We visited Maruba while on a Mayan temple tour. We had arranged ahead of time for massages and lunch. While the massages were wonderful, and the food was good, the food service was horrible. We were presented with 3 separate bills - 1 for 1 massage, another for another massage and the food bill. Then, the waitress came back and said that we had to pay for the drinks with CASH. We questioned this (not once but twice), and the waitress shrugged and said "that's just the way it is." We had only brought so much with us and had to dig for our last bit of cash to pay for it. Later, when we reported it to our hotel (who arranged all and was totally surprised by this), our hotel was told nothing other that they had "closed the ticket". Well, we were right there, and another ticket (the 4th one!) could just as well have been made. I was quite disappointed by this, having had good experiences previously. But needless to say, this incident left us all with a bad experience, and wondering about the "cash" request as well, because of it. So, be forewarned! Also, the facilities, pools, jacuzzis all seemed a trifle run down and worn. Looks like whoever is in charge really doesn't care.

I wrote to the manager before this review, hoping to have a meeting of the minds, to no avail.

The issues were not language or even culture, but feeling gouged and misled. There were several issues related to trips, costs and timing.

We went to this part of Belize, primarily to got to Crooked Tree Reserve, a renowned Bird refuge. the manager said she could not organize the trip when we wanted to go because other people traveling with us wanted to go at a different time. The other people were going to crooked tree, too and did not care about the time. i mind missing out on seeing the birds early in the morning or late in the evening. There are two other issues like this, but i don't want to use the space.

Breakfast was decent but the rest of the food was disappointing because it was poorly prepared and very expensive. The buildings are so strange. ours was painted silver and the porches are gold. I just didn't get it.

i did have the best massage ever and had 2 in 3 days.

Although, Maruba is tucked away in a secluded part of the country, spending a night or two is definitely worth it. My bf and I stayed for 3 nights/4 days and really enjoyed being pampered by the staff, relaxing by the pool, and going on private tours by one of their very knowledgeable guides. Yes, the resort is located in a desolate part of town but that’s the best part of it – away from all the tourist sites! And yes, it is not a place for budget travelers. However, the food is great and the locals are extremely friendly! Fresh juices, bread, and banana jam for breakfast and wild game and fresh seafood for dinner. The menu is extensive so you never get bored. During our stay, we frequented their spa (HIGHLY recommend the Mood mud message!), visited Altun Ha, rode horses through the jungle, and went cave tubing at Caves Branch. The resort will make all trip accommodations, and if you’re lucky, you may even have your own private tour, like my bf and I did.

Our Jr Suite was bigger (and nicer) than my nyc apartment :) it consisted of a large, decorative, canopy bed, a separate sitting room and hot tub, a couple of couches, tv – pure luxury in the middle of the jungle. Oh and can’t forget to mention the fresh picked hibiscus flowers everywhere! They really do a great job maintaining the property and making sure that their guests are comfortable. We would recommend this place to anyone who really wants to get away from “it all” and be treated like a king/queen!

My husband and I got married on Ambergris Caye and then booked a honeymoon package at Maruba for after the wedding. We were very sad to leave AC, but that didn't last long when we arrived at Maruba. Let me preface all comments by saying we are a couple in our late 20s/early 30s from the east coast.

Our package was very easy to book by e-mail with Melanie and our transfers were arranged. We were picked up from our pier on AC by Nikki and had a 1 hour boat ride plus 10 minute car ride to the resort. We arrived and sat down in the lounge and had to take it all in for a minute. Maruba is an incredible sight for the eyes. Almost instantly, Jerry placed rum punches in our hand, served in coconut cups and garnished with hibiscus and palm spikes. In fact everything is garnished and decorated with hibiscus at Maruba. Melanie gave us a tour of the grounds and I'm sure our jaws were dropped to the floor as we took it all in. They had upgraded us to the fertility suite, which contained bedroom, bathroom, and jacuzzi room. There was a refrigerator stocked with drinks, as well as a bottle of champagne to greet us. Incense was burning in the room. It really was the most romantic setting you could possible imagine. We liked the decor so much in our suite that my husband wants to decorate one of our rooms in the house like it.

