“We just keep coming back...”
Reviewed 8 August 2009

I've stayed here 3 times now, so it's probably time I put in a good word.

This is a little oasis - my girlfriend and I love the place. Cambodia is a wonderful place, we've spent time in both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

My big reasons for coming back:

1. The pool is great - saltwater - so great for my contacts (i wear glasses)
2. The food is really good. Breakfast in your room is the way to go, Set dinner is spot on.
3. The upstairs bar is just a great place to read a book under a fan and drink cocktails.
4. The massive marble bath is amazing - i want my house to be like the hotel rooms.
5. Free WiFi Internet allows you to use laptops or newer iphones and blackberries.
6. The maids / turndown service are very good, they even put in a little candle at night so you dont stumble on the way to the bathroom.

That's all. Its just a great place to spend a week.

Spent ages trying to decide on a place to stay in Siem Reap - we stayed for 5 nights so knew that we'd regret it if we picked a dud. Don't usually pick stay in 4/5 stars - normally prefer a boutique experience but there was a good deal with a local travel agent. Almost picked the Hotel de la Paix - glad we didn't...)

- Great location by the river - just away from the hustle and bustle (unlike the Hotel de la Paix which fronts onto a crossroads, KFC and a big petrol station)
- Short 10 min walk into the centre or there are a couple of tuk tuks outside all the time.
- Lovely big rooms, with interesting signature touches, lacking that 5 star anonymous feel.
- Beautiful massive pool which was nearly always empty
- Friendly, helpful staff - would chat away if you were so inclined
- Lovely bar which sadly was also nearly always empty (2-4-1 happy hour is definitely worth a visit)
- Went to the cultural show in the hotel one night and had dinner - very pricey (and nothing special)
Mossies galore (not surprising really given the leafy grounds and the rainy season) but kept under control by a nightly bug spray and a citronella oil burner. I normally suffer badly but only had the odd one or two - a good escape I thought.

Pub street is buzzing and fun. Great Mexican food in Viva and for Khmer food the Khmer Kitchen and Red Piano do great seafood and the must-try dish Amok.

Oh, and if you have a spare afternoon try the Quad biking - through the surrounding countryside. Very good fun by all accounts (I wimped out)

La Residence d'Angkor has set the bar. Now when we travel we want to stay in a place just like this. I did so much research and was looking for "the right" place for my husband and I to enjoy Ankgor Wat. This was our first big trip without our children since our honeymoon. We booked the package directly from their website which included airport transfers, welcome drink, breakfast and an evening meal. We arrived and the car and driver were waiting with a cold water and cool towel. As we drove past tons of hotels on the airport road I was so pleased with the location of our hotel. Across the river but in walking distance to Central Market/Pub Street. After we checked in we were escorted to our room through the torch lite garden to our second floor room over looking the pool. It was a very large room with a lounge, table, chairs and a huge dividing wall to the soaking tub and bathroom. The bed was covered with rose pedals forming a heart. A plate of fresh fruit and pastires was on the table. What a wonderful start to a most memorial vacation. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I loved walking across teh bridge into the lobby after a long day of touring. The pool was so inviting for a dip after touring. Breakfast was a nice selection of bread, pastries, fruit, cheese, as well as eggs and other hot dishes. We opted to have our dinner on an evening when they have a traditional dance show. We loved the lemongrass smell of the room so much that we purchased our own oil burner. They didn't have our color selection so they let us take the one from the room. I would not stay anywhere else even if I returned with my children.

When we decided to visit Siem Reap, we thought it was important for us to have a good guide to take us through the mysteries and wonders of the Khmer Empire and the monuments: a cosy and nice hotel to come back to after a long day's walk.

The La Residence showed full of promise as soon as we stepped out of the airport. The smiling and friendly driver sent to pick us up offered us a cold towel and cold drinks before setting off on the 20 minute ride to the hotel, located next to the river. Whilst the hotel seems far away from the dust and heat of Siem Reap town, it is only a 15 minute walk or US$1 'tut-tut' ride away from the night market and touristy restaurants.

