The hotel is restored to its former glory and retains the atmosphere of its past. We stayed in a landmark room which had a balcony overlooking the immaculate gardens at the front of the hotel. The room was large and comfortable. The room was serviced several times a day and the tea and coffee replenished. The room, the furniture and the bathroom recaptured an elegant bygone age. The service within the hotel was excellent and the staff took pride in serving and helping their customers. My wife especially loved the teak and wrought iron lift with its attentive operator. We enjoyed cocktails in the Elephant Bar and food in the Brasserie.
Dinner on the Apsara terrace is not to be missed with beautiful dancers and a varied buffet. The pool is extremely large and with wonderful pool boys who even clean your sunglasses.
We hired a car and guide from the hotel which at first seemed an extravagance but proved to be excellent value. We had the car for 3 days to give us sufficient time to see the main temples and a little of Cambodian life and during this time the car was completely at our disposal. This allowed us to see Angkor Wat at sunrise and return to the hotel during the hotter parts of the day. Returning to the air conditioned car between viewing temples and being welcomed by the uniformed chauffeur with cool towels and ice water was wonderful. We would highly recommend our knowledgeable guide Say (Say.firstname.lastname@example.org) who spoke good English. We spent some time exploring the distant temple of Beng Mealea which is more overgrown and also lake Tonle Sap.
If you want to see the temples in comfort and style this is the way to do it.
