Angkor Wat was the highlight among all the temples we saw.. The temple is majestic, and I highly recommend to visit this temple in the evening (start at 3pm or so).. This is the only temple in the park that faces west, and hence the lighting is perfect during the evening.. The temple is huge so be prepared to do reasonable amount of walking, and even climbing, but all of it is worth it. A great portion of the temple is open to tourists and this is one temple I will say is a must to see before you die. Catch the sunset at the mountain peak next to the temple for a spectacular view of the temple

Having been this temple 4 times inclusive sunrise and midday visit, no one can fault the sheer scale of this temple in comparison with the other smaller ones in Angkor Wat area. You are counting on your luck if you want to see the beautiful sunrise. The crowd can be unbearable at certain hot spots within the temple compound but the operator has done good job by providing extra facilities such as timber steps to the second level of the tower and barricade for safety near the edge of the wall.

If this is the main temple you like to visit, you should choose a nearby hotel that you can visit to see the best of this temple at different time. Sunrise is a must while a midday visit you can see more details with the help of the sun. Sunset could be interesting too. Check out Tara Angkor Hotel as this hotel is just 10 - 15 minutes away from the temple.

Angkor Wat is impressive and if you're coming to Siem Reap, this is likely at the top of your list.

When you drive up to Angkor Wat (by Tuk Tuk, I hope) the lake/moat and the gate are clearly impressive. Since we were there during low season, there weren't TOO many folks around (I can see it being a complete and total zoo if you go during high season) but there is so much to see, you should expect to spend two hours so you can properly take it all in. We went on our second day of temple touring and I recommend this as well because it would be hard to see the true beauty and scale of the other temples if you see the most impressive one first.

It really is breath-taking...it's completely beautiful and massive and lives up to all the hype! There is so much to see but the No. 1 attraction is the reliefs...we did them last and we were glad we did! Leave the best for last :p

One big tip: To see the very top of Angkor Wat, you will need pants or capris that go past your knees (yes a long skirt is not allowed), and a shirt with sleeves, so come prepared!