A lot of wood was used in the construction of the hotel giving it a very nice warm welcoming feel. The hotel also had a lot of ponds, water features tand plants to add to its charm and help guests to relax. The swimming pool was a nice place to soak in after a long day's traipse through the dustry town or the temples.

Staff was very friendly and efficient. Many of the guests have said nice things about the room and the bath on this web site. No need for me to add. The only setback is the less than comfortable and not very practical reclining chair on the balcony of the room.

Breakfast was excellent. Buffet with a good selection of fruits, bread and cold stuff and the option to order your eggs, pancakes or crepe done anyway you want and brought to your table. Eating at the restaurants can be rather expensive. Good alternatives can be found aboud 15-20 min walk away. We thought the La Malraux (French bistro style) offered very good value and character. Very nice tender and succulent beef skewers with pasta for US$7 and oxtail with rice for US$9.

We were very fortunate to chance upon a very good licensed young english speaking guide to educate and help us navigate the mysteries and wonders of the Khmer Empire and the temples. Peng Chansarun (092478074 or chansarun@hotmail.com) was a very enthusiastic and knwoledgeable guide who speaks good english. He ioffered just the right amount of information and highlighted the more significant and important statues, carvings and bas reliefs in the various temples. He answered our questions enthusiastically and his ability to engage us made the whole historical and cultural journey a lot more interesting, maneageable and easier than we dared to expect. On the first day, we walked 8 miles (in spite of having a car) without really noticing it!

All in all, it has been a very pleasant and rewarding 4 night stay at the La Residence.

In 30 years of travel, this is the one hotel that has moved me to tears. This is due in most part to the people who will care for you: their smiles, their generosity, kindness, consideration, anticipation of your needs and their willingness to share their stories, both happy and sad, if you take the time to listen. All this will melt your heart.

The property is in the best location in town, close enough to be a pleasant stroll across the river to the vibrant old quarter of Siem Reap, but far enough removed from the dust and noise. Walking home at night along the river was a pleasure and always felt safe.
The solid wood construction of the building and the beautifully manicured grounds reflect the Cambodian traditions of building and give an authentic feel to the hotel. A hallmark of this property is its impeccable maintainance and cleanliness. The pool and gardens are stylish and inviting and we spent many hours enjoying them and the great pool-side service. At night, the pool-side grounds are lit with dozens of candles and oil burners creating a truly magical atmosphere. We also spent time in the open air, upper verandah lounge looking out over lush vegetation and lawns which are manicured by gardeners with scissors! From here, you can spend happy hour watching the thunderstorms of late afternoon and smelling the tropical air. We had a second floor pool view room. It was huge, more like a suite, with wonderful touches like lemongrass burners, fresh fruit, stone sculptures and silk. It was simply the best hotel room I've ever enjoyed.
Another highlight of La Residence is the food, both Khmer and French, at very reasonable prices. The traditional children's dancing that takes place three times a week in the restaurant during dinner is not to be missed.

We spent 8 nights at this hotel, which is an unusually long stay we were told. But this is a hotel to be savoured as are the temples and many sights of Angkor. It is also worth visiting the outlying temples and seeing the Cambodian countryside, easily reached by tuk-tuk. These explorations into the rural areas and villages were a highlight of our trip to Cambodia.

Without hesitation I'd return again to La Residence d'Angkor. There is simply nothing to criticise about this hotel. But to finish as I began this review, it is the staff that will capture your heart. Take time to listen and they could change you forever.

I booked the hotel for our extremly short visit to Siem Rep based on travel guide book's recommendation . The hotel has a really good location, the staff is friendly and rooms are just incredible. We all agreed that so far that was the best hotel we have stayed in. Excellent service, wonderful and peaceful enviroment, lovely rooms. Wish we could have stayed longer. Definitely a "must stay hotel in Siem Rep".

This is 5 star quality, good value and very charming. The staff make it special every day and the hotel's connection with the local community through their support of a local orphanage makes it much more than your average corporate 5 star joint. We will go back. We loved it. And did I mention the beautiful pool?
