Owner description: Phare, The Cambodian Circus "Amazing vibe & energy, transforming the lives of Cambodian youth" Experience Siem Reap's most unique, authentic top rated (TripAdvisor & Lonely Planet) evening entertainment. More than just a circus, Phare, the Cambodian Circus performers use theater, music, dance and modern circus arts to tell uniquely Cambodian stories; historical, folk and modern. The young circus artists will astonish you with their energy, emotion, enthusiasm and talent. Phare artists are students and graduates from Phare Ponleu Selpak's vocational training centre in Battambang. The association was formed in 1994 by 9 young men coming home from a refugee camp after the Khmer Rouge regime. They were greatly helped during that time by an art teacher using drawing classes as therapy and wanted to share this new skill among the poor, socially deprived and troubled youngsters in Battambang. They founded an art school and public school followed to offer free education. A music school and theatre school were next and finally, for the kids who wanted more, the circus school. Today more than 1,200 pupils attend the public school daily and 500 attend the alternative schools. Phare Ponleu Selpak also has extensive outreach programs, trying to help with the problems highlighted in their own tales. Phare The Cambodian Circus offers these students and graduates somewhere to hone their skills and a place to earn a decent wage. Money that will take them out of poverty and give them self-respect and freedom.

“A fun night out”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

We weren't sure what to expect but had heard good things about this circus. The talented performers are so enthusiastic and energetic, it was easy to follow the storyline and there were some great acrobatic skills. I think there are 3 shows which are rotated regularly. The show goes for around 1 hour. Seats aren't reserved so turn up around 30 mins before the performance if you want good seats. A fun night out and you are helping young people from difficult backgrounds.

Dear PeneG,

Thank you for sharing your experience of Phare, the Cambodian Circus. We're glad to hear you got caught-up in the energy and enthusiasm of the artists.

It's a very good suggestion for open seating ticket holders to arrive early. Phare Boutique and Phare Cafe open at 6:00pm for guests to enjoy some art work and a meal prior to the show. The Big Top opens at 7:10.

For the best seats, there is the pre-reserved preferred seating option in the front 2 rows of the middle section. Preferred seating guests can enter the Big Top any time prior to show time, knowing the best seats are waiting for them. Full details are available on our web site.

Thanks again for writing. I'll share your comments with the artists.

Sincerely,

Craig Dodge

“Cirque du Cambodge!”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

Phare Circus performs every night at their big top in Siem Reap. We went there in March 2014 and we watched their show Sokrias (Eclipse): http://www.pharecambodiancircus.org/circus/our-shows/sokrias-eclipse/

Don't go only because it is a great cause supporting at risk youth with vocational training in Battambang and Siem Reap.

Go because you will have a great time watching amazing circus performers combine Khmer folk tales, with incredible choreography and high-class acrobatics. I watched the Cirque du Soleil show Saltimbanco in Copenhagen in 2009 and I think the Phare Circus artists will give Cirque du Soleil a run for their money :)

The only problem: at 1 hour, the show was too short :)

“A modern circus”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

I was expecting a traditional circus and was nicely surprised by the "Cirque du Soleil" experience.
There were much passion and boundless energy throughout the performance.
I admire the team who transform the lives of these youths who come from difficult backgrounds.

We are always honored and humbled when compared to world-class performance companies. It's truly the energy and passion of the artists, though, that captivate audiences more than anything. They are living testament to the triumph of the human spirit.

“Such unusual fun!”

Second time seeing the circus this year and enjoyed both shows. Great acrobatics with fun story woven around them. Quirky and silly and definitely worth the trip!
