“need to compare before booking a room”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 August 2013

I paid 66 us$ for a small room of 8 m² with no lake view the first night when I've just arrived for the very first time in Copacabana. I'll go back this wonderful place but ... no more Hotel Gloria for me in my life. They told me that It was national day and almost impossible to find a room in the whole town. But I found rooms easily the day later with lake view and much bigger and cheaper.

Room Tip: Need to see the room before booking !!!

We stayed one night in July 2013. The view of the lake from our third floor rooms (kids had one room, we had the other) was wonderful. The rooms were large and the beds comfortable. The common room on the main floor has large floor to ceiling windows facing the lake. We were on the third floor and used the games room a lot. Our twelve year old son loved the pool table, foosball, and ping pong table.

Breakfast was decent, with the usual assortment of meat, cheese, yogurt, toast.

Had dinner there twice and enjoyed those meals as well.

They turn the hot water off during the daytime hours. Tried to shower in the morning, but the water would push the shower curtain out of the shower stall and soak the floor so we waited until we arrived in La Paz later that morning.
Floors creaked so much I felt bad for the people below us when getting up in the night for a drink of water etc.

The place has charm, however, the one thing I really could not stand and would prevent me from going back is the oil heaters in the rooms. They filled the hallways and the rooms with the smell of burning oil. I had to turn mine off during the night as it gave me the feeling of being unable to breathe.

It is suppose to be the second best hotel in Copacabana. It is old and they do a good job keeping it clean, but it is showing it's age.

Room Tip: There are no elevators. Floors creak badly so if you don't mind the stairs take a third floor r...

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Gloria Copacabana, Bolivia for one night during our 21 day stay in Bolivia. Overall it is not a bad hotel. It seemed very clean (nothing to report that concerned us with regard to cleanliness), no sign of bed bugs in our bed (after a bad experience in Mexico, we now check for this EVERYWHERE.... don't take bed bugs lightly, their bites will SCAR your body for life). The breakfast in the hotel restaurant was fairly typical of Bolivia, but quite good and the service was good as well. We also had an AWESOME lake view from our room. Highly recommended!! You have to ask for it on your reservation, as those rooms go first.

So, to summarize:

The Good:
-Not expensive (by U.S. standards), but perhaps pricey by Bolivian standards for the level of accommodation provided.
-Clean, spacious rooms. Ours had two beds, even though we only needed one, and the bed was actually fairly comfortable.
-Useful (but not elaborate) game area on the 3rd floor (pool tables, ping pong, foosball)
-Close walk to the main areas of Copacabana, including the markets and tiendas, which was nice.
-Good breakfast included... included breads (typical), scrambled eggs, coffee, hot water, hot milk, regular tea bags, mate tea bags (including coca for those suffering from altitude sickness), and available for purchase are bottled water and sodas (nobody gives free, potable water in Bolivia, as we are accustomed to in the U.S.)

The Bad:
-Aging building that could use some modernizing.
-I fail to understand why an area that stays cold most of the year doesn't have central, thermostat-controlled heat. It's 2013. I don't care if it's South America or not, install central heat! However, the electric radiator in the room did work well, but it made the air insanely dry and the temperature in the room and bathroom are highly inconsistent. Maybe this is an American expectation, but I'm accustomed to an interior space never varying more than about 8 to 10 degrees F during any season of the year.
-This hotel is slightly farther from the main areas than some others. I have heard (no first hand experience) that Hotel Rosario is the best in town and the prices are similar. Our host wanted us to stay there, but it was booked full. That tells me to check out Hotel Rosario first, but Hotel Gloria is a good second choice.
-NO ELEVATOR at all. If you are elderly, disabled or simply suffering from altitude sickness, you will find this highly inconvenient. I find there to be a distinct lack of elevators in Bolivia, so this is probably not atypical.

Overall, I would say it was average. By U.S. standards, your accommodations are similar to that of a newer/updated Super 8 or an older, more worn Best Western. However, I appreciated the cleanliness and conveniences and the nice breakfast.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view room when you make your reservation!!

Previous reviews mention Hotel Gloria being like a hospital, which is mainly due to wall colours. The hotel is ageing and we felt like we were in a time warp-and that is what made our stay enjoyable. Our room was large with big, double-glazed windows that let in lots of light, kept the freezing night air out, gave great views of Lake Titicaca and ensured a quiet night's sleep (we never once heard the disco booming from the centre of town through the night unless we went outside). The bed was very comfortable, big, had crisp white sheets with good pillows.

Old floorboards in our room creaked softly as we walked around and we felt like we were on a boat, which again added to the charm of our stay. The bathroom is adequately, as are the towels. Staff were friendly and made every effort to help us, despite our limited Spanish. The WiFi is adequate to good in the common areas, depending on how many guests are trying to use it :) Room rates were reasonable for what you got.

Also, the day we checked out we were meant to go on a tour of Isla de Sol but it got cancelled due to choppy seas. The hotel staff were great and let us leave our bags at Reception, use their spacious common area facing the Lake and come and go throughout the day. Thank you Hotel Gloria.

On the minus side, Hot water was on only in certain hours, the fittings and bathroom were a little dated and their WIFI would only work in their lounge not in the room
On the plus side, our room had a great view of the lake, the bed was comfortable and we had quality sleep and the staff were very friendly.
We had 2 meals at their restaurant, one was superb, however the next one not as good.
Their breakfast was basic and not too many choices

If you compare this to the hotel Rosario which comes in at the same price there is no contest, this place is really way to much for a run down hotel. The room we were given had mattresses passed there sell by date and the towels provided had holes in it, come on how much do new towels cost.
Would not stay here again, better value elsewhere, stay at the Rosario which is the same chain as the one in La Paz unfortunately for us it was sold out for us.

We stayed here one night after a visit to the island of the Sun. Our room had a living room and separate bedroom with a king sized bed. The bathroom was small and a shower only. The hotel is very old, but very nicely kept. When you check out you have to return the remote control and key…..be careful not to forget. Very reasonably priced at $70 per night. The breakfast room had the most amazing window view of the lake. Breathtaking!
