“Great hotel, but ask for room upstairs”
Reviewed 17 April 2010

A very very nice place with excellent staff. However, ask specifically to get a room upstairs, or at least NOT room 5 or 6. Those two are downstairs and full viewing access. We got room 6, the worst in the hotel (they only got like 14 rooms) and immediatly asked to switch. Despite being fully booked we got to change room to an upstairs one the second night. If i had my choice, i would go for room 9-12.

Only thing to point out is that the wireless internet connection is quite slow unless you sit in the restaurant/reception area. THey also have desktops which work perfectly.

Remember also that this hotel is a little drive outside of the main town, although that doesnt really matter.

The prompt replies to my emails enquiring about accommodation at Pavillion d'Orient set the standard for our stay at this lovely small hotel. It is situated a little out of town, away from the hustle and bustle, but with a tuk tuk driver at your disposal from sunrise to about 10pm that is not a problem.
The rooms are well appointed with airconditioning, but the fans are a little noisy. Bathrooms have all that you need and are serviced daily. The breakfasts are plentiful and the evening meals lovely.
The pool was a refreshing spot at the end of the day and because it is a small hotel, it was never crowded.
The staff were all very helpful and suggested places to have lunch in town. There is internet access if you require, free of charge.
The tuk tuk drivers we used had limited English but sufficient to take us to the sights that we needed to see.
Make sure that you do the sunset sight - this is a hidden surprise and well worth the climb!

Myself and travelling partner stayed at this hotel for 5 days at the end of March. We were thoroughly impressed by the hotel, the services offered and the staff. It was a nearly faultless stay and we enjoyed it immensely. Sebastien and his staff are masters at hospitality.

Our free airport transfer was waiting for us and we were quickly taken to the hotel. The driver spoke English, and explained things enroute.

Reception is just inside the establishments walls (security gaurd at night), although covered, is an open style. Fans are situated and turned on as soon as you arrive, and the staff are very welcoming. Check-in isn't super fast, only because reception explains everything on offer/inclusive at the hotel.

Our room was clean, spacious and on the second floor with a private balcony (with comfy chairs and a table - and mosquito coils for preventative measures) overlooking a scenic garden and wonderful pool with a man made waterfall. The room was well equipped (TV, A/C, minibar etc.), everything was in perfect working order (WiFi inclusive) and beds were of a good standard and made for a comfortable night's sleep. The bathroom was clean and had a seperate bath and shower. The shower had a choice of shower heads (refer to images) but didn't have a shower curtain/screen, which did allow some water to escape the showering area. However, the drainage in the shower, at the edge (pebbled entrance - see images) and within the bathroom floor worked well allowing any build up of water to drain quickly. A pull out clothes line was also included and functioned well.

The in-house restaurant is of a similar style to reception, "open-style" with an adjacent pond including mood lighting. The menu was good with several choices (Western and Khmer), and quality of food was good. Service was prompt and very, good and to ensure minimalising of errors the staff repeat your order back. Mosquito coils are also used underneath the tables, again for preventative measures. (We didn't get attacked anytime.) Breakfast is OK with the basics, so don't expect a lavish buffet. This is probably the only thing that could be improved upon.

The spa and massage centre is good/atmospheric and conducted professionally with well trained massueses and is relatively cheap - book early or else you will have to get one in your room (this is OK too, as I booked late one day and the centre was fully reserved.) This is a professional service, so nothing but a massage is undertaken - no "dodgey" happy endings here!

The salt water pool is a decent size and is very well maintained. Sunbeds surround the poolside area and towels are provided. However, the water isn't really cold and may even seem warm during the day - this is an advantage at night. Our night swim was quiet and thoroughly relaxing. If you pay attention you can even see a few harmless bats flying around eating insects etc. (Don't be afraid as they do not bother you....you are the last thing they are interested in!) Mood lighting within the garden enhances the ambience and the waterfall only runs during the daytime.

The building's architecture is from the colonial French time and adds to the boutique feel. It's not a 5 star international chain, which adds to it's charm and hospitality. There is a tuk-tuk available from sunrise to sunset without charge (and for a nominal fee can be used outside of these hours, by prior arrangement). A car with driver can also be booked, for a fair fee.

Tours are also available and are conducted by trained guides - English or French and maybe more languages? We undertook two, day tours with Pavilion D'Orient and our guide was well spoken, educated, informative and attentive to our needs. The driver was safe and was quick to offer cold water upon return to the vehicle.

A few things to note;
Gecko's run rampant throughout the entire premises and even a few get into the rooms. Please don't think is a bad thing, they help keep the insects at bay and they are quick to run away from you as soon as you get near - they are harmless.
The doors to the room are wooden and some have cracks which have been sealed by silicone (privacy remains unchanged) and the locks are not modern, but function well.
There isn't an elevator, but as there is only one floor the stairs suffice, and porters will help with any luggage.
There are two free connected PC's adjacent to reception, however one was inoperable which meant congestion for guests wishing to use this service - WiFi is available throughout if you have a laptop/notebook and I experienced seldom drop outs.

Overall, if you like the 5 star international resorts (eg Sokha) then this might not be perfect for you. However, if you wish to have a change then this is PERFECT. (NB: I usually prefer the expensive chains, but welcomed this change.)

Thoroughly enjoyable stay and I would recommend anyone (from singles to families) to give this hotel a try - you will be pleasantly surprised and will feel very welcomed.

