Sokhalay Angkor Villa Resort
Reviewed 5 March 2013

Although we were happy to the hotel's decor and the customer service, we were thoroughly disappointed with our room. Shortly after arriving to the room, we realized that the shower light was flickering and the standing shower did not work. We informed the front desk right before we had left for dinner. After an enjoyable night, we went for a swim and returned to the room. The shower still did not work. The room appear to be clean but we found a spider crawling in the bath tub. Given that it was our last night in Cambodia, we opened a bottle of wine and wanted to enjoy it at the balcony. To our disappointment, the balcony light did not work and either did the torch in the drawer. The next morning, we saw a dead red snapper floating in the pond. Overall, it was not a villa experience. The quality is expected to decrease considering that they are allowing major Asian companies drop of buses of noisy tourists. Lastly, this hotel is far away from the night market.

Stayed here in late Feb /2013, and found it very quiet and tranquil, even though it was fully booked. Grounds around villas are well landscaped with lots of trees and gardens. Large pool area is a plus and unusually empty at most times as everyone is always out sightseeing. Staff will look after your transportation needs (private car/driver, or Tuk Tuk). Villas rooms are average/adequate, and are 4-plex, 2 upper/2 lower units per individual villa. All authentic Cambodian wooden structures. Main restaurant is very nice, spacious and open, and breakfasts and dinners were all good. Food, drinks and messages were not over priced at all. It is a nice choice for family with children. Major complaint is bed mattresses are 'hard as a rock'; worst I've ever seen! Also, room safe is 'portable'. It is a regular hotel safe but can be moved (and theoretically stuffed in a duffel bag and carried away!). We took our passports and valuables with us when we left for the day, just to be 'safe'. Did not make a lot of sense to me from a security point of view.

Room Tip: Any villa room is your best choice

This is a 5 star hotel, with a huge pool, an air conditioned gym and a beauty spa. The rooms were large and roomy. The breakfast was of a good standard. The bar is good (but pricey). On the opposite corner, there is a little supermarket which sells beer, spirits and other essentials at very cheap prices, so stock up there and put them in your hotel fridge.

Opposite the hotel, literally just across the road, the Green House restaurant was very good for lunch and dinner.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pool.

We stayed at Sokhalay for 4 nights from 10th to 14th feb 2013. Its a lovely hotel with very spacious villas. We had a 1st floor villa overlooking the swimming pool, which is massive. CNY dinners and live music was on 3nights. the place was very festive. Buffet breakfast had a good spread, only drawback were the flies ( I suppose inevitable in a warm country).
The hotel staff were very helpful and organised pick up n drop off. They planned our tour n arranged car n guide. we got helpful tips from them. Guys at the concierge especially Seth were great - spoke good english and ever ready to help. we enjoyed our stay there.
My impressions - people in Cambodia are generally laid back n work slowly. so if u are looking for efficient service then u will be disappointed. everything gets done but at its pace here.
Only US$ are used there so carrying a lot of small dollar notes are useful. Also good to have some local currency for tipping etc. We realised this rather late.

Room Tip: Ask for deluxe villa on 1st floor with a view.

After touring siem reap and the great temples, we decided to stay at Sokhalay for some res, peace and rejuvenation.
I was really impressed by the hotel's service. The staff and crew were really attentive to my needs. They took care of everything from handling my bags and they even clean the room several times a day.
The welcoming drinks was really refreshing and quite extraordinary and I liked it. It was made of tamarind and some other exotic mix. There was a fruit basket waiting for us in the room and the lychees were truly juicy and fresh.
Relaxing by the pool was really good. It was huge and nice.
The rooms were big and had a balcony overlooking the pool. I also liked their chopard toiletries. Really smelled good.
Breakfast buffet was also good with plenty of choices from western to local cuisine.
I definitely recommend this villa for some relaxation, peace and quiet.
I would say that I got a good deal for this hotel as I booked it at agoda at 60% off the usual rate.

The property is old, but not at all run down- this gives a very charming feel. The service was Quite good overall. Pickup from the airport was perfect- driver was waiting a greeted us with cold water and cold refreshing towels upon arrival to the car. The rooms were spacious and nicely appointed, but the sould insulation between the rooms through the adjooining door was insufficient. Pool area is quite lovely, but there is no drink or food service. Pool was nice, as it was spacious, perfect temp, and salt water. Spa was nice- they have "happy hour" specials. I did a 3 1/2 hr service which was nice. Only room for improvement was that they didn't do extractions with the facial. Very easy to get a tuk tuk from the hotel- there was always one waiting. Restaurant with the cafe and bar just off the lobby offered nice lunch-type options. The other more upscale restaurant off the pool area offered a small dining area, but nice ambiance and enjoyable cuisine at a reasonable price.
