“Beautiful poolside villas outside noise/congestion of Siem Reap”
Reviewed 9 February 2011

I have been to Siem Reap before (10 years ago)
It is now a noisy/congested town now with many hotels and tour buses.
15 minutes outside town (part of the way is a bumpy dirt road) is an oasis of quiet luxury
at a very reasonable price.
11 villas around a delightful pool with great service.
Erwan the manager (from Paris whose English almost has no accent) will greet
you like family. He will explain how the hotel helps the surrounding village and employs
many of them. He will ask how you would like to be addressed and all the staff will know your name. Breakfast and dinner were excellent. We had just gotten off a 5 star cruise ship and the food compared to what we had on board. They made a picnic lunch with a cooler and we got away from the crowds at ruins and had great lunches by small out of the way ruins. As a photographer I got up before dawn and walked the surrounding village for some amazing shots. We stayed 4 nights (which is what I believe is needed to see the ruins including Beng Mealea and Tonle Sap Lake) and the last morning I used one of their bikes around the now familiar village dirt back roads.
After a day of climbing up and down ruins we looked forward to relaxing in our beautiful villa
at Sojourn.

From the moment we arrived in Siem Reap, the Sojourn was responsible for making our holiday stress free. Our airport transfer was polite and friendly. Upon arriving we were made to feel welcome by the staff, whose courtesy extended throughout our entire break. The villas, set around a beautiful pool in tropical gardens were spotless and large with comfortable beds and ensuite which housed a separate shower and a bath you could easily fit 4 people in! (not that we tried).
Dining at the Sojourn provided a menu of Asian and Western choices, all tasting excellent and reasonably priced. Breakfast was cooked to order - a much nicer option than usual buffet in other hotels.
The complex is approx 7km from Siem Reap town. This is not a problem as it is easy to arrange a Tuk Tuk or car into town. The distance gives welcome rest from the noise and pollution of the town.
The ethos of the Sojourn is to assist the local village by providing employment, facilities such as clean drinking water and a recycling scheme, all of which can only be applauded. While you're there I can highly recommend the cookery class they run combined with a visit to a local residents home).
Simply - this place lives up to the reviews on here and more and I cannot fault anything about it.

my wife and I have stayed in many 4 & 5 star hotels around the world but nothing has ever even come close to our stay at sojourn.

Amazing location, amazing facilities, amazing staff

I can't really add much to all the glowing reviews already on this site - all I can say is that if you come to Siem Reap and don't stay at sojourn then you're really missing out.

We've just got back home and are already planning our next trip to sojourn

We were truly pleased to stay at the Sojourn from our pickup at the airport to our drive to Phnom Penh. Everything was well done, well thought out and unique. We are also not the typical tourists who like to be coddled, we also enjoy roaming around on our own.

We did take the Sojourn up on their offer for guided tours of Angkor Wat, and were delighted. We had the same driver from the airport to our last day, and he was super. Had a great sense of humor, was clear and seemed happy to be with us. Not many drivers take the time to also be comfortable with their guests. Our guide was top notch, we liked him so much that we asked for him for an extra day. (I am horrible, and I am so sorry to them for not remembering their names).

Our driver was rather flexible and allowed us the freedom to make minor changes to our itinerary. The biggest was changing our sunrise visit to another day, so that we could go that night to the Water Festival being held in Siam Reap. What a pleasure it was to visit, and experience this most important event.

We also rented bikes from the Sojourn and toured around on our own. We also rode the bikes at night, and they were more than happy to find us flashlights to use. We never felt unsafe or lost, and was a great adventure.

We truly liked the fact that the hotel was away and somewhat remote. It allowed us the luxury of escaping the hustle and bustle of touring the Sites and Siam Reap - a bit of an oasis.

Breakfast and dinner were excellent here, but it would have been great to have a clearer message of what exactly was included in our breakfast. They do provide massages and manicure/pedicures from an outside firm that comes to your room. They were okay, for the price they were excellent :)

One other thing I really liked, there was no tipping, and at the end we left an exceptionally generous tip that was to be given to every staff member. We find this method so fair, as everyone from the pool cleaner, gardener and dishwasher to the front desk staff and room staff made our stay most enjoyable. Thanks, and if we return, you are first choice.

Welcome/Check-In:
Arrived Siem Reap from Phnom Pen via Cambodia Air. Was picked up at the airport by hotel car service. Our driver was very knowledgable and was cordial. Drive took about 20 minutes.

We were greeted promptly and by our names. =) Checking in was easy. Was served a welcome drink. Got our room and settled in.

Room Cleanliness:
The room was gorgeous with tasteful modern decor. Room was super clean. Queen sized bed, AC, fridge, free wi-fi,

Bathroom Cleanliness:
Clean bathroom WITH A SEPARATE SHOWER which is important to us.

Location:
Location was about 6km out from the downtown area. We choose the Weekender package which came with a driver for the time we were there so it made getting in and out of town very easy.

Staff:
The staff at this hotel was super friendly!

Temple Tours:
We were met by our guide and driver early in the morning to start our temple tour. Our guide and driver accommodated our every request and were knowledgable on all the temples. They did an awesome job in explaining and sharing with us valuable information about their country. It truly was an amazing experience.

We stayed 3 nights at Sojourn, and wish we could have stayed much longer! We were in a Temple Villa and the rooms, baths and outdoor showers are fantastic. We were also surprised at how good the restaurant food was, and the range of options provided (we tended to stay with the Khmer options on the menu). We took the opportunity to have their ‘destination dining’ experience, which was in an amazingly beautiful location with a private chef and waitress.
We can highly recommend all of the activities we organised through the hotel – we organised a guide and driver to see the various temples, and attended their cooking class. The hotel is about 10 minutes from Siem Reap by tuk-tuk, but we found it calmer staying outside of town. Airport transfers were no problem (including at 6.15am for our departure) and included in the room rate (and they packed us a breakfast box to take with us, which was much appreciated).
The staff are extremely high quality. The western staff members are very good and personable, but the stars are the locally recruited staff who were always happy and friendly and very skilled at their jobs. Sojourn is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in.

Everything about the Sojourn was first class as everyone else has said.

We’d only booked in for 3 days, but could easily have stayed longer in this lovely retreat only 10 minutes out of town.

Sojourn do wonderful work with the local community, and it was a great to join a “Walk and Talk” around the village, especially knowing that half the cost was donated back into the community and it was obvious to see that the money was being well spent within the village. During our walk we were lucky enough to stumble across the celebration of a young girl, laughing and trying to talk to everyone there as they cooked, laughed or just took it easy, the men in particular know how to relax!

They have their own tuk tuk drivers so there was never a problem bargaining for the best price. During the day it was $3 return into town, with $1 per hour waiting time, and at night it was $4 return, regardless of waiting time.

Erwin the young manager is a credit to the owners. He’s very knowledgeable, and was always on hand to help and advise.
