“Great place, great people, great service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 February 2014

12 friends and I stayed at Seven Candles for a few days and it could not have been a better way to start a week in Cambodia. A friend of mine booked the Siem Reap leg of our trip, so I didn't know anything about the mission of Seven Candles or the PLF until Ponheary herself stopped by the room after we checked in. They're doing great things and we loved to see the children getting tutored on the roof or playing in the lobby when we were coming or leaving.
The staff was unbelievably helpful in advising us on stuff to do, transportation, bike usage and pretty much anything we wanted to do. Whether it was Tuk Tuks to Angkor or the big van to Banlung at 3:00, we were always well taken care of and loved hanging out with the employees. Aong was a great and safe driver to Banlung and even helped us find the best breakfast I've had in Asia, somewhere east of the Mekong.

The facilities of Seven Candles are also great, it's nice and super clean. I don't know if my 50 something year old parents would love it, but it was perfect for 12 20 something college students.

I've stayed at seven candles twice now and it is a good basic guest house. The rooms are a good size with bathrooms, air con and fans. The breakfasts are excellent even though they're not included they are cheap and substantial. The guest house is linked to the Ponheary Ly Foundation supporting 2500 children to go to school. I would definitely stay again.

Seven Candles was incredibly good value, clean, comfortable and full of interest. The cool communal balcony area on each floor (with fresh water, books, dvds and loads of information) was great to just sit in, chat to people and watch the street below. The food was lovely downstairs at breakfast and in the open, airy upstairs room in the evening. The lady cooking was so welcoming and friendly. Our room was rather dark and dingy but very clean and well serviced. The leaflet on where to eat and how to use the loos properly was very useful! Wat Bo Road was handy for good restaurants and not far to walk to the market area. We wish them all the best in their excellent community work.

Room Tip: The new wing seems to have nicer, brighter rooms and better bathrooms

Really great choice in Siem Reap - wonderful owners and staff, big rooms, lots of open terraces, great recommendations for places to see and eat, on site tuk tuks, and marvellous fresh fruits for breakfast. A+++++

I disagree with the reviewers who felt Seven Candles is not conveniently located. We walked to the main sections of the old city in ten minutes or less, and walked back late at night too without concern or issues.
This place has everything you could want. Some of the exceptional highlights:
We reserved in advance and asked them to arrange for private guide and tuk tuk to the Ankgor complex for two days -- we got the best guide anyone could ask for (name is Dahling), while others, who hadn't reserved in advance were displeased with their guides or couldn't get one at all (were there in high season).
Breakfast (a la carte) is very quick and excellently prepared as are the late night "snacks" and light menu items served on the rooftop lounge, where you have the chance to relax and to visit with fellow travelers.
The guesthouse is affiliated with the Ly Foundation, a good cause and we found it interesting to have the chance to speak with its founder. The gift shop is well stocked and benefits those in need.
You really don't need to look further for a place to stay in Siem Reap -- this place has it all, except and elevator, so watch your step on the stairs. You will be given a booklet which explains many important facts and considerations about the area and includes restaurant recommendations compiled by the resident American -- we found some of the recommendations quite good, but some simply awful, so judge for yourself and confirm on Trip Advisor (for example, the BBQ restaurant around the corner which is so highly praised was simply disgusting -- for BBQ go to the area off Pub Street and eat in a nice place)
BTW -- Siem Reap's market and the Seven Candles Guesthouse were great for shopping for silk and other scarves and assorted souvenirs. We did more buying here than in Thailand. Bring small denomination American dollars -- used everywhere.

Seven Candles was a comfortable, clean, and inviting place to stay in Siem Reap! Siem Reap is stuffed with touristy, oversized hotels catering to people who want to experience luxury for a few days without thinking about how it impacts the city and the ancient temples. This is a guest house is a movement against that attitude, with the goal of improving the community, and just as nice any of those luxury resorts. The rooms are simple but beds were soft (not something we found often in Asia) and they gave us more fluffy pillows than most places. The kitchen staff was sweet, making us a quick dinner right after they had packed up for the night. We sort of messed up by not requesting a guide for Angkor Wat before we had arrived so we missed having a guide for our first day (although, our tuk tuk driver was great and got us around to a lot of the sites). Seven Candles got us a guide for the next day and he was wonderful! They also have their fleet of tuk tuks to come and get you (if you know when you will arrive) or take you places, which is a great service to avoid being ripped off by others.

We chose Seven Candles based on reading past TripAdvisor reviews and all the good things they said were true. One of their tuk-tuk drivers picked us up at the Nattakan bus station when we arrived from Bangkok, and Ponheary Ly herself, who started the guesthouse and the foundation to which its profits go, showed us to our room, and we were immediately charmed. The room was clean, comfortable, and quiet, with much appreciated air conditioning even in December. Everything was well thought out and Lori's restaurant recommendation pamphlet and "Cambodian Potty Training 101" were at once hilarious and highly useful. Everyone was friendly and helpful. It is a 5-10 minute walk into the center of town, but it's mostly along the river and pleasant, and being away from Pub Street, it's very quiet at night. Breakfasts were delicious and always included a baguette -- the Cambodian crepe was particularly good. If we ever get back to Siem Reap, I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else.
