usually dies down by late evening.

Breakfast at the Hickory House is home-cooked and served on fine china. One morning during my visit we had some of the best blueberry pancakes I’ve ever had, they were thin just like I like them! We also had some sort of sausage patty with an array of spices that provided a ying/yang affect with the pancakes. There was of course freshly ground coffee and orange juice.

Mary Jane is a wonderful host providing great insight, history and recommendations on the area. Mary Jane’s husband, George is a bank builder and has recently accepted a position that will require him to travel a good deal, so sadly they have put the Hickory House Inn up for sale. So, if you know anyone interested in becoming a B&B innkeeper, give them a call directly.

Okay, so we were on the motorcycle in the snow in early June. That's just wrong.

However, our saving grace was that we were headed to Anaconda, MT, to the Hickory House Inn B&B. Wet, tired, and more than a little frazzled after driving a bike through a blizzard that came out of nowhere, we showed up mid-day at the Hickory House. There was a note on the door that told us to come in and make ourselves at home, and Mary Jane (the owner) would meet us later when we were settled in. So, we entered.

First, the inn is LOVELY. It is located in an old Victorian house, which has very nice plantings in front and is well maintained. Mary Jane later told us she and her husband have been spending a lot fo time renovating the home, and it shows. We entered to soft classical music playing in the background. On the left is a media room with flat-screen TV (so much for authenticity, but as we really wanted to see the Weather Channel, we didn't mind!) This room is stocked with pretty yet comfortable furniture, and a library of DVDs and VHS tapes to watch, and some games. (Note: there were a lot of tapes for children, which we thought was pretty thoughtful for families travelling with young ones). We pretty much camped out there for the evening, as we felt so much as home (Note: we were the only ones in the inn that evening). On the right is another sitting room, for those who wish to read without being bothered by the TV.

Straight ahead is the dining room, where we were served breakfast (more about that later). Several rooms are located on the main floor, and others are upstairs. We reserved the Pintler Room, which had a terrificly comfortable king sized bed and nice linens. In addition to being nicely furnished with antiques, Mary Jane also provided a small TV for video-watching in our room. This room shares a bath and sitting room with another room, but the bath adjoins the room so you don't have to go out into the hall to use the bathroom, which is nice. We were told the bathroom was newly remodeled and is quite large and comfortable.

Although the inn is on the main street of Anaconda, the town seems to pretty much roll up the streets after 5 pm, which was fine with us. There are several restaurants within walking distance, or some within a short drive.

Mary Jane came to introduce herself and see how we were doing, and we had a nice chat. One of my pet peeves with some B& Bs is that the owner 'hovers', and you never get quite to feeling comfortable. This experience was NOT LIKE THAT, at all - Mary Jane was a charming hostess (she does not live on site but nearby), and helped us feel completely comfortable and relaxed in the inn.

Breakfast was outstanding, consisting of a fruit compote and a Greek frittata (yummy!) with bacon, juice and coffee/tea. We sat and chatted with Mary Jane, who has obviously put a lot of hard work into the inn, that really shows. Alas, we had to leave to get back to Bozeman, return the bike to Yellowstone H-D, and catch our flight back to Wisconsin. Our stay at this inn was a terrific way to end our vacation. Anaconda is fairly close to Fairmont Hot Springs, so if you are looking to go to the springs but not stay there, this might be a good option to consider. (and the price was extremely reasonable). Also, families who are travelling together might find this a good option, as the entire house can be rented (per Mary Jane) - it has a really cozy feel. This is short drive to the Yellowstone area, and we weren't so interested in staying in chain hotels/motels.
