Beautiful rooms and gardens are just a bonus when compared to the wonderful welcome afforded by Peter, Virgil and their kind and attentive staff. This was our first visit to Cambodia, and we placed ourselves firmly in Peter and Virgil's hands. They ensured that we saw the best there was to see, accompanied by excellent guides, and all at remarkably reasonable rates. We ate and drank far too much, encouraged by Virgil's exceptional cooking, and were pleasantly surprised by our bill. Our cottage in the grounds was cute and charming with air conditioning and minibar, as well as a lovely terrace shaded by palms. The delights of Siem Reap's Pub St are just a few minute's walk away and Peter and Virgil will direct you to the best restaurants in town. We will most certainly be returning, we now feel like members of the family!

We are very lucky to choose to stay in cockatoo this February. We spent 6 nights in this hotel which has all nice and clean rooms. Peter and Virgil (the owners) helped us a lot. Not only the accomendation, but also the touring.Peter, a veeeery nice santa-like englishman, spent 4 hours to help us finding a Chinese tour guy, he also helped us arranging Tonle sap lake trip. Virgil, an excellent cook, cooked us very yummy BBQ.
Staying cockatoo, you'll find every dollar you spend is one of the worthest dollar you spend in Siem Reap, even in ur life.

Very warm welcoming by Peter and Virgil.
Precious advises about what and how to visit Angkor.
Great organization.
A little far from the center for people who want to feel the night life.
Mattress to be seriously improved.

* Peter and Virgil (the owners) helped us with planning our stay: it was perfect and we appreciated the personal touch. The tuktuk driver drove us to all the beautiful places, P&V arranged a good guide and shared a lot of interesting background information about Cambodia with us
* Great food (try the gazpacho for lunch)
* Relaxed atmosphere, nice garden with beautiful pool and great loungespots

I stayed at the Cockatoo for 4 nights in January and just like the previous person mentioned, ended up in a room with the worst mattress I ever had. It was so soft, that it went up at the sides, and I'm a small person. My back hurt terribly after one night, and I told Virgil and Peter that I'd have to leave if they did not change the mattress. THEY DID CHANGE THE MATTRESS for me, to a normal and decent foam mattress for the rest of my trip, but the mattress should never have been used on guests in the first place. The bad mattresses should be thrown out. I completely agree with the previous review. My back hurt from the bad mattress for several days---and this was completely unnecessary. The grounds are beautiful and Virgil and Peter are intelligent, articulate, and helpful. But, the rooms are very basic---they are dark and there is nothing luxurious about them. The grounds and common areas though, are very luxurious. The guide that Peter and Virgil chose (the young boy Key and the wonderful driver), were excellent. This was the highlight of the trip and the issues with the hotel, DID NOT RUIN my trip to Angkor, which was spectacular. Because the owners so thoughtfully chose the driver and the guide (which easily might not have happened elsewhere), and because the ruins of Angkor are so spectacular, nothing could have ruined my trip. The owners are two delightful men. They should just take note and make sure the mattresses are decent, so that our backs are protected...and I suspect they will in the future. It is VERY IMPORTANT to note that most "luxury" rooms in Siem Reap, cost a great deal more than this hotel does (easily 4-5 times as much), ..so if you don't want to spend more and they fix the mattress situation, all should be fine...

We thank the writer of this review for the kind remarks she makes about us. However, we feel we have to clarify her observations about the mattress , for which she obviously takes her cue from the previous reviewer.
Long before this reviewer came to Siem Reap (she made her booking with us months in advance), she sent us innumerable emails expressing all sort of concerns. She had very personal requirements down to the choice of her tour guide.
She had booked a cottage but when she got here she did not like the smell of the thatch roof so we moved her to a room in the main house. Next she demanded that we change the mattress, saying she suffered from a bad back and needed to sleep on something harder. None of our guests had ever complained about our beds, so we were not prepared to meet her demand, but we went out and bought her a new mattress.
She then demanded that we supply her with one top sheet and two duvets. We thought this an odd thing to ask in the hot climate of the tropics, but again we did not question her request and provided her with a top sheet and two duvets.
At breakfast she wouldn’t eat fruit or drink orange juice, saying they were too “acidic.” In addition, she asked for brown bread, which is not commonly available in Siem Reap, but again we went out of our way to obtain some for her. She also said she was allergic to dust, but fortunately the abundance of greenery in the resort serves to block out the high level of dust found in Siem Reap.
She then complained about the sounds coming from our surroundings. The hotel is located in secluded cul-de-sace in a quiet residential area. There is no noise from passing traffic and commercial activity. Our neighbors may sometimes make a bit of noise, but then that’s how life is in Cambodia and throughout Asia. During her stay there happened to be some construction work going on nearby and sometimes music and chanting could be heard coming from somewhere. In Cambodia it is a common practice to play music and chanting through loudspeakers during weddings and funerals. There’s nothing we can do to stop it.
One evening, around 7pm, a group of Japanese arrived at the hotel for dinner. There were three adults and eight children, who, naturally enough, were talking animatedly among themselves. They were not loud or rowdy, but the writer of this review stormed out of her room and threatened: “If you let these people in, I’m out of here!” We had no choice but to turn away the Japanese.
One morning, she left us note, demanding a discount . We acceded to her demand.
From that it is obvious that the reviewer was not an easy customer to deal with. Yet we never once showed any unpleasantness toward her. We met her every demand with unwavering patience, and were always courteous, friendly, accommodating and helpful.
She does make one salient point in her review: luxury hotels in Siem Reap charge 4-5 times more than us. To that we would add that we have never claimed to be a luxury hotel. We are a boutique hotel, and even when compared with other boutique hotels, our rates are significantly lower.
To illustrate our point, we recently stayed at a boutique hotel where there was no pool, no garden, no library-lounge, no bar, no restaurant, all of which we offer our guests. The room we were given had no minibar, no desk and chair, no closet, all of which our rooms are furnished with. The bathroom was half the size of our bathrooms and equipped with only a shower (some of our rooms feature a plunge pool, which the previous reviewer derided), and throughout our stay we had trouble with the hot water. There was no Wi-Fi in the room (we offer free Wi-Fi in all our rooms and throughout the resort). Yet the hotel’s room rates were higher than ours!
But we did not complain, nor did we write an unfavorable review on Tripadvisor . We had a pleasant and comfortable stay, and that was enough for us. What is the point of trying to damage the hotel’s reputation? They weren’t nasty to us so why be nasty to them?
This reviewer pretends to offer us some advice on how to better run our hotel, but if she really means well why didn’t she tell us her complaints directly rather than air them in a public forum where such negative comments can damage our reputation?

On arrival we were met at the airport (nb. If arriving at domestic terminal check the international terminal - 2 mins walk away if you can't see a black t-shirt with a cockatoo on it). :) The hotel is in a good location to walk to the town centre whilst being far enough away to be completely quiet in the evening for a good nights sleep. Peter spent a considerable amount of time with us on arrival to plan our two days trip to the temples and took care of organising a guide (ask Peter for Mr Thung Sin) and tuk-tuk. There is absolutely no way we would have been able to see as much as we did without his help and advice. We had a fantastic stay in Siem Reap and thoroughly enjoyed the Cockatoo with the pool and exquisitely designed gardens. We would definitely recommend an evening eating in the restaurant as Virgil's cooking is fantastic - do not miss dessert!
We cannot recommend this hotel highly enough and thank Peter and Virgil for everything they did for us. James and Piotr.
