“Oasis of Calm”
Reviewed 16 February 2010

Siem Reap was the first leg of a three stage trip to the far east which also included a cruise round the Andaman coast and a few days in a resort complex in Thailand. Recommended by friends we were not disappointed. We booked directly with the hotel and got an excellent rate which included a full day private tour with guide and picnic lunch, breakfasts, one dinner and airport transfers.

The hotel is centrally situated in Siem Reap and I loved being able to step out and walk down to Pub Street or the Old Market (a lovely 7 minute stroll along the river) and watch the hustle and bustle of the town. The famous sites were a short ride away either by car with a guide or for a bit of self-exploration, by tuk-tuk. (There are plenty available outside the hotel). The hotel is small but beautifully and perfectly formed. The rooms are large and tranquil, all with balconies either overlooking the pool or the river. The bathrooms are also large and well equipped with marvellous corner marble baths (though these are showing some signs of wear now), separated from the bedroom by sliding doors and bamboo screens. There is a new spa (which I didn't vist, but it looked gorgeous). There are many water features in the hotel aside from the lush salt water swimming pool which add to the feeling of calm that pervades the property, and interesting architectural features in the old colonial style using a lot of wood with high vaulted ceilings in the main building. The staff are simply delightful and try to please in every way. We enjoyed the food in the hotel. I cannot comment on the price as the meals taken were included in our package. The breakfast has plentiful choices and can be eaten either indoors in the cool airconditioned dining room, or outside on the verandah overlooking the fish ponds that form a small moat around the main building. Dinner can also be taken here and three times a week the hotel has Aspara shows, featuring local Cambodian musicians and dancers. We celebrated my husband's birthday the night we went which happened to coincide with the Cambodian National Day celebrations. Thus not only did he receive a birthday cake from the hotel kitchen but also witnessed a stunning firework display courtesy of the local authorities! We took picnic hampers on our day of touring the temples and chose the Cambodian option which presented some unusual picnic dishes!

We ate two marvellous meals at local restaurants both just around the corner from the hotel: Bopha and Viroth's, both of which have beautiful gardens (make sure to apply deet based products before sitting outside in the evening), and enjoyed wandering round the night market and Pub Street afterwards (try Dr Fish foot massage for something a little different). One extra tip: If you need any laundry done, don't use the hotel facility. Just around the corner from the hotel (opposite Viroth's) we found an excellent local laundry (in a restaurant!), where we paid the princely sum of $1 for the lot.

Everything about this small gem was exceptional: exquisite food, charming and gracious staff, outstanding service, wonderful rooms/plantings/pool/architecture. Comfortable, classy and tranquil, it provided a refuge from the heat and dust of downtown Siemp Reap. They set us up with a wonderful day-long tour of the temples, including Angkor Wat and some less visited (and much quieter) ruins off the beaten path. The location is also convenient: 15 minutes to the airport and right in the city center. This was my first trip to Cambodia, and I miss my stay here already.

We stayed here 4 nights in January. The is a beautiful hotel with marvelous service. We did not visit any other hotels in the area, but this seemed to have much more character than most (at least from the outside). It is not cheap but if you are looking for stylish luxury in this part of the world, look no further.

We were pleasantly surprised by Siem Reap. There were lots of stylish restaurants close by. The hotel restaurant is very good but the lunch menu is a little limited if you want asian cuisine and outside restaurants are inexpensive (wine often more than doubles the price of the meal).

Viroths and Bopha (both a short stroll from the hotel) were excellent. Butterfly Garden restaurant is fun and excellent food for lunch.

We dragged ourselves jet-lagged out of bed for sunrise at Angkor Wat. Very touristy but worth the effort once! Great time of day to walk around Angkor Wat (Quiet and relatively cool).

Had a shoulder bag grabbed by a motorcyclist in Siem Reap late one night. Could have happened anywhere in the world and the hotel staff said they had never come across it, but watch out. The Police were very good but reporting it was time consuming. They asked if we would like to make a donation to police funds. We did not feel threatened by this and were happy to give a few dollars in what is obviously a very poor country. It didn't spoil our impression of this beautiful area and we enjoyed our time here very much.

We just had a tuk tuk and no guide which was cheap, fun and gave us the freedom to wander around the temples in our own time. There are lots of tuk tuks just outside the hotel and the reception can find you one easily. Might be worth letting them know the evening before if you want to see the sunrise.

This is a beautiful hotel with interior gardens situated in Siem Reap. The rooms are lovely, with all conveniences, and very clean. Service was outstanding, the staff could not be nicer. We had a wonderful New Years' Eve celebration at the restaurant. The grounds are very well kept. We would definitely stay in this hotel again!!

This hotel combines style, good service and comfort. It also is small enough to feel personal. True, prices are high but probably negotiable if you phone up, as I did.

I am on a long business trip and routed through Siem Reap for the weekend, on my journey between Singapore and Bangkok. I usually stay in pretty reasonable establishments and Le Residence is up there with them. Angkor Wat is an incredible place and well worth visiting, as is Cambodia.

For those who like their morning dip, the swimming pool is excellent. It is long, has clear water and beautiful surroundings. Internet may be slow (this is Cambodia, after all....)
but it's free.

On the negative side, the breakfast room is a little characterless.

Only downside here is that you can probably get a perfectly fine hotel in Siem Reap for a lot less.

That said, we loved it. Nice location about a ten minute walk from the restaurants in Siem Reap (that's a good thing). Great food, ambience, pool, etc.

If you're doing a long trip in SE Asia (we did a month), this is a good city for a hotel splurge. The sightseeing is amazing, but it's tiring and the city itself is not great, so you'll spend a bit of time in the hotel. You'll be happy to have somewhere nice to crash.

Angkor Wat is one of the 7 modern wonders of the world and a stay at La Residence is a perfect complement to a visit to Angkor. General Manager Pascal Deyrolle has transformed this Orient Express Hotel into an oasis of refinement for any Angkor traveller. Your are transported back to French colonial Siem Riep but with all the modern refinements of a modern day hotel. You can actually access the Internet without a problem..
La Residence has a stunning swimming pool and lush gardens, a full service spa and a cuisine that features both elegant French dishes as well as a broad variety of local Cambodian food. The warmth of the Cambodian staff is evident the second you arrive.
La Residence is a great experience. Don't miss it
