Reviewed 5 March 2014

The Hotel is in a quiet street within a walking distance (2 minutes) from the tourist area of Siem Reap but without the noise and bustle of Pub Street. Good rooms with nothing special. Good bathroom. The breakfast room was a little crowded, I suppose it was the time of departure for the tours. The front desk staff was very kind always avaiable and ready to help. Definitely a good choice.

When I first read some of the reviews for this hotel I was worried. I was picturing the worst. But the Royal Crown Hotel & Spa turned out to be a really great place. Sure it's by the road side but it's not like you'll be sleeping on the road. It's dusty outside but, hey, so is all of Siem Reap in March! So what's the big deal? The salt water swimming pool is no doubt by the main road but it's still great and I had no problems with it.

Service was great and the people there very friendly, helpful and respectful. Some were downright funny. My friend requested an iron to be sent to the room. Of course it's free but my friend wanted to double check so she asked if it was free of charge to use it. The receptionist first said yes but my friend didn't understand him for a couple of times. So the third time the receptionist said "Yes. For US$1,000!" My friend said "What?!" and he laughed his heart out and we laughed too! Funny guy!

There's a tuk-tuk always outside the hotel ready to take you to the middle of town that's just walking distance from the hotel. It's just up the street about a 3 min walk. But if you're legs are about to give way like ours were, a tuk-tuk ride is just US$1.

The room itself is clean and comfortable. We had two single beds, which were not lumpy. The beds were semi-hard and the pillows nice and fluffy, just the way we liked it. Air-conditioning is great.

There's a little kettle to heat up hot water for your complimentary coffee or tea. We had two bottles of mineral water for us every day.

The bathroom took some getting used to. There isn't a door per say. There was a screen door but that's it. So if you're staying there, make sure your friend or roommate understands your privacy policy. Ours was "when I'm in the bathroom, you're to stay in the room!"

There is a rain shower. Pressure for that was just great and the hot water was really good for the aching back and legs we had after our day out at the various temples. There's also a bath tub if you're interested in a soak. Bring your own bath salts for that.

The only thing that put me off the shower area was that the edges of the floor by the wall was moldy. It needed a good scrub. But really unless you're a clean freak, it's something that you can close an eye at. If that really bothers you, take a shower in the bathtub. There's a shower there too.

Our room came with breakfast. And breakfast was really good. There's ham, bacon, hotdogs, cereals, local fruits and ready to order eggs. Plus a whole lot more like noodles and rice etc. There were only two kinds of juices -- passion fruit and orange. Both were great but I loved the passion fruit. Of course they also had the customary tea and coffee.

The hotel has wifi throughout and free usage of their computers downstairs just pass the lobby near the spa. The connection was great although you'll have to log on everytime you come back to the hotel.

Would I come back to this hotel? I sure will. In fact I'd love to spend more time in it. Oh and if you're there, check out the birds they bring out in the mornings. They are the cutest little things and friendly too.

Forget about the negative stuff some of the reviews have written. This place is great and it's inexpensive too. If you're looking for a perfect hotel (is there one?) maybe you'll want to check into one of the more expensive joints. For the rest of us travelers, this is pretty good.

By the way, we were picked up by the hotel in a tuk-tuk driven by Sony. He's a great guy to show you around. We already had a guide but Sony did take us to Pub Street and the surrounding areas and showed us great inexpensive places to eat. Thank Sony!

Room Tip: We had a room with a balcony but it's a small one and facing the road so unless you really want...

The rooms in the old part of the Hotel are a little rund down. The aircon is dripping, the bath room is used up and has poor lights. The beds are really unfortable (hard). Rooms in 5th floor have no elevator Access (you can take elevator only to 4th floor and you have to climb up the stairs).

Room Tip: try not to get a room in the old part/old wing

We stayed here for 3 nights and had a great stay. Rooms were spacious, great big bed, toilet and shower were great. On arrival we were greeted with a tropical juice and an aromatic refreshing towel. The staff were lovely, the location was excellent - 2 minute walk to Pub Street. I would recommend this hotel, we had nil to complain about. Buffet breakfast was quite nice too. A tip- do not get hotels to do your laundry, I guarantee once you walk out the hotel there will be places that do it for $1 per kg. in fact there are about 10 around the hotel.

or better yet read the reviews on tripadvisor first before you book... we booked this hotel because it was recommended by a friend who described it as awesome. Reception was ok but when we got to our room we had to check and recheck the name of the hotel if indeed this was the same hotel our friend described. Although said to be new it doesn't seem so. Toilet and bath needs improvement. Buffet breakfast was so-so. There is a Roofdeck resto had a nice view but food gets to you cold already. However, on the plus side it's very near the old market, pub street and night market area that's just one of its redeeming quality. And oh if you're after a massage or spa service just get one from the numerous ones outside better and cheaper.