Finally, immense praise to Sebastien and his staff. We will return again and will use this hotel without any other considerations.

I can't say enough about this place. It's been a year and I still talk about it.
The room was clean and kept up nicely, my wife got massages every day we were there and she loved it. We also got our Tuk Tuk driver through them and he was amazing. The best. He took us pretty much anywhere, was so nice and courteous and kept us away from people trying to suck us in on a sales pitch. I know some drivers get a kick back for taking people places to get sold to. Anyways. If you get a chance, his name is Sey (pronounced "sigh"). Request him as yours. We were paired with him through the hotel. This is the most valuable advice I can give you. Seriously, a good driver makes all the difference. # is 85512917528
Plus tip him well. He won't ask for it, but he definitely deserves it.
The hotel is awesome, especially if you're looking for a cool little spot with great service and helpful staff. The manager is totally great as well.

The Pavillon is in the outskirts of Siem Reap. However, with the free tuk-tuk service, you can move from one place to the other with no hassle (in fact, it was great that the hotel was not in the centre of the city, as it is much more relaxing to be in the outside of the city!).
The rooms are spacious and well appointed, with moskito nets on the beds (although there is air conditioning and fans on the roof). The pool, after having been all day long in the temples, is just the best (the water was at perfect temperature!).
Breakfast is simple, but good. And the very best is the attention of the personnel of the hotel (they are just the best!! so extremely friendly! it was a pleasure returning to the hotel and beeing greeted by all the staff with a big smile!!).
I recommend the Pavillon with no doubt!!!

We spent three nights at this hotel in March; selected it based on Trip Advisor ratings and were not disappointed at all.
The first "oddity" if I may call it that and that too in a positive sense, is that the hotel does not ask for a deposit or even a credit card number to secure your reservation. all they ask for is a confirmation or cancellation at least 7 days in advance. Having travelled all over the world, it was the first time I came across such a practice. Shows they trust their guests to do the right thing.
When we checked in, Sebastien, the Manager came and sat with us to brief us about the hotel and the local attractions. he noticed the plaster on my wife's foot and immediately offered to change our room from a first floor one to the ground floor. He was observant and he cared. It was very touching and we really appreciated him for that.
I had written to him in advance that my wife is a pure vegetarian, he had a list of vegetarian eating places in town printed out for us. He also had the map of Siem Reap and suggestions on how we could maximise our time there. In short, he was absolutely prepared for our arrival and had taken the pains to look into all we may need to know before we got there.
The room is okay, nothing too fancy, perhaps the storage space for clothes is a little tight, but we were there for just 3 nights, so we managed okay.
The swimming pool is open 24 hours and that was a big boon for my wife, she recuperates in the pool; moreover, it was just behind our room, so it was a big plus for us.
The break fast buffet is pretty standard, the interesting aspect here is that breakfast is available throughout the day and up to 10 p.m., meaning if someone has gone off early morning to see the sights, he can always come back later and have breakfast, no pressure of time here. A thoughtful touch. Since my wife is a vegetarian, Sebastien allowed her to order one dish from the meals menu for breakfast, once again, reflecting a very accommodating attitude.
There are 2 computers with free internet access just behind the reception, and that is a plus, as we were not carrying our laptops on this trip.
The package comes with a free tuk tuk for the day, we upgraded to a car at an additional charge of $10, and that proved very handy as it was quite warm.
One suggestion: we were not too happy with the guide and used him for only one day; it was difficult to understand his English; maybe the hotel can screen the guides they offer to visitors.

Our stay was nothing short of extraordinary! We stayed at the hotel in mid-February and from the moment we checked in until the moment we checked out our stay was exceptional. The staff was incredibly accommodating, knowledgeable and sincere in all of their efforts. We found it to be the perfect balance of attentiveness without being overbearing. While the entire team was fantastic, Pun at the front-desk was especially impressive. He is exactly what a traveler could hope for when arriving at a high end hotel. He greeted us with a gentle smile and welcomed us to what would be our best hotel experience on our trip. His description of the hotel, the neighboring sites and the city was perfect and we immediately felt at home. In addition, he accommodated a special request and arranged for a surprise cake from Blue Pumpkin to arrive at our door . Pun and another person from the front desk arrived with the cake adorned with candles and sang happy birthday.

Breakfast was extremely enjoyable with a good variety, peaceful morning atmosphere and again the staff proved to be excellent.

In addition to the high praise for the staff, the accommodations were equally impressive. Our room was beautiful, lovely wood floors, beautiful balcony and excellent bathroom. The perfect mix of old world and modern accommodations. The grounds were perfectly kept and the pool was an exceptional respite after a long day of sightseeing.

Finally and in many ways most importantly, our experience with Pavillon would not have been the same if it were not for our tuk tuk driver, Sokhom, who was our driver from Pavillon for the 3 days we were in Siem Reap. We looked forward to every ride. He was unbelievably knowledgeable about the area, took us to great spots to eat, knew exactly where to go for sightseeing and ensured that we were safe, happy and had everything we needed. He always went the extra mile, whether it was picking us up late at night, having cold drinks ready, suggesting a great place to shop, or meeting us before sunrise.

This hotel is a wonderful experience and is sure to be a highlight of your time in Siem Reap - we highly recommend it!!!
