really nice grounds, decent service, great pool and close to the temples. we were upgraded which was nice, but the rooms are starting to look old. and to make it worse there were pigeons trapped in the ceiling, so they were moving around and flapping in the "attic". which sounded terrible.

food and drink here is EXPENSIVE, especially the morning breakfast. for that amoung of money i would've expected more.

for the money, i think there are likely better places in siem reap, but i can recommend the hotel with some reservations.

Very beautiful hotel, nice grounds with lakes and ponds. Best to get a room facing the pool or hotel grounds rather than outside. The location is absolutely perfect, very central to everything, yet still peaceful. It's away from the main road by a wide strip of grass, so it's as peaceful as can be. Nice big pool area, and spa nearby. The room was fine, no complaints. TV had lots of international channels including CNN, BBC, HBO etc. Food and service were of very high quality. There is a bar with a pianist at night. The lobby must have some scent pumped in, because it smells great in there, except when people are smoking in there... not sure why they allow smoking in that nice lobby to ruin it. The staff are all very friendly. Reasonably priced wifi in the room, but a little slow.

Near the hotel are a few nice souvenir shops and jewelry stores, including some high end jewelry. There were a few inexpensive restaurants nearby, but you're much better off at the Sofitel where the prices were reasonable for high quality food. A few minutes walk is the Children's Hospital, where you can donate blood for the children, and where on Saturday nights is a free concert and lecture about the hospital which is very worthwhile.

Angkor Wat is about 10 minutes away from the hotel, and is really worth the trip.

Second trip to this hotel - always charming, with a really perfect services. Rooms are all nice, big and newly furnished. Breakfast is a must & the pool really spacious. It is just 10 min from the city centre in tuk tuk so not a big deal. Staff & service are the best I have seen so far !

Excellent hotel and facilities, great restauramts and helpful staff. Nice rooms and the pool looks and is great. Close to Angkor Wat and Siem Reap, short tuk tuk ride, however it is quite overpriced in reality, almost double what we paid for the same standard hotel and room (at a sofitel) in Ho Chi Minh City.

I went over New Year's eve for visiting the temples of Angkor and was pretty late with my booking, so choices were limited at the time and the Sofitel was the only branded property without mandatory New Year's Eve's dinner. Since also recommended other properties were fully booked I chose Sofitel.

Considering it to be a five star and definitely charging like one (230 USD / advance purchase rate: breakfast at 23 USD extra per head), it was a rather disappointing experience, since (barring the service attitude most staff and the close location to the temples) especially the room was surely no five star and not worth the money spent.

Conclusion:
If you take a short break to visit Angkor's temples and don't bother spending the money, you can well stay there, but don't expect too much really.
If you have a bit more time and do not need all amenities (since you're out sightseeing all day and night), I'd not recommend staying there.

Friends who booked earlier stayed at the Australian-run River Village Manor in Siem Reap for USD 24 and the rooms were clean and perfectly all right as well.

Actually, due to the rather poor concierge-knowledge of the Sofitel, the host of the River Village Manor helped us organise our stay there which was great.
