“My Golden Banana stay”
Reviewed 23 April 2014

I booked myself in for 2 nights in April and arrived with a friend who had booked into the b&b next door. By comparison, she paid about 35SGD through another online outfit and I paid 78USD per night direct. My place had 2 floors and was luxurious by comparison. She knew that a bed and shower was necessary, not much else. I loved my room which led straight out by a cool, tranquil swimming pool, with bougainvillaea draped over balconies and banana leaves keeping the area cool.
Staff were more than nice, they were extremely helpful and keen to make sure I was comfortable - I am a divorced woman in my forties.
Staff organised a tuk-tuk the first day for 5am, We negotiated a rate and settled on $17US for the day. Everyone was helpful, kind, smiling and we were satisfied.
The following morning I arranged to have a motorcycle take me around on the back. I paid $11US and really enjoyed the relative freedom of being on the back of a bike going around Angkor Wat.
The breakfast was excellent and part of the deal (I chose the Cambodian noodles). The coffee was less good, but hey ho there was excellent coffee in any of the many coffee bars around Siem Reap.
Really recommend the Golden Banana. I could have gone cheaper and there are plenty of options to do so, however, this place came recommended and I would recommend it to others. I hope this is useful.

Room Tip: Ask for a poolside room and don't forget your swimming costume as I did ;(

I usually don't write reviews for hotels but after staying here I felt a need. Hotel did not disappoint. The staff was amazing. They went out of their way to make sure we were taken care of. The food and drinks were excellent and the accommodations and location were ideal! Would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Siem Reap.

Stayed here after a recommendation from a friend. It did not disappoint. The staff were lovely and very helpful. The breakfast was to die for (both Khmer and Western choices). The bed was the most comfy thing ever, and the location was excellent. A one minute walk to the old art market, and maybe a 5 min walk to pub street. The neighbourhood felt safe and friendly, and the pool was plenty big enough. We stayed in a two storey villa and I can't recommend it enough. The cocktails, served pool-side, were delicious. The wifi had a good connection, even in the room. I'm trying to think of at least one negative point, but can't. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We stayed in the 'Ylang Room' which I though was the most private and quiet out of all the r...

Golden Banana is a gay friendly resort that welcomes everyone. When we stayed, I'd guess about 50% of guests were gay and 50% families. We all got the same high level of service.

The owner, Dirk, is European and understands the needs and expectations of Western guests whilst providing a Cambodian feel. The staff are Cambodian, very enthusiastic and helpful and give the impression that working at the hotel is as much a pleasure for them as for the guests. It feels like a family. When problems arise (this is Cambodia), the staff work hard to resolve them effectively and pleasantly. When I say they work hard, they really go the extra mile.

The rooms are comfortable, with soft beds, chic furniture and distinctive artwork (the paintings all look like pictures of one or more Tony Abbotts), but the shower areas, blinds, outdoor baths and shutters all feel Cambodian. The setting, with flowering trees and villas built around a swimming pool is idyllic. There are loungers around the pool and when we were there, guests were willing to share them, using them only when needed and not reserving them all day.

The kitchen serves a small range of excellent meals including some Khmer dishes and a range of Western fare. The bar has a good, friendly atmosphere and a good range of cocktails. Breakfast is relaxed and can be taken any time before noon, giving guests a great deal of flexibility.

The front desk can arrange tours, taxis, tuktuks, etc. at verity reasonable prices. They are willing to provide advice on where to go (and the city centre is easily walkable) without making it feel as though they are sending you to places on commission. Just good, honest advice.

What makes the Golden Banana work is just the relaxed atmosphere. Nobody is servile or deferential, nobody hassles you or hurries you. It's just a great vibe. This may well be my favourite hotel.

Room Tip: The stairs are steep - if that's a problem then ask for a ground floor room - otherwise, the top...

Stayed here for 3 nights and really enjoyed it. Staff were friendly and very helpful at arranging everything I needed, from airport pick up to tuk tuks to guides. I was traveling solo on this trip, and was staying in some big luxury hotels as well as some smaller hotels. Golden Banana, by far, was the easiest place to connect with other travelers, and the small bar here was really friendly with an interesting mix of guests.
I booked one of the two story rooms, with outdoor patio/deck with tub up a very steep flight of stairs. If I came back, I'd probably book one of the single floor rooms with a balcony. That being said, the room was fine, the bed comfortable, and the wifi good.
The restaurant is simple, but fine for a quick lunch or dinner after a day of temple schlepping when you just want to kick back and not head out again. But it's an easy walk to the center around Pub Street for more options.
I'd definitely recommend the Golden Banana to anyone planning a trip to Siem Reap.

I just returned from a one week stay at the GB and had
a great stay. It can be very hot seeing the temples and it was great to come back afterwards to relax by the pool or at the bar. The bar was also a great place to meet and talk to other guests and the staff. The staff were the best part of the place, they were always great to talk with, super friendly and very helpful in organizing tours, tuk tuks, or giving advice on places to go around town. It was a great experience and I hope to make it back again!

Perfect location down a quiet lane just across the river from the Old Market. Wonderful, cozy layout around a refreshing pool, sunny the entire day and fringed with tropical flowering landscaping. Unique unpretentious rooms with good A/C and WiFi. Loved the outdoor shower and tub. Friendly staff. Restaurant and bar are OK, more as a convenience than a culinary experience.

Room Tip: Note that the staircases both outside and inside (for two story rooms) are very steep.
