“Mixed review of the Empire Inn”
Reviewed 22 January 2013

Well we stayed here for a night because Showboat would only give us one night. :(
No problem, its close to the casinos, and cheap. We paid $26 plus tax. Do you know what you get for $26?
This place!
Check in was ridiculous. The clerk tried to charge us, and we had already prepaid at hotels.com. Then upon closer look at the bill, it was someone elses!
Ok, the room. We were on the second floor right next to the maids closet, which was noisy in the early morning hours. The water pressure was literaly a tricle. So if you dont mind showering in slow motion, this place is for you. The bed was fairly comfortable, but the pillows were flat as pancakes, and the beadspread was just plain GROSS.
TV remote only worked the channels, so to adust volume or shut off TV you had to get out of the bed. Towels were very scratchy, but room was suprisingly clean. Had a lil fridge and microwave.
Continental breakfast is code for bad coffee with powered milk and a stale donut. (no joke) Crossing this place off my backup list for sure. Like I said.....$26.

I couldn't believe it! It was just awful. I booked it through Expedia at a very good rate. But when inside, the walls were filthy. The lighting in the bathroom was almost non existent. One of the lightbulbs was completely out. The door had been kicked in and the wood was missing by the door chain. I wouldn't send my worst enemy here! We left after about a half hour because it was so awful. Filthy fingerprints on bathroom door and front door. We were going to stay three nights. We got charged for one. But we're supposed to be refunded for the other two. I've never been to such an awful place. And the front facade is very deceiving. Don't let it fool you. Once inside, you'll see what I mean.

I stupidly glanced at Expedia's ranking when booking this hotel (4 out of 5!). I should have known something was amiss the instant I arrived.

Upon arrival, I was behind a trio of ladies checking inn. The women were blabbing on and on and on to the clerk. I understand being polite, but when someone else is waiting in line for *15 minutes*, you cut the conversation short to help them out. When the women finally left, I pulled up to the desk, where the process literally took between 10 to 15 minutes. The man to answer the phone and have a long, drawn-out argument with someone who was upset about being placed in a non-smoking room while I stood their awkwardly.

The room itself was *bad*. The bathroom light wouldn't stay on, the beds were rock hard and thin pillows. The walls were covered in bizarre stains and the bathroom was grimey with small sections of wall crumbling. As an added bonus, we could hear the constant thump of feet above our bed the entire night.

All for the low, low price of $169....plus $30 for a pet fee. Do yourself a favor...skip this one.

I booked their reservation line. We were going to a concert in A.C. Price was cheap. In hindsightu get what u pay for. Where to begin. Checking time was 2pm. We got there around 2:30 and was told the room wasn't ready. The area was recovering from a severe storm the weekend before. There was no phone service and the computers were down. The manager/owner couldn't find reservation. He was somewhat disorganized. Check-in took around 30 mins. At which point our room was ready. It was upstairs next to the supply room. Needless to say heard every time someone went in. Room seemed clean no smell. Bathroom ok too except Saturday really low water pressure and Sunday only a trickle of water. We were unable to take a shower . Saturday the continental breakfast was watered down on weak coffee and chocolate donuts and little Danishes. No fruit, cereal or young art. The pool water was cloudy and the filter was off. No umbrellas just 2 lounge airs.and u had touse bathroom towels. Went back torso at 11:00 the housekeeping cart was about 4 doors down from us. At 4:00 pm the maid came. Really 5 hrs to do 4 rooms. We asked for clean towels E didn't even offer to empty the garbage. The refrig had water collecting in a tray in refrig and anything on the top shelf froze. On couldn't take a shower but the 2towels were stained and full of holes. When we checked out I took the towels to the officer d told the manager everything. He blamed housekeeping and getting good help and told me that the water pressure is always like that in the summer. Really I would think if all these hotel/motels along the strip had this problem they wouldn't be in business. I booked this same place for 3 days in Sept. before we went this time. I deFinitly will cancel and never go back.

We stayed here for 3 night for a total of a little over $100. It was ok. I didn't expect much for the price and that is what we got. The room looked just like the pictures from people who stayed there. It worked for us, but if you are looking for anything more than a place to lay your head at night, keep looking.

I have to admit, I was a little wary of staying at a random inn that is not on the strip on Atlantic City, but we were only staying for one night for a bday party and paying $350 a night for a room at the Tropicana just seems like such a ripoff. My husband and I agreed that if we get bad vibes from the inn, we will forego the $70 booking fee and suck up the cost of rebooking at a name brand hotel. With that in mind, we drove from NYC to Empire Inn with some trepidation.

Boy, were we surprised!! Coming off the highway and driving for about 15 minutes to reach Empire Inn, we thought what a nice boulevard. It was lined with budget, mid-range hotels from Ramada Inn, Holiday Inn, really nice mom-and-pop inns on one side and clean rows of eateries and shops on the other side. It was well lighted, well maintained and not shady at all! We drove into the parking lot/front area of the Empire Inn and checked in with the general manager who seems to be the owner. If he is not the owner, then he is a very good employee.

The owner/manager granted our request for a smoke-free room. The lobby was small but neat and clean. There was a vending machine for snacks and laundry detergent, and a tray of breakfast (which was empty at the time we were there because it was already 5p), but everything was very neat and well-cared for.

We went to our room upstairs and it was a large room, with a dresser with a large mirror, a desk, a 2-person seating area and a kingsize bed. The bathroom had plenty of towels neatly arranged on top of the shelf, the toilet, sink and shower were all spotless. The rug was dark colored but seems clean enough. The bed was comfortable and the sheets were spotless.

Pets are allowed because our neighbor had a dog that kept on howling in the middle of the night. Thankfully, we arrived to the inn late after spending the night at the Tropicana's club, and the owners of the dog arrived shortly after us at which point, the dog stopped howling. We complained to the manager (same manager at 5 am as he was at 5 pm) and he was super apologetic and accomodating as much as he can, considering the owners of the dog was nowhere to be found. The manager said over and over again that he asked the owners to bring the dog out with them.

We were not sure what time was checkout but we left the inn the next morning at 11:30 am and we didn't receive a wakeup call or a reminder to leave. We bumped into the manager on the way out and we expressed our appreciation of his establishment and he was beaming with pleasure. It felt great to be able to provide such feedback to him.

As a comparison, our cousins stayed at the Knights Inn, which was down the road and closer to Atlantic City's casinos. Note that the closer you get to Atlantic City on this White Horse Pike road, the shadier it gets because even though on one side, you still see a row of inns (albeit more spacely apart with brushes in between inns), the other side is no longer a row of stores/restaurants, but either the water or bushes. This makes for a rather dark, ominous feel. We were very glad to have chosen Empire Inn.

We didn't sample the stores across Empire Inn but there were Five Guys burger joint across the street that had we had more time (and not hungover the next morning), we probably would have visited.

Lastly, taxis from Empire Inn to Atlantic City, one way, is $30-$40, depending on the cabdriver. We had to call ahead for service from the Inn and waited for 20 min for the taxi. We waited in our room and the taxi driver called our room from the lobby. It was worth the expense because we didn't have to worry about a designated driver. The drive itself is about 15 minutes to the casinos.
