I got picked up by Khom at the airport, who ended up being my excellent driver to the temples the following day.
At first, you wouldn't think much of the GB as it is hidden in a small alley surrounded by local shops. The first thing that strikes you is the laid-back and relaxed atmosphere, almost idyllic, with cushy sofas, a pool and swings at the far end. There are some really interesting details in the decor which makes you curious to find out more. The rooms are quite comfy without too much fuss. The balcony is good for lounging and my favourite is the rain shower which is just gorgeous after a tiring day out. I especially like the urns which they fill your bath and shower gels in.
Breakfast was also good. You have 3 choices but they were kind enough to give me 2 options at once. You have not tried coffee until you have had Cambodian coffee.
The resort also has a friendly pet dog called Blackie. While friendly, he likes to bark at about 4 in the morning. If you can sleep through that, good. If not, you can ask the staff to keep him at the back during your stay there.
Of course, free WIFI is always a plus, especially for a solo traveler like me.
As other reviewers had mentioned, the walk back at night could be a little intimidating as the path is not well lit. However, the locals generally leave you alone. I never once felt unsafe walking in the dark. And yes, it is really quite convenient to walk to Pub Street once you get your bearings right (despite it not really looking that close by on the maps I got).
If I could make 1 suggestion, it would be to have a kettle and cups in the room so that we could make hot drinks. But I suppose they figured you can always call room service.
For me, what made the stay truly unforgettable is the staff at the resort. They were really friendly, professional and accommodating all the time. When I checked in, Kinall was kind enough to brief me on the facilities in the resort, and recommended some sights and things to do during my stay in Siem Reap. When I checked out, I left my credit card behind absentmindedly. The manager Sovanna emailed me and rushed to the airport to return my card before my flight departed. It really does go to show the high level of service in this establishment. I cannot wait to return to stay at the Golden Banana again.
