Since I was 9 years old, I have been climbing Mt. Major. It's an easy enough climb for young and old alike. I now am on Medicare and still look forward to that gorgeous panorama at the top!

We recently visited the Alton Bay Area. Its so beautiful up there and we saw alot of cars parked along the road at the bottom of Mount Major. We decided to hike it. It has two trails that end up combining. The yellow trail takes more time but loops around and is not as steep as compared to the blue trail which is steeper though is shorter and more rocky. The two trails converge along the way. We took the yellow trail since we didnt know what to expect. Was somewhat rocky and has some little brooks to climb over so wear hiking boots (waterproof). Also bring water and dress appropriately for we had jeans on and it was warm so more breathable clothing makes for comfort (hiking shorts or pants). It seemed like awhile to get to the top but it was worth it. People also brought younger kids and dogs so if they could make we could.............Took the blue trail down which was steeper and alot of rock but shorter and it wasnt so bad. Took about 3 hours roundtrip.

I must admit the 4 mile hike up the mountain is very rocky and steep in places. The pay off at the top is well worth it! The panoramic view of Lake Winnipesaukee is breathtaking and spectacular. My advice would be to wear loose fitting clothing that won't bind your legs as you'll be doing some real stretching scaling the rocks and ledges. Also make sure you have proper footwear, ideally shoes with good traction and ankle support. We hiked up the blue trail ( main trail ) and hiked down the orange trail. We made the mistake of thinking the orange would be less steep. I don't know if the trails are maintained at all but it seems like they have been overtaken by rock slides so they have become quite treacherous. Just be aware that the orange trail back down was extremely steep and rocky.
