“La Résidence d’Angkor, Siem Reap, Cambodia”
Reviewed 5 February 2012

There are many hotels to choose from in Siem Reap, because the exquisite temple complexes in the vicinity attract many visitors. A number of these hotels are of good quality and a few can be called grand, but we counted ourselves lucky to have settled for the intimate luxury offered by La Résidence. Located in the middle of town, on the river, the hotel is relatively small at 54 rooms. Its design – traditional French colonial, with a lot of dark wood – creates an ‘entre-nous’ feeling that we found very pleasing. Most of the hotel’s rooms enclose the scenic swimming pool. The rooms are very well appointed and, in combination with their dark wood panelling and furnishings, provide an ambience of quiet opulence.
The hotel’s staff is extremely attentive and professional, offering a high standard of friendly and efficient service. We have stayed at many another high-end hotel in the region, but have rarely come across one offering – at a relatively moderate price – quite that distinctive combination of traditional style and modern comfort as La Résidence d’Angkor.

Room Tip: Garden side rooms are more quiet

As you enter the hotel, you cross a wide wooden bridge over a lily pond and immediately I knew this was the place for me! Tranquil, quiet, traditional building offering every modern amenity you can want, the perfect place after a long day at the temples. The only negative was that on the day of our arrival, they had some internet problems and we could not get on line in our room but sat at the pool working on some emails until they sorted out the connection problem in our room. This made us realize just how nice it is to actually sat outside at the pool and it became a favourite place every afternoon. They serve complimentary fresh fruit at the pool in the mornings and we also got some sorbet one afternoon. Cocktails are great. The signature drink at the Martini lounge is obviously Martini's and they have a range of these. Dinner at the BBQ restaurant was excellent and good value for money. Breakfast is available really early in the morning so we could enjoy it before we went to Angkor Wat for sunrise. They also offered to pack our breakfast for us. A lovely property close to the night market and Pub street. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Pool and Gardenside rooms are quiter

I traveled with my wife for a short anniversary trip to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, two very different cities in Cambodia. In Siem Reap we stayed at La Residence d'Angkor where everyone went out of their way to ensure that we were comfortable, that our steaks were prepared just perfect, the wine cold and our room super clean and comfortable.
The hotel has about 60 rooms, mainly built around a gorgeous swimming pool. At night they light torches and big gas flames around the pool, turning it into a fairlyland. As it was a last minute trip, we did not have time to read up about the tours we wanted to do. We were impressed that the staff at the front office arranged everything for us. From a sunrise trip to Angkor Wat, a visit to Ta Phrom (the temple made famous by Angelina Jolie), a visit to the silk farm and a wonderful dinner at Wat Damnak, a restaurant specializing in Khmer food. We liked the fact that we could taste a variety of different dishes at this restaurant, but also enjoyed the food at the BBQ restaurant of the hotel where we could order from a variety of appetizers, main dishes from the grill and desserts, all for a very reasonal fixed price. Next time we go we will stay a bit longer so that we can spend more time at the very modern spa.

Room Tip: Book a Poolside Room or Suite

Having just checked out of La Residence d'Angkor in Siem Reap, I want to share my amazing experience with the world. What a lovely place to stay when exploring the wonders of Angkor and its surroundings.
Walking across the wooden bridge at the entrance 4 days ago, I never expected so much style and care. We stayed in one of the suites, modern, light and bright and at 100 sq met. most probably the biggest hotel room we have ever stayed in. A hand written note from the manager, fresh fruit and flowers welcomed us to our room. The restaurant is top notch. We had dinner in both the BBQ restaurant and the fine dining restaurant. Make sure you book a table near the show on shownight!
Once you pass through the lobby with its high ceilings, you enter an oasis of green - palmtrees, haliconias, spider lilies and bamboo lines the edges of the pool creating a wonderful lush area where you can relax after a day at the temples. At first sight we were disappointed that the lounge area next to the pool is in the shade during the afternoon as we looked forward to soaking up the sun here in Cambodia while it is freezing cold back home, but we soon found out how welcoming the shade is in the warm afternoons.
Do not miss Banteay Srei temple. It is a little further from town but worth the drive to see the intricate stone carvings.
The staff at his hotel offers outstanding service. I believe it starts with management. During my check out I watched the manager comforting a guest who was obviously upset, I saw how much the rest of the team cared for an elderly couple who stayed at the same time as me, I noticed the way they treat every single guest, as if you are the most important person at the hotel.
We will recommend this hotel for it's style, the care they take with their guests, service, food and feel we got really good value for our money. We will be back!

I stayed at La Residence for 2 nights if I can recall properly. The stay was pleasant but the value for money is debatable. The hotel is like an average resort with a very nice pool area. The rooms are decent size with good amenities.

The service was good but nothing extraordinary. However I would recommend the hotel organised tours of Angkor Wat. It might be more expensive but it was well organised with a good English speaking guide.

Would recommend it to others.

We stayed three nights in La Residence and were glad that we had chosen such a peaceful hotel after the heat of Siem Reap and the exhaustion of visiting so many temples. You enter across water into a traditionally styled reception area full of artefacts. Reception was slick with little in the way of formalities - it's all done for you - and a warm welcome from the general manager. Our room overlooked the gardens and swimming pool (we had been advised not to choose a river view as this comes complete with a noisy road between it and the hotel). Our room was huge - more like a suite really with a small sofa, desk and chairs as well as a large balcony. The bathroom was similarly large with an immense stone bath - quite a clamber in to reach the shower. I was a bit thrown by the lack of a wardrobe though appreciated that the hanging area was typically Cambodian style. Breakfast was good with a wide choice from the buffet or you could order a la carte. The bar is large and the service a bit on the slow side and it could do with more in the way of air cooling - the fans were not always fully on. The restaurant (which doubles as the breakfast room) was a bit souless in the evening but the food was great - we had the Angkor Wat tower which included Mekong crab and lobster. We also ate lunch and dinner at the BBQ restaurant - excellent spring rolls and Australian steak. A little bit of luxury much needed after the exertions of Agkor!

Room Tip: If you can book a deluxe garden room on the second floor rather than a river view.

La Residence is the perfect place to stay and explore the temples of Angkor Wat. Beautiful pool, fabulous spa and really comfortable rooms. We liked it so much we extended our stay from 3 to 8 days! The General Manager and all her staff were charming, welcoming and simply great! I loved this hotel and want to come back soon. Louise (London)
