“Not as wonderful as expected”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2010

I have always wanted to stay in a ' Raffles ' hotel since I was little and my parents stayed with us in the Raffles Singapore . All I remember was ' wow '.
So we booked at Siem Reap. Don't get me wrong, the Hotel inside is truly beautiful and the food and service excellent but I was a little disappointed in the bedrooms. noisy air-conditioning and dated rooms without the style that I expected.
It was certainly in a good location though and the biggest pool that seemed a little warm because it wasn't very deep and got heated quite quickly with the heat of the sun.
The staff were only too willing to help with anything. There was an elevator that was straight out of the 1920's, a little wire cage that only held about 4 people. In fact that's what you felt about the place, that you were in a 1920's movie of Agatha Christie.
Not sure about value for money though.

Such a warm and welcoming environment - nothing was too much trouble. Loved the warmth and cheerful attention of most of the staff. Perhaps the wine prices are a bit ovr the top but service overall excellent - especially the laundry service!

To me, it was not a hotel in a commercial sense, but a big and historic royal mansion which perspires dignity and inducive to respect for so much classical beauty and grace, grace from the architecture, grace from the most exquisite furbishing, grace from the personnel and its exquisite matching with the surrounding ancient environment. Such hotels are very rare even in their own class.

The hotel is great, since I am using my own computer, the network is pretty fast and stable. The facilites of the hotel is excellent, I do appreciate the victoria style interior design, equipped with modern facilities. If times allow, I would walk slowly and enjoy the beautiful interior design of this beautiful hotel.

I researched the nine properties rated higher in Siem Reap out of curiosity. One was 130 rooms and another was 107 but the rest can only be described as boutique hotels at 12 to 60 rooms. I would not put them in the same ranking with a full service major facility however great they might be. I found the Raffles. Raffles is super hotel and we have been in at least a 100 luxury hotels around the world. It needs a real elevator because the cage two person contraption looses it's quaintness sometime during the second day. The pool table in the Elephant Bar needs a workover but the atmosphere is terrific. What a staff!!!! Computers are slow but it seems that's Cambodian national problem. No one's going to answer you for twelve hours anyway.

This hotel has a great history and is a classic, but it has also been brought up to date with modern amenities and comforts. The service, helpfulness and friendliness of all of the staff is exceptional. Nice touches are champagne at breakfast, traditional dances in the hotel lobby, a pianist, free internet in the lobby and on every floor (in addiiton to the business office). Fresh towels and bottled water are brought to the room frequently. The laundry service is reasonably priced and fast. The bathtub is huge. Large room with high ceilings. Very good bed. We had booked another hotel, but did not like it and went in search of a better hotel. I was very glad we did, since we were so pleased with the Grand Hotel D'Angkor. We will seek out the Raffles chain next time we travel.

I would recommend the Raffles D'Angkor as a first class experience from the personal touch of being called by name, to the great food, excellent room, attentive service and overall quality of the staff. It made my experience of the Angkor temples that much more special.