The food was excellent in the restaurant. We dined all 3 meals every day there and did not try a single thing we did not love. We even tried the water buffalo! My husband doesn't usually eat fruit or vegetables unless forced, but he willing ate some at Maruba. My husband also loved the music they played in the lounge area (he is a house music DJ) and Nikki was nice enough to give him some mix CDs. They also put CDs in our suite to set the mood.

We went on tours with Oscar and Super Mario to Lamanai and Altun Ha. They were excellent tour guides. We also had aromatherapy massages, Mood Mud massages, a facial, and a pedicure, which we needed badly after climbing to the top of these ruins. The spa is in a very relaxing setting and the services we received were top notch (take it from an experienced spa-goer).

On the grounds of Maruba, we played chess on the giant chess table they have. We soaked in the Japanese mineral bath. We relaxed by the private resort pool too. I cannot describe how beautiful the grounds are. Total, we suffered only 5 bug bites. There was complementary all-natural bug repellent in the suite, and it worked better then any Deet-compound I ever used. We saw a great deal of wildlife just walking to and from our suite.

In general, Maruba is an experience for the senses like none other. The staff and owners made us feel at home at all times. The atmosphere was fabulous for setting the mood for our honeymoon. It is obvious that a great amount of care is taken in maintaining the grounds and making sure each guest has the best possible experience. We are so happy we chose Maruba and will absolutely stay there again on our next adventure to Belize!

We travel the world and there are few places like Maruba. To say it's different is an understatement! We first visited in June '99 for an anniversary trip and fell in love with the place. Went back for our fifth time in June '07.Hard to explain but you have to experience it. If you like getting romantic in seclusion this is the place for you. Just remember you are in the jungle with the most gracious hosts possible. If you're looking for a big Hyatt or Hilton Hotel experience - this is the opposite. Often times there are just a few other people at the resort which makes it so special. I'd like to keep Maruba a secret which is why we hesitated to write but in the end we felt compelled to do it justice. Looking forward to going back soon!!

We stayed at Maruba for three days, in a Jungle Suite. The peace and tranquility was shattered by constant music blaring from the front lobby all day long.

When ordering dinner, there was no menu to review. If you're on a budget WATCH OUT; the wait staff have memorized menu along with the prices, so you cannot discreetly pick and chose items that help you stay on a tight budget. You have to ask the price for everything, which is very embarrassing. If you want a really good meal go up the street to the ORIGINAL ROCK, where Rose and her family serves great homemade food and drinks for an awesome price; she will even let you chill to watch her big TV . Make sure you try Rose's roasted GIBNUT or her fried chicken. Rose's food is so delicious that you will want to ask her for seconds.

The Maruba has been around for a long time, and its age reflects on the condition of the property. There's a lot of maintenance issues that needed to be addressed. We were terrified to use our shower, because it emitted water that smelled like rotten eggs; we took bird baths everyday. The cleanliness of the bed linen made us cringe, so we slept completely covered in our clothes. If you plan to sleep in the nude, make sure you pack a mosquito net or you will have at least 50 - 100 bites in a short time. The locals say that if you drink anise tea everyday for a month that the tea will make your blood bitter and it will repeal mosquitoes.

On a positive note, the spa treatments were sheer perfection especially the mood mud treatment. Being covered in mud makes for a great photo op too. If you get a massage ask for Jose he does and outstanding job. The Japanese hot tub and cave tubbing tour was awesome as well. Avoid the jungle medicinal tour or the mosquitoes will eat you alive.

This is my ideal hotel. A little rustic, off the beaten path, but plenty of creature comforts and character. Warning: there were several representations of male genitalia and so forth (i.e. wood carvings) so this place is not for the prudish!

The room was adorable, kitchy. My husband thought it was a bit much so it's probably a matter of taste.

The food was AMAZING! Grilled tilapia - yum! Rum punch to die for.

Cute leopard print fabrics, incense burning, wonderful ambiance.

Right in the middle of the jungle but with all the creature comforts. They have a spa - hubby had a message, said it was great.

Visit the Mayan site Altun Ha while you're there.

Warning: the road to get there is really bad. If you're driving a rental car, make sure you have a spare tire! If you're not comfortable off-roading (that's what it feels like) arrange airport transfers.
