Senyati Safari Camp
Reviewed 16 August 2014

Just returned from 4 weeks Botswana and Namibia and can honestly say the place that remains in my memory most is Senyati. Firstly, a big thanks to Lulu who was a fantastic host-funny, entertaining and incredibly kind. We stayed 4 nights in chalet number 2, which must have one of the best views in the whole of Southern Africa- the sight of so many elephants just metres away at the waterhole was unbelievable. The camp is ideally situated for Chobe and it was great to come back in the late afternoon, sit on the terrace and watch the spectacle of so many elephants coming to drink. Lulu organised a fantastic boat trip for us into Chobe-certainly recommended. The chalet was perfect, had everything you needed, was spotlessly clean and cleaned every day to a very high standard. We do hope to come back again some day, it's a special place and hope that it remains so.
Once again thanks Lulu for your hospitality.

This year our plan was to spend a few days in Botswana with my family and friends in Chobe area, and we were looking for a nice campsite, as much in the bush as possible. Senyati was clearly a good decision, and the campsite # 16 was just perfect for us. Why? Because the campsite was spacious for our tents and cars, we had privacy as it was in the far end of the camp and we had enough privacy, the campsite is unfenced, so we could enjoy the visit of the elephants, the ablution and kitchen area gave us enough comfort without compromising too much the 'bush feeling', we received good quality firewood so could make our hot water for shower, as well as enjoyed every night the campfire and could make perfect braai. The waterhole attracted the elephants so we enjoyed every day the close view of the drinking, playing elephants as well as the visiting baboons, hyena(s) and jackals. The owners and the staff were very helpful and friendly, we received perfect service from the first until the last minute. The campsite is about 20 - 25 minutes drive to the Chobe NP gate, but it was easily manageable, and actually we could continue the game drive leaving or coming back, very close meeting with the visiting elephants on the way to the camp. I highly recommend this campsite, and if possible we also would like to come back soon.

We were a party of 4 guys in 2 vehicles doing a 2 week round trip through Botswana staying a few nights at Khama, Kubu Island, Chobe (Senyati), Linyanti and Moremi ( Kaziikini) and Senyati was by far the best overall. Each campsite has its own ablution block with power and kitchen / washing up area. The "donkey" provided as much hot water as 4 guys needed for showers, washing up etc. having a laundry service available was also a big plus. The elephant dug out at the waterhole gave us some excellent photo opportunities and it's special to see these animals really close. Senyati is within easy reach of Kasane and Chobe. The people are so accommodating and are able to book tiger fishing, game viewing cruises etc. definitely the best camp in Botswana.

Room Tip: Some campsites have more room than others so if you are going to be there for a few nights and have...

We camped for two nights, and stayed in chalet nr 2 for one night. This was amazing. We had a braai and about 100 or more elephants passed right behind us to the waterhole. Lulu and Louw were very accomodating to us. Free wood was delivered every evening even though we had our own. I can highly recommend this place. There is 2x4 access on a different road as a couple made use of it. Special place!

Senyati is a fantastic camp! The owners LuLu and Louw are tremendous hosts. They couldn't have been any nicer to us! They answered any questions we had. They made us feel like family, as we were invited to eat nightly with them! Lulu took us for a beautiful day trip/brai in Chobe National Park! The accomadations were better than expected , so much so that we stayed there for a week! The elephants at the watering hole were extremely close to give us an experience that we will never forget! I truly believe this is the only place to stay in the Kasane area and you will not be disappointed if you stay at Senyati!

It was wonderful having you guys here. So nice to see that people from America appreciate Africa so much. You might just have to abandon the Wild West to move to Africa! Come back soon! Next time I will make sure to have Mrs Leopard and her baby tied up at Serondala when you come. She will be waiting for you.

The service was awefull. All the bad reviews about the reception staff was our experience as well. We had a huge argument about where they wanted to place us, and they even offred to give us our deposit back to get rid of us. where would you go if all the places are booked months in advance. NO way, is any of the people in our party going back there.
The fact that Elephants comes to drink here, doesnt make up for the bad service. Sveral times we sat in the bar erea and nobody even came to serve us, and then we would be like 10 or more people. If they come, they hurry us up, and leave again.
They advertise not only elephants, but other wildlife as well. But there was only elephants, and baboons. and we stayed for 4 nights. Dont believe that you access the place by 2X4....

From the Senyati side we would like to put a few points in perspective. Senyati welcomes animal lovers and people who want to experience nature at its best. It is normal practice when people are dictating and demanding that we move other campers for them that we offer ALL THEIR MONEY BACK and ask them to go somewhere else. You chose to stay.

We do not promote ourselves for our bar service. For the majority of people the view from the bar and the animals are the main attraction and not the bar---the bar is a secondary factor with animal watching the main aim. There is a HUGE sign up on the bar counter that asks you to ring the bell for service.

Senyati does have many other wildlife coming to the waterhole too, however we promote ourselves by calling us an elephant waterhole. We have never promoted us as a waterhole for anything else than mainly elephant. Nature itselfs determines which animals will visit the waterhole on a particular night and we have never guaranteed certain animals at certain times.

Secondly, our website clearly states the directions for the 2x4 road. If you followed those directions closely, then you would have found us easily. There is also a post up at our gate that clearly states the directions for the alternative road and it clearly states that the road leading from the big Senyati sign is not suitable for 2x4 cars.

There are NO ROAD SIGNS IN LESOMA, as this is merely a village, but we measured the road by indicators and distance and 99% of the people find us easily with the 2x4 road. Senyati believes that Senyati is not suitable for visitors such as yourself.

I read some of the negative reviews, combined with the fact that we don't travel with a car I was pretty hesitant to make the booking. In the end I didn't need to be, Senyati proved to be one of the nature experiences for my family's 2½ week trip through southern Africa.

I think part of our brilliant experience come from staying in one of the chalets (as we do not carry camping equipment). We had a huge chalets with 2 bedrooms and kitchen to ourselves and enjoyed a great 2 nights stay with animal sightings that included elephants, monkeys and giraffes. When I'm designing a holiday I'm looking for something unique, something you don't get at home and we certainly got that at Senyati.

Do expect:
Elephants, a mini-herd of them which were most active during our stay in the late evenings, you can get up close and almost personal with them in the bunker by the waterhole
A decent wifi that works fine in reading news and updating emails, don't try too many pics or videos on it though or you'll be frustrated

Don't expect:
Easy access to food or town, we arranged transport through the local guide at Armbush safari and it worked really well, cheaper than arranging transport through Senyati. Do remember to do all your shopping in Kasane beforehand
Television, unfortunately we missed the world cup semi-finals due to lack of tv (including that 7-1 spanking of Brazil by Germany), luckily we could at least get scoreline updates through the wifi. I understand that it's a nature camp but one tv somewhere wouldn't hurt for the sport lovers among us

Room Tip: As a family of 4 adults we shared a large double twin chalet, its huge and could sleep 6 or even 8...
