Stayed in mid February. My experience was very similar to many others who have reviewed Seven Candles. Clean, friendly, good food, and reasonably priced. Also, unlimited drinking water, and free airport pickup. Distances are short to almost anywhere you want to go in town, but walking is sometime a challenge with the traffic.

My second stay at Seven Candles Guesthouse was just like the first - like coming home and being with family. Kalyan is a beautiful asset at front office / reservations and provides such professional customer service and a smile that makes you feel so welcome each time you walk in or out...Ponheary Ly's gorgeous presence is something you benefit from every day as she goes about her tireless work to education children in Cambodia and provide them with resources to learn effectively and be healthy and happy.
Seven Candles is located perfectly with lovely terraces on each floor that are just perfect for catching a cool breeze, reading a book or watching a stunning sunset....Upstairs is a fantastic rooftop terrace that serves flavoursome home-cooked Khmer dishes as well as very tasty Western classics. The view is amazing and the vibe very chilled...you can even wear pj's up there : )
Like the terrace, the food downstairs at the open air breakfast terraces is beautiful also. Fresh, wholesome and excellent value for money. It was something we looked forward to everyday, (the scrambled eggs being the favourite!)...
The rooms are just lovely and the balconies are a lovely feature...these are rooms you feel like you live in rather than "stay" in. There are noises each of them are part of being in Cambodia...The geckos almost have a conversation with you they are so friendly...
Additionally, the wifi is excellent, the bicycles wonderful and well maintained, the property so very clean, professional touring is always available and the DVD library is a nice option if you want a night in....there are swimming pool options nearby if a cool dip beckons...

When you stay at Seven Candles, you not only stay with family but you contribute to such a significant cause that is helping the future of Cambodia. Thank you Seven Candles family from the bottom of our hearts xxoo

We spent several very pleasant nights at family-owned and operated SCG. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The staff (mostly family) is very helpful and accommodating, and create a real friendly, family atmosphere. It’s an easy walk to nearly everywhere in town. The noise level, for a downtown location, is okay (use earplugs if you’re a light sleeper in the am and the rooster is going to bother you, but the A/C provides white noise that may suffice). Breakfast on the shady patio is simple, cheap and pleasant, and the open air lounge upstairs on the rooftop is comfortable for hanging out and serves drinks and snacks. Showers were hot with good water pressure. And unlimited clean water in the landing can be used to refill your plastic water bottles as needed. The wifi can be a bit slow so don’t plan on doing any downloads - and sometimes it can be a bit unreliable so you may have to log in more than once.

We also did the guesthouse’s food tour while we were there. It was a lot of fun - not because every dish you eat is wonderful (though some were) but for the experience of eating in places you wouldn’t otherwise see (like the fun park on the outskirts of town where the locals hang out in the evening). Our guide and driver, Biset, is also charming and eager to practice his English - it was an opportunity to talk to someone from a rural background who is trying to carve out a role in the tourist economy of Siem Reap.

We also did the off-road bike trip through Seven Candles and recommend it as a way to see some temples with few or no tourists. The scenery, especially atop the walls surrounding Ankor Thom, was lovely and getting away from the tourist buses, cars, and tuk tuks felt liberating. But be aware that you need quick reflexes to navigate the ‘back roads’ (really 'tracks' in some places) and their rocks, branches, gullies and sandy stretches, so we would not recommend this trip for an inexperienced biker.

The restaurant guide provided by Seven Candles from Lori is also terrific - forget using any other guidebook and just go with Lori’s recommendations on the Khmer food, as well as Cuisine Wat Damnak (pricier, but amazing food). And talking with Ponheary and finding out more about their foundation’s work is also a special part of the SCG experience.

Overall, it’s great value for money and we’d happily stay here again.

For a budget traveler, Siem Reap is a traveler's haven, from the unbelievably reasonable if not just rock bottom low per night rates of guesthouses to the souvenir items that can be bought for a $ here and there. So when I came across Seven Candles Guesthouse, owned by the Ly Family, a member of who is Ponheary Ly, a CNN hero awardee whose foundation's goal is to make education available to over 2,500 children, I chose it. Yes, it is more expensive that other guesthouses but it is still at the top of my list because the money I am spending goes to educating children, giving these children a chance in the future. The amenities are simple, rooms and bathrooms are clean with, for me, the best location. Away from the hustle and bustle of the markets yet close enough to walk there any time of the day. Imagine my 80 year-old mother making that walk just about every day! On top of all that, there is WIFI available and yes balconies and a penthouse area where one can enjoy a bottle of cold beer. Because of their exposure to education, all staff members of the guesthouse speak English, including the tuk-tuk drivers, a boon if it is your first time in Siem Reap. Do grab the Food guide that Lori, the "foreigner in residence" has prepared, and yes, try the restaurants and street food mentioned. The food will complete your Siem Reap experience, while staying at Seven Candles makes one compleat knowing one has done a bit of good to his/her fellowmen. Rare is the opportunity to do good, Seven Candles provides that opportunity. And, do bring your "old clothes" to leave behind. It will be truly appreciated.

We had a wonderful experience staying at Seven Candles. Everyone was welcoming and helpful. Breakfast was outstanding. The room was comfortable and spotless. We loved the rooftop space--what a great place to have a beer or a cup of tea and relax after a long hot day. Our guide to Angkor Wat was phenomenal and greatly added to our experience. This is a fabulous hotel for children. And we loved the information provided by the guest house about area restaurants...
